    Today I'm trying Glen Scotia. Not had many from this distillery but have enjoyed what I have had the chance to taste. This is from a session from a local festival which featured this bottle plus a Macallan 8 Year old for Campbell, Hope & King - early 1970's for Italy, a 1992 Linkwood and a 1994 Glen Moray. Let's see how it tastes.

    Nose begins with figs and chocolate, then dark cherries, touch of camphor, faint aromas of inner tube, and finally some subtle smoke.

    Palate starts with baking spice, then smoke, chocolate, and cigar ash.

    Finishes with spices, oils, chocolate drizzle, and smoke.

    This Glen Scotia is not really my cup of tea. It needs water to be
    palatable, but that seriously ruins the nose. Undiluted, it is simply too
    bitter. A profile that has to be to your liking. Do not get me wrong, I love heavily sherried whiskies. But if it is over
    the top, it is over the top.
    • Nose

      The sherry influence is truly vast. First fill, no doubt. Coffee beans,
      balsamico, raisins on syrup, dark chocolate, garden hose, some eucalyptus, fake
      leather sofa and a whole bunch of dry red wine. If I give it a few minutes, the
      ghost of wet cardboard, which I also got with the official 12 Year Old, rears
      its ugly head. Diluted it becomes even more sourish. Wine vinegar for gods sake. And the rubber is more prominent too.
    • Taste

      After the initial bomb of alcohol, the red wine again surfaces but is
      overpowered by the garden hose aroma, which is not to my liking. I even get
      some slightly burnt rubber. Very dry and rather bitter. Feisty on spices as
      well. This is deep sherry, bordering on sulphury. You have to like it, I guess.
      With water, I get some oranges and dades, but the oak shouts hard and drowns
      everything else.
    • Finish

      The finish is very long, but oh so bitter on drying, red wine.

    Difficult to assess, although I think it's more consistent than the Glen Scotia 1992 by Malts of Scotland. You could argue it's over-sherried with little distillery character left, but if you're looking for a sherry monster, then it's quite impressive.
    • Nose
      A slightly dirty start (some rubber and organics) but it gets better after some breathing. Typical huge sherry: dried prunes, blackberry pie, walnuts, raisins... Some roasted malt notes and faint smoke in the background. Leather. Hints of mulchy leaves as well.
    • Taste
      Just as sherried. A slightly salty dryness alternates with a herbal sweetness (Ricola bonbons). Dry fruits. Roasted chestnuts and oak. Balsamic syrup. Some nice mocha as well. Plenty of caramel flavours. Reminds me of some 1950-1960's blends in a way.
    • Finish
      Quite long and dry, on spices, bitter chocolate and oak.
