  1. LeChiffre scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Well done, very typical Talisker. Very maritime and clean. Here you can't go wrong with the price hidden, Talisker in its purest form. However, of course, priced much too high at around 120 euros.
    • Nose
dominant maritime aromas; Seaweed; salt air; mussel shells; Moss; sweet notes of vanilla; delicate fresh citrus notes; fresh wood; well integrated smoke note
      - unmistakably a Talisker for me, very clean, offers everything I expect from a Talisker
    • Taste
oily mouthfeel; a present smoky note; behind it the Talisker-typical sharp sparkling pepperiness; fresh citrus notes; salty-maritime; Seaweed; some vanilla
    • Finish
warming peppery-spicy with the typical Talisker sharpness; salty-maritime; Seaweed; apples; wood spice; smoke (towards ashy)

Compared to other Taliskers, this one is quite dry. In combination with the large peat and saltiness, this gives a nice effect. But I didn't think it was very special, especially for what it costs nowadays.

Good citrusy notes on the palate - quite nice
    • Nose
      87 87
Vanilla, ripe banana, coconut, cookie dough, apple, honey, hay, hay, cereals, whiff of smoke, iodine, little citric
    • Taste
      88 88
Fresh, citrusy, lemony, vanilla, cookie dough, subtle sweetness, iodine, seaweed, seawater, little smoky, pepper, hint of oak wood, black tea, some herbs - not bad

Really coastal and bright, flaunting seashells.
    • Taste

Quite a lot of peat, joined by crystalline fruits - unripe bananas.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Longish and smouldering, black coffee.

You can immediately feel Takisker here, a breath of sea air, salt, earthiness, herbal pepper, a rather volatile, lime or even mint scent, on the one hand, classic, on the other, boredom and always the same, let the taste save it...
    • Taste
      88 88
Very salty, even for Talisker, but quite peaty and smoky, also noticeable pepper, almost everything is confirmed in the aroma, over-salted baked potato, there is also chili with a hint of "fleshy" sweetness.
    • Finish
      87 87
Putting the dot over the "i" after the smell and taste, still salt and pepper, also noticeable smoke and seaness. It stays in the mouth longer.

    Seriously good whisky.
    • Nose
Bonfire smoke, salty sea spray and apple crumble with vanilla pods, but also dried seaweed, whispers of agave and jalapeño brine. Some ashes and cow dung too, but let’s not forget fruits such as pickled lemons and papaya.
    • Taste
Oily mouthfeel but overall quite ashy, salty and somewhat spicy with white pepper taking the lead. A tad more powerful than the nose suggests. More pickled lemons, a touch of coffee powder and sal ammoniac. Water brings out more citrus notes.
    • Finish
A sweeter touch of marshmallows accompanied by grilled pineapple and lingering maritime peat. Long.

    • Nose
Bonfire smoke. Seaweed and kippers. Shells and a lovely sea breeze. Then a hint of coconut. But also a freshly baked apple pie.
    • Taste
An oily mouthfeel. Bonfire smoke again. Then a pinch of sea salt and a hint of tar. Wet rope. Baked apples. Followed by caramel and a hint of honey. And, of course, it’s peppery as well.
    • Finish
Long and peppery. But also notes of sea salt, pepper, and a hint of apples.

Nose: aromatic, sea breeze, pebbles, pear, vaseline, vanilla, some smoked ham with black pepper, anise

Palate: present, sea breeze, pebbles, vanilla, pear, aniseed, ashy, then the chili catch kicks in and takes over

Finish: medium length, warm, ashy, sea breeze, pebbles, pear, vanilla, chilli catch and wood spice

Rating: good thing, for me the most successful Talisker in a long time (also because the bottlings of which are unfortunately only a shadow of themselves these days, I don't even want to start with the prices. I guess that Diageo is to blame...) : maritime, a few fruit aromas, vanilla from the barrels and a chic chili catch. It doesn't deliver an overly complex play of aromas, but it knows how to entertain with its straightforwardness.

    What a wonderful dram.
This really has everything you can expect from a Talisker. The maritime, the peppery, the smoky aftertaste.
Price-quality certainly the best of the special releases this year.

  22. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Iodine quite beefy, but smoother than usual. A nice tide, spray, kelp. Honeyed lemon, like in a toddy, with a dollop of rum. Little by little, it becomes softer, vanilla, cinnamon, tinder. Sweet potatoes. A greyish smoke appears, ashy. With a little water, the Bourbon side stands out even more. White plums, Mirabelle plums, Chasselas grapes, conference pears. Prickly pears, lychees. On the palate, it's thick, spicy, yet smooth and balanced, very classic in fact. Wood, earth, leather, a drop of caramel. Gravel and ash. Nice finish, quite explosive but controlled. Long, syrupy. Banana, papaya, cane sugar, reeds. A fine sandy beach in the sun. Some algae.

