Whisky Reviews for A Secret Speyside Distillery 1994 MoM

Initially rather closed and subtle nose, with some faint unripe fruits and oak. A drop of water and some gentle hand warming worked wonders though, realising a rich bouquet of fruits (orchard and tropical varieties), alongside vanilla, icing sugar, creamy fudge and well-integrated oak. It’s like a totally different dram! Incredibly similar profile on the palate, with sweet and creamy honey and oak alongside malty toast, hazelnuts and a dusting of icing sugar again. The faintest hint of smoke emerges from somewhere and leads into a vanilla cream finish. Lovely dram that absolutely needs water and time. 80-81 neat, but 87-88 with a drop of water. Great value for money. No idea about the distillery though!

    S 8
Very light legs. Delicate and refreshing, what a summer dram. I personally welcome more non-sherried Speysiders like this, though they're often not as popular. I’m guessing it’s Glen Moray / Glenfiddich / Tomintoul.

[83-85] I'll get a bottle unless my bank account says otherwise.

    N 25
Fresh fruits (Red apples, green banana skin). Vanilla wood. Heather honey. Zingy lemon zest. Subtle baking spices. A whiff of floral essence.

    P 25
Summer fruits. oaky, and mildly oily. A touch sour at first sip but in a good way. Mouth-warming peppery spices. Breakfast cereal. Malty. Filtered honey.

    F 25
Mid finish. Warming spices. Oaky and malty. A touch nutty. Mildly citrusy. A hint of smoke, however more like charred wood smoke than peat smoke.

    MoM tasting notes
    • Nose
Honeyed oak and baking spices mingle with delicate whispers of peat smoke and toasted teacakes.
    • Taste
A touch of floral honeysuckle surfaces between robust, oily malt and grilled almonds. Tangy marmalade creeps at the edges, with a prickle of spice.
    • Finish
Nutty cacao and a reappearance of that delicate peat smoke linger, alongside sweet spices, and a touch of peppery oak.
