If you're capable of recalibrating what single malt whisky should taste like, I'm confident you'll find the Starward Ginger Beer Cask #6 interesting at the very least.
    • Nose
There's a definite fresh ginger root influence, as well as spicy oak, resin and some softer notes of acacia honey. It settles into more familiar territory of dark chocolate, raisins and orange peel, but some green and herbal notes remain.
    • Taste
Chewy and rich, there some fun spicy ginger notes with soft touches of fennel and nutmeg, as well as a light floral influence. It's fruity as well with hints of mango and pineapple.
    • Finish
Some cough drops and allspice with powdered sugar. Medium to long.

Actually no whisky, because too ginger-heavy. But it tastes interesting and has no bad marks for my taste, runs "out of competition".

Really delicious with a lot of sweetness, plum fruit and a clear note of ginger with spiciness but has little to do with whisky itself.

    This is a bit different.

From what I can see around the internet, not everybody is a fan and I can see why it is so divisive, but I am all over this.

It's zingy, zesty, syrupy, sweet, sour, spicy and bitter (in that order) and everything about this screams orange and ginger with unhinged roar of some possessed maniac.

The nose does present it more formally, even if it is as a curt manifesto growled out as both a threat and a promise.

Whereas, the palate... The palate is a wooden thunderdome barely containing the two brutish hulks of citrus and ginger-root in glorious, gladiatorial combat.

More nimble fighters of caramel, chocolate and cherry make brave but futile attempts in the arena before being crushed by the two warring behemoths that barely notice them.

The battle rages on and in into the tail where both sides are reinforced: one with a scimitar of sharp, bitter peel and the other with a thousand tiny needles of spice that they use in a final push for victory and an end.

An end that comes as a double KO and sudden quiet.

    It's pretty epic.

    Pricy too.

At Spirits in the Sky – a Belgian whisky festival – my friend Niek pushes a glass under my nose. I smell, frown and ask, ‘Is this whisky?’ Niek laughs and replies: 'That was also my first thought’. Turned out to be the Starward Ginger Beer Cask Finish, something I haven't come across very often (I remember a Teeling that I didn't really like and that's exceptional). I needed to know more about this, so we went back to the booth together to get a closer look at this strange Australian.
On the nose I get oranges and chocolate – orangettes – as well as Fanta Orange and ginger beer. Nicely spicy, but does not remind me remotely of whisky, rather of some liqueur with oranges in the leading role.
It arrives rather sharply and is immediately sweet and sour. Think grapefruit juice with a lot of freshly shaved ginger in the mix. This is particularly outspoken and stimulating, but tasty? Actually, no. Also a bit too spicy, a little too much wood for me.
The finish is mercifully short, while you mainly get orange and ginger.
A nice experience, for sure. But I don't want a whole bottle of this. Add to that the fact that you fork over about 75 EUR for 500ml and the choice to skip this one is quickly made.

Beer foam, loquats, pistachio shell. Later on, dried prune, tobacco and plum peel. Orange chiffon cake after bottle oxidisation. Overall decent sweet fruits without much complexity.

Purple grapes, some canned cherry, sweet orange black tea with honey and some plums.
    • Finish

Dried pineapple, cherry and some haw flakes. Also some sweetened wood and chocolate.

Sampled at Manchester Whisky Club's April Fools Tasting, April 2022. Perhaps unfairly low but for me the ginger beer didn't work at all. Not too bad on the nose but you could tell that there was something strange going on. The ginger dominated the spirit and felt very acidic and bitter on the palette. Normally a fan of Starward but not in this case. It certainly had the room divided. Perhaps it might have been better at a higher ABV to keep the spirit in the contest?

This whisky is just fun. If you approach it with and open mind you'll enjoy it. Give it to your friends who think they know whisky. It's mad.
    • Nose
Lots of ginger but with of oodles of tart lemon meringue pie, candied orange, orange oils and zest, lime juice and cooked pineapple upside down cake.
    • Taste
Creamy vanilla and wood spice, candied orange, Iron bru and a massive explosion of sweet ginger, ginger beer, chocolate and pepper.
    • Finish
      Chocolate and pepper.

    • Nose
Fruity and spicy. Oak, vanilla citrus candied ginger
    • Taste
Sweet, fruity, now there's more ginger. Unusual mix, but interesting.
    • Finish
Oak, becomes slightly bitter. Light fruit again.

Nice and fruity and fresh on the nose. In terms of taste, however, the flavors do not really go together. Unfortunately.

Really nothing for me. On good days I would still wonder if this was whisky. In general VERY pleased with this Starward distillate....

Mild and creamy, pineapple, mango and nuts, ginger clearly again, cane sugar, very subtle flavor with chocolate

really worth a try - a mouth full of spices like on an Arabic bazaar - Not sure if I would buy a bottle but I love the experience that I have just made.

This one is much better than #4 and #5, but it's a bad combination in my humble opinion.
