Quite a difference in the nose, taste and finish.
The tasting notes are based on a sample in a shop.
A very interesting dram, unfortunately sold out in the shop I went to.
    • Nose
      90 90
Herbal, damp earthy tones. Some red fruits. Peat is quite shy in the nose. I hardly got any.
    • Taste
      90 90
      Bam, there it is!
Nice warming mouthfeel of peat, fruit and licorice.
    • Finish
      88 88
The taste fades away very slowly into hints of ash. Which is for me the only (small) downside.

I feel the cask influence here is massive. Just massive. It's a style that I may not prefer necessarily, but can appreciate from time to time.
    • Nose
Plenty of diesel, dry oak, tar and charcoal with whispers of grilled beef and smoked paprika powder. It's beastly yet somewhat dense too, if that makes sense. Soft notes of vegetal peat, almond paste and sea spray also. A sliver of ozone and burlap too.
    • Taste
Grilled, barbecue-style beef that's seasoned well with pepper and a pinch of salt. Just a whiff of struck matches, plums, tobacco and a slight medicinal note. Also quite dry. Ashes, charred oak, warming peat.
    • Finish
Long with wood smoke, spices and tobacco. Very dry though.

Beautiful whisky, the combi with the sherrycask works great here, resulting in a lot of roasted meat, bacon. Addictive dram.
    • Nose
      90 90
Great nose, mix of smoke and red fruits, a lot of of roasted meat, bacon. Not too much alcohol punch, spiciness.
    • Taste
      89 89
Nice sparkle, alcohol very well integrated. Red fruits over a woodsmoke base, again a lot of bacon. A nice spicy touch.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still sparkling, bacon again, berries and woodsmoke. Spicy, herbal. Pretty long finish.

Taste is personal. For me, this whisky is exactly what I am looking for. I think it would be quite weird to "rate" a whisky 100/100, but based on personal opinions, I dont think I will ever get this close again. The balance between peat and sweetness is just amazing.
    • Nose
      95 95
Dried red fruits, banana peel, small hint of peat
    • Taste
      97 97
A great balance of peat (usually I prefer more peat, but this works amazing), px sherry flavors.
    • Finish
      97 97
Sweet finish with a little pepper

It's no coincidence that I've been able to taste this one, and although I'm not normally a huge fan of peat or strong sherry ripening myself, this is really a phenomenal dram!
Soft, ripe red fruit and a hint of peat smoke on the nose.
An amazing balance between that fruity and peat, on the palate, with earthy notes, a full soft sweetness that fits just right, notes of violent currants, plum tobacco and something of leather.
And, a lusciously long, warm, soft and very pleasant aftertaste.
The Night Watch is a masterpiece, so is this bottling!
