Nice intensive wine finish, in the mouth it seems a bit flat for 15 yo; but can tolerate water well and opens.
    • Nose
      89 89
Pleasant and intensive red fruity wine note combined with dry, mineral notes, in the background the typical cherry port note can also be guessed.
    • Taste
      89 89
Red Berries and Fruits; Port wine quickly takes over; Dry and mineral barrel notes join in. The alcohol is not optimally integrated, but can be easily controlled by adding water. In my opinion, water improves the overall (purely not very complex) impression in the mouth.
    • Finish
      88 88
The aftertaste is medium-long, dry, astringent and vinous, the oak bitterness is more subtle, more consistent with water in a controlled manner.

The Tasteful 8 is an ambitious series from the Brühl whisky house, which was released on the occasion of several tasting events with food pairing.

A 15 year old Tamdhu from the Refill Port Cask with a Rioja finish. This is certainly an unusual combination that brought a beautiful dark amber color with reddish tinges. The whisky was available for just under €100 in the Tasteful 8 range from A Dream of Scotland.

    • Nose
Sure, there is a wine note in the nosing that has a fresh red wine character and unfolds on a woody base. The fruits have a slight sourness, red fruit jelly with currants and strawberries. But there is also a brief flash of marzipan.
    • Taste
In the mouth it is quite smooth even without water, the alcohol is hardly noticeable. At 15 he could be a bit deeper and fatter. The taste of the fruit is rather sweet, strawberry cream is a first association, and there is also a milk chocolate glaze. The wood aromas remain in the background with a light marzipan aroma.
    • Finish
The whisky also remains rather sweet in the aftertaste, the alcohol, which is well integrated, is responsible for the slightly astringent character. With a few drops of water, the chocolaty aromas become a little clearer.

At 15 years old, the whisky is perhaps a bit too thin overall, the aromas are reserved. On the other hand, it's not too full of barrels either. But there is also the feeling that the whisky remains a little too powdered sweet and therefore lacks depth. But it is still delicious as a sweet start to the evening.

I’m sorry to say but this one is rather one-dimensional. It’s not, in any way, off putting or anything. But it’s got not much going for it as well. Very sweet and cask dominated without presenting anything worth remembering :-/

typical Marco Bonn, very sweet, a lot of cask influence, modern whisky where the finishing and not the distillery character dominates. Don't mind as long as the result is as tasty as this one. Appropriate for the Christmas season, but I can't always give it to myself.
As the old Prof. Schobert used to say: There is a bad whisky, only the wrong opportunity.

The darkest of the entire series of the Tasteful 8. I took 3rd place in the tasting today. The Port and Rioja barrel have done a great job here. But the Tamdhu brand can still shine through. Very good!

Here, too, the color makes it immediately clear that the barrel is in charge. Although I'm a Tamdhu fan and can say that the distillery character is still there. This distillate works well with any sherry or, in this case, port/red wine cask. Tart dark plums, blackberries, lots of cocoa and behind them the orange Thamdhu note.
    • Taste
      88 88
Dark chocolate, lots of wine tannins, fat oak, nutmeg, black tea. Here the barrel presses properly. But fits Tamdhu.
    • Finish
      87 87
Quite long, dark chocolate filled with wild berries.

I like wine barrel aging - and I like Tamdhu - I hardly recognize the latter here, the initial aging and the finish are too dominant. This also prevents an even higher rating, although I find the drop to be quite tasty. But the bottom line is a bit too "flat" to give more.
    • Nose
      86 86
Berry, cherry, dusty, typical wine barrel aging. Tasty, but not exactly multi-layered.
    • Taste
      87 87
Initially quite sweet mouthfeel, makes it approachable. Then a hint of spiciness and spice from the European oak barrels, engaging. But not uncomfortable. Typical dusty wine barrel tannins that stimulate saliva and work the malt out of the tongue.
Feels sweeter from sip to sip.
    • Finish
      85 85
No surprises. The cask spiciness goes bit by bit letting the berries and cherries return, the dull mouthfeel dissipating.

  10. LeChiffre scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    • Nose

Sweet; red-fruity; strawberries; clearly red jelly; delicate oak spice; the Portfass influence is clearly recognizable
    • Taste
      86 86
sweet-spicy; tart fruity; Red fruits; there is a sharpness and the malt unfortunately appears a little unround on the palate
    • Finish
      85 85
      peppery-spicy; tart-spicy; delicate fruit; Oak