    • Nose
Ah, quite maritime as one would expect from a Talisker (made by the sea, right? ???? ), with sea spray, and a beach BBQ bonfire up front, there’s a nice sweet smoky feeling to it, even some candy floss along the smoky embers. As the smoke subsides, I am getting apple Strudle and Tarte Tatin with baked apples and pears. A touch of freshly ground black peppercorns and more salty spray linger.
    • Taste
Starting with more of the sweet baked apples from the Apple Strudle we’ve seen on the nose, then thrown into heaps of wood smoke, then getting briny and salty with the addition of baking spices, hints of tar and dirty insides of fishing boats, macerated dried fruit and bitter cocoa/wood char, licorice and espresso, tiny salty touches along the way.
    • Finish
The wood char and smoke go on for quite a long time, with BBQ’ed apples, sweet and salty toffee, and more wood, ending on a double espresso.

    Young, unbalanced, lacking depth.
Blindly, I would have guessed a young, independently bottled Caol Ila.
At the moment I see no reason to buy another Diageo Special Release.

The nose still gives hope for a complex malt, as the alcohol seems well integrated.

There are not many bottles where my scoring is a few points away from the average on Whiskybase, but this bottle is one such example. It’s superb! I find it far better than the 10, which I quite like. Also better than the 15 and the 18. In comparison to these other three this whisky is thicker, oilier, with amazing integration of alcohol. Would never guess it’s high strength. Spices, pepper, more than a touch of peat - not light but not heavy on smoke. Lemons, apples, honey and vanilla with a strong finish. Very broad palette of flavours that like the alcohol are very well integrated. Has all the hallmarks of a modern Talisker but overall is better integrated and presented with more refinement. I find despite the high strength this one does well with no water. Adding water works as well to present a slightly different experience but for me in my case I find no more than a few drops should be added.

My favourite Talisker that I’ve sample to date aside from the 2008 25 year old. Really love the bottle art too, despite the fact that all the Diageo bottles are looking similar now with the exact same artistic style.

    My summary this year:
The Talisker convinced me and is my favorite this year.
The Lagavulin is on hold because it always has a few points in the open bottle
catching up. Next up this year is the Cardhu worth mentioning as far as the sweet ones go
likes notes of rum finish. The singleton is ok, but goes very much in the wine direction.
Everyone else disappointed me. Unfortunately I haven't been able to try the Cameronbridge yet

My ranking of the SR 2022:

    Talisker 11-year-old 88
    Cardhu 16-year-old 87
Lagavulin 12-year-old 86 (it gets better! towards 88+)
    Singleton 15-year-old 86

Matured in ex-bourbon and refill barrels.

N: Hallelujah! That's the first thing that shoots through my head when I put this malt on the nose. Bonfire on the beach, seaweed, peat, nutmeg, the skin of potatoes, warm sand, cake and a fish pan.
S: On the tongue it's really a pinball machine of flavors: sweet, salty, smoky with a lot of lemon juice, oyster juice, smoked bacon... nice and greasy mouthfeel. Blessed.
F: The long, satisfying finish offers a lot of woodsmoke in addition to some salt and pepper. And smoked sausage and smoked salmon on the deathbed. What a party!
C: Absolutely amazing Talisker, again. Who will join me in a happy dance?

[October 2022] I have a rather chequered legacy with Diageo's Talisker Special Releases of the last years. All three 8-years old were not to my liking at all with way too designed flavour spikes in an overall still immature profile, but I liked the 15-years a lot. So, what about this year's release which age is exactly in-between...

...and it seems as if the adult releases are pretty good (11-years, 15-years) while the under-aged are rather weak (all three 8-years old). This is again a trademark Talisker profile which is both modern and delicious and without designed fancy spikes or me-too characteristics (like heavy peat). Way too expensive for an 11-years old, but is there anything out there that is not way too expensive these crazy times?
    • Nose
      88 88
The colour is quite dark for an 11-years old at amber, and the nose offers a rather impressive peaty profile for a Talisker with interesting herbal and waxy aromas in a firm wooden structure. There are some minor maritime impressions, but these are much shyer than with older bottlings (Talisker does not mature their spirits on Skye anymore since many years). After some breathing the nose gets more and more closed, maybe because of the high abv? I never had this before, so I added some water, and this opens up the nose again.
    • Taste
      90 90
Hooray! The taste is Talisker again and it is not (too much) designed, hence I like it. The peat is a little stronger as with the older Talisker profile, but this is okay as the malt's flavours are powerful too. Molten barley sugars team up with lots of spices (a trademark Talisker characteristic), some maritime impressions (oysters with a shot of lemon) and firm woods to counter the bitter peat and all together create a balanced profile without flaws. Yes, this is rather modern, and it is a good modern profile and mostly important: this is a Talisker profile!
    • Finish
      90 90
The initial mouthfeel is hot (55.1% take their toll) which turns into a satisfying warmness quickly and it coats my palate nicely. No distracting moments here, and this is much better than with the 8-years old. The finish is long and stays with powerful waxes and delicious peaty flavours a little more on the bitter side, but this is a very tasty bitterness and by no means unpleasant as these tannic and astringent bitter notes from too much wood (I found in the 8-years old, too). Some water releases more interesting aromas in the nose (waxes, hessian, chalk and shy fruits) and turns the taste more approachable but the flavours intermingle now. A further reduction changes the nose again and turns it a little sweeter while the taste gets dangerously quaffable now (but less interesting to explore). I like to explore this dram neat, and after that I add a little water for easy drinking.
