typical sherry with candied and macerated fruits, other fruits cooked on peach, very sweet apricot, cooked vanilla, wood and its soaked shavings, very present varnish
    a little pastry spices,
fruity on sour candies, cola, sweet candied fruits, it goes a little in all directions, the pleasure of listening to its sensations
come on, let's concentrate, a little: redcurrant, acidity, lemon, sweet exotic fruits, it's very oily, caramelized, vanilla with its sprig, milk chocolate there, soft, the rustic side delicate on the leather, a slightly dusty and the caramelized woodiness that emerges
    long, subtle, swirling!
candied fruits of peach with mango, fruit juice, fruit paste (on sticky fingers), chocolate and this viscosity that holds for a long time, the wood also with vanilla and fudge, a little grassy on the end.

      Superb patinated nose.
Very beautiful wood, waxed, varnished. Leather.
Rancio, cherry, morello cherry, liquorice, caramel, prune, fig, raisin.
Very light medicinal, camphoric. Very slightly grassy.
    • Taste
      91 91
In the mouth it is powerful and oily and creamy.
      Lots of leather, shoe polish.
An explosion of red fruits. Cherry, currant, strawberry. Always dried fruit. Almonds, nuts, dates.
Dark chocolate. Pepper, noble oak, goji berries.
We perceive some aromas of undergrowth.
      A little listerine, camphor.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long finish on noble oak, milk chocolate, red fruits, dried fruits, liquorice, eucalyptus.

Overall, a great Tomatin, even if the sherry and the wood for my taste a little too dominant and the fruity notes a little overlay. The malt needs a lot of time in the opened bottle and in the glass, whereas water has had no positive effect.

A rather closed nose, hay, new wood, a little wax. A little acidity with grapefruit. Apricot just ripe. Aeration brings roundness and reveals a little coconut oil.

The mouth is surprising! I did not expect this fruit explosion! Grapefruit is now preserved, very present apricot syrup, mango and pressed papaya. The sherry appears as plum and coffee, the finish is slightly tingling. The very end of the mouth is herbaceous.

In conclusion, although I prefer Tomatin 76 bourbon cask where the fruit takes more space, the quality is there. The nose is a little behind but the mouth surprises us with its richness.

Warm, honey-rich luscious bottling. With air a great nose, unfortunately in the mouth a little too much spices and also in the finish too much wood for my taste.
    • Nose
      92 92
Warm fruitiness (sultanas, mango chutney, apple strudel), honey, polished oak and undergrowth. Compact, deep, but at first not very expressive and not very complex.

Needs time in the glass, then opens up nicely and clearly increases. Is becoming increasingly fruity (dried apricots, figs, mango, multi-fruit juice) more honey. Somewhat dusty OBF. Much more expressive and enormously deep. Very beautiful.
Water makes him more fruity, but also less nuanced.
    • Taste
      91 91
Soft, round, warm start. Lots of honey, yellow dried fruits, figs, lush. But it quickly comes with a rich peppery spice freight, which superimposed the warm, lush fruitiness (now also passion fruit) and dominated for my taste a bit too much. Full and tight, could be more comfortable.
With water: becomes a little more fruity and sweeter, but also gets a somewhat peculiar artificial touch and becomes one-dimensional.
    • Finish
      90 90
Dry, warm-fruity, velvety, again full. The aroma continues, clearly spices. Very long, balanced. Warm fruit and oak. Unfortunately, the oak tannins are quite clear behind.
With water: not so much spices, passion fruit; first appears more balanced, but then becomes significantly bitter.

Whiskyfun: Tomatin 1976/2011 (51.3%, The Whisky Agency, refill butt, 309 bottles)
Colour: full gold. Nose: extremely close to its sibling, maybe just a
tad drier and more on vanilla and oak. Also a little more mint and
grass. Let’s not split hair, it’s of similar (very high) quality. With
water: same comments. Maybe a little more oak here, maybe… Well,
certainly, but quality is similar. I love these whiffs of ‘a beehive
that you just opened’ (watch the stings). Mouth (neat): once again, it’s
just marginally different but this time it’s even fruitier, more
candied and maybe a little more citrusy as well. Firm, tight, rich,
lively… Again, wow. With water: wowie! Extravagant, sexy, fruity…
Finish: ditto. Comments: again, high quality. Don’t bother with the
1-point difference, it’s very personal and another taster could have put
it the other way ‘round – and he would have been just as right. How
many of these lightly sherried 1976s do they still have? SGP:651 - 92 points.

Maybe not the most complex, but this Tomatin has some really intense flavours and is very rich. Loved it.
    • Nose
Oranges and apples, with a hint of caramel. A bit dusty, with wood shavings also. Pretty oaky actually. After that more fruit appears. Mango, tangerine. Also creamy vanilla.
    • Taste
Tropical fruit bomb. Wow! Peaches, grapefruit, lime and nectarine. Some spices, ginger and cinnamon. Also marzipan and vanilla.
    • Finish
Spicy and fruity. Long and drying.

