As most Springbank distilled whiskies, the nose is a kaleidoscope of dirty oilyness, metal and then a contradictory sweetness.

More confusing than Springbank 10, lightyears smoother than the edgy (but very ikeable!) Longrow Peated NAS. It need some water, but not more than 1/10, otherwise it loses the bite and bottom needed to stay on the right side of serious.

Danny Trejo on a Harley, dressed in a pink skirt could not make me more confused. Masculine roughness and feminine sweetness. Weird yet charming.
    • Taste

Oh yes, I like. Here all elements are in balance. 1/15 water. The richness, the bite, muscular but elegant, well integrated smoke.
    • Finish
      87 87
Classy but the sweetness dominates. A sweetness of semi-condensed milk and canned fruits in syrup. Or honeydrop with fruit flavours. The light smoke and the porty dark fruits saves it from being over the top.

Delicious! Lots of sweetness, smoked meats, fruitiness - currants, plums, a little fruit compote. Alc. perfectly hidden. very drinkable. I must add, that I tested a sample, that have been expecting me for a long time...

i like this RED port much better than the first and only other port bottling before.

this one is fruity, vibrant and peaty. beautiful for blending and refreshing a Longrow Peated for example.

the bottle needs air to develop, as always with Springbank whisky’s.

great value if you can get it for rrp. highly recommended.

Smell: Red berries and strawberry jam, interwoven smoke, a bit greasy, salty, mineral and earthy, spices in the background.
Taste: Strong, dry and peppery attack, slightly sweet and dried fruits, some mint and other herbs, subtle peat smoke.
Finish: Medium length, quite dry, earthy, spicy and red berries come through.
Conclusion: A very pleasant mixture between fruity port wine and a smoky and mineral distillate.

    S 8
Satisfying creamy sweetness with just a good amount of peat to remind you it’s a Longrow.
    Light legs.

    86-90 - A to-share bottle
    • Nose
      87 87
Creamy and sweet. Red fruits peat. Toffee. Fresh milk. Milk chocolate. Ashy smoke at the back with a whiff of burnt pine wood. More vinous notes slowly come through.

A drop of water, more Longrow now. A pinch of sea salt. Still, a ton of milk candy. Also, a whiff of herbs that often use with meat, say rosemary and thyme.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very creamy and viscous mouthfeel. Sweeter than the nose would expect. Again, red fruits and milk candy. Moderately peated, not very pronounced compared to the sweet fruits. Charred oak spices burning, in a good way. Just a touch of tannin at the back.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long finish. Led by fruity malt and drying, ashy oak, then warm bakery spices lingering.

  16. Petitcham scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

The flavor of red fruit is subtly always present, the flavor of longrow's cucumber or melon, the feeling of being young but not burdensome, nonexcessive smoke

  17. thijs100 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

After the somewhat disappointing Longrew Red 15 Years Pinot Noir, this is a comforting return to form.
    • Nose
A little shy at first, but it improves after a little while. Raspberries, redcurrants and warming, earthy smoke. Also gentle maritime touches, dusty notes and some strawberry jam. Finally touches of burlap, sage and barley husks.
    • Taste
Robust and oily with a combination of fruits like cranberries, redcurrants and sweet apricots, but also brown sugar, dried figs and earthy peat smoke. Hints of hazelnuts, very gentle spices and dry oak.
    • Finish
Long. Sweet, jammy fruits accompanied by bonfire smoke.

caramel, lots of red fruits - raspberries, strawberries, cherries, smoke is bit shy in the nose, minerality, a bacon strip
    • Taste
      92 92
more of the sweetness of red fruits (fruit compote like), finally the smoke is also potent and present, salty, burnt caramel, bit of mint.
Oily, rich, complex and balanced, works well with a tiny bit of water
    • Finish
      89 89
long - sweet smoky and spicy

Not an easy choice as the first and only dram of the night. In this respect, it may be that I come to different conclusions when I try again. Experience has shown that Springbanks and others get better with a little air in the bottle
    • Nose
      89 89
I am surprised by the relatively restrained peat influence for a Longrow bottling. The berry sweetness even overlays it. In the symbiosis, however, also interesting and by no means unpleasant. With a little experience you can also perceive the typical lime and a maritime saltiness that are so typical of Campbeltown. But first you have to "sniff past" the barrel influence. The very high alcohol strength seems well integrated, I only perceive something cooling. Later some more preserved and tropical fruits.
      With water significantly less intensity.
    • Taste
      79 79
Strong acceleration, a little water helps here. Preserved berries, some peat and then an intense oaky spice that increases with every sip and thus goes beyond the limits of acceptable bitterness for many.
    • Finish
      82 82
The front finish is also too dominated by bitter notes for my taste. After that, Peat and subliminal fruits take some control again

I like it. Priced too high.
    • Nose

Restrained smoke, red grapes, some sweetness with vanilla, spicy oak. Diluted port wine.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet, hardly any smoke, some ginger spiciness, red grapes and also spicy oak on the palate. Port wine can be clearly tasted. Earthy and wood.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long aftertaste. Creamy sweet with a spicy finish. Lots of dryness on the cheeks that stays until the very end.

While I was always able to access the Longrow Red unseen and without having tried it beforehand in the past few years, I now have my doubts as to whether this assumption has survived. The predecessor - Longrow 15 Pinot Noir - was a disappointment for me, this one is better, but it does not reach the quality of its predecessors by far, even if the nose is very distinctive and appealing. Four years in fresh tawny port casks - quite a long time compared to seven years of aging in ex-bourbon barrels. Seems a little (too) "zeitgeisty" to me, this Red.
    • Nose
      88 88
Redcurrants, raspberries and strawberries immediately make their way. A clearly perceptible, warm note of peat smoke circles over the fresh fruit. Here and there the fruits want to break out into something sweet, peat smoke, thyme and rosemary stand up to this and keep the nose in balance.
    • Taste
      87 87
Dry, not too powerful attack. Correct: very dry. On the tongue, the berries from the nose are a tad sweeter than there, peat smoke manifests itself here only as a silky cloak, spices are hardly discernible. Everything focused on fruit and dry wood, plus a hint of peppermint and liquorice, grated almonds and hazelnuts. Sizzles a little at the back, as if carbonic acid is dancing on your tongue.
    • Finish
      86 86
Seamless transition from the taste to the finish, the carbonation to the end. Unusual, may not really go with the whisky. Peppermint, dry wood, caramel.

Of the latest releases (springbank PX, longrow 21 and the longrow RED), this is the best by far. A smokey, toffeed luxury dram; think fruity, rich and indulgent. The smoke is well integrated and not overpowering it's all singing from the same sheet. Complex port notes and rich bourbon but the heavier end like fudge and coffee.

Beautiful dram but it while you can!

A passable whisky, but of course not worth the hype. A lot of caramel on the nose, then dried red berries, not so strong "moist" peat smoke, some oak. Much more balanced on the palate and especially in the finish, because less caramel than in the nose.

Edit: On the second try, I also find gauze bandages and drilled rock in the background. I can't find any flaws.