    Tomatin 34 yo 1976 (51,3%, The Whisky
Agency ‘Grotesque Crocs’ 2011, refill sherry butt, 309 btl.)

Nose: difficult to spot differences between both versions. Both are wonderfully tropical: mango, tangerine, apricot and banana with silky vanilla and mint. The pink grapefruit notes were a bit stronger in the Daily Dram version, the TWA focuses more on oak (+ polish) and seems to show more spicy / herbal notes and also a soft layer of dried fruits. But you know, as soon as I swirl my glasses and put my nose back in, I’m wondering whether it’s not simply imagination. The similarities are far more striking than the differences anyway. Mouth: impressive fruitiness again (tropical fruits and citrus), backed up with spices (nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon, vanilla) and oak. Again the spices in this TWA version seem a little louder and the DD version has more pronounced grapefruit. A little dryness in the end, which seems bigger here. Finish: medium long, fruity and spicy.

For those who were unable to get the Daily Dram version: here’s an almost identical Tomatin – again not the most complex whisky but otherwise just as excellent and extremely drinkable. Great tropical fruits tied together by oak spices. Should arrive in stores shortly. Around € 150.

    Score: 91/100

    • Nose
malty, sherry, sour, sweet, mango & blueberries, pine sap, some tobacco, turning sweeter over time (93)
    • Taste
briefly sour in the beginning, some tannic acid, then turning sweeter, with some barley sugar, again malty & nice balance with the right amount of sherry cask influence, peaches, mango & blueberries, turning a tad bitter if left to breathe for too long (+90 mins) (92)
    • Finish
more malt & sherry, some coffee, now papaya as well with the mangoes & blueberries, faint beeswax, dunnage (93)

A nose top level, for cons I find the mouth slightly weaker and a little unbalanced. It is not less high level.
    • Nose
First nose quite marked by alcohol and after a few minutes, a very nice basket of fruit: ripe peach, exotic (passion fruit, mango, papaya). There is also coffee that is very present. Some wood and some spices but it remains secondary.
    • Taste
Very surprising. We have    both enormously exotic (in the continuity of the nose) that combines with an extremely woody facet marked by sherry: wood, spices of all kinds including pepper, coffee ... In short, a surprising combo that seems to me to be the limit to be unbalanced. Alcohol a little too present too.
    • Finish
Rather short and hot on this sherry side unfortunately. I would have preferred that the exotic fruits are back.

Blind tasting of a sample from Turfsmurf.
    • Nose
Pureed dark forest fruits such as blueberry and bramble. Then leather, prune, mocha, toffee, cinnamon and pepper. Eventually a little peach.
    • Taste
Blackberry jam, pepper, mocha, toffee, apricot, leather, eucalyptus. A
slight musty twist like brie cheese, but in no way disturbing.
    • Finish
Blackberry, cinnamon, apricot, mocha and pepper.

    C: gold

N: melon, pineapple, banana`s, mandarins, strawberries, plums, pears, honey and sherry.
T: spices like cinnamon, ginger, wood (oak) and lots and lots of fruits.
    F: very long and fruity!
C: a real stunner(for an attractive price, imho).

  25. SilentStill scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

One of the clearer sherry tomatoes, which was bottled at 34 years old at its (supposed) climax. This tomato does not have to shun comparison with the partially towering (Bourbon) Tomatin SC. Not quite in the league, but close to it.
    • Nose
A well-matured Highlander with a refreshing blend of wood and sherry influences. Spicy-fruity. Apricot, plum and lighter grape.
    • Taste
Wonderful, to what extent here the wood penetrates and settles smooth on the palate. More sherry does not have to be and otherwise this tomato is soft and balanced around.
    • Finish
Of solid length and more grateful than sherry wood.

  26. PierreDH scored this whisky 92 points Expert Junior

Superb exoticism and no need to go looking for the end of the mouth. It is he who comes to pick you! No need for a dictionary to understand what exuberance means.
    • Nose
We feel the influence of Sherry. Currant grapes, dried apricots. Fluffy almond / apricot grany (yes, I'm precise). Then comes the exotic cavalry, dried mango in the head. A waxy side, beeswax, beehive, honey. Concludes on a freshness menthol, eucalyptus tip. A very greedy nose!
    • Taste
Powerful and round. The fruite invaded immediately the mouth, a real avalanche that takes everything in its path.
    • Finish
Exoticism has planted its tent in the middle of the mouth and apparently, it is not ready to lift the camp! INTERMINABLE length. Nectar of peach and mango and a touch of freshness brought by herbal notes. Delicate bitterness carved by oak

High recognition value and very very similar to a 21y 1976 Cadenhead AC I tasted several years ago.
    • Nose
Oak, tangerine, black currant, with water: polished oak and honey
    • Taste
ultra-fruity (artifical but tasty), sugared citric fruit-jelly
    • Finish
Campino fruit-drops (the dark red ones), delicate bitterness

  28. Roel did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

This is said to be rather good and considering the price also a good bargain.
