Very intense floral type of peat. Powerful smoke, dry malt. A well balanced typical caol ila.

[February, 2017]  This is a review is of the very first NAS batch of Caol Ila Cask Strength, no batch number stated on either the bottle or packaging (bottle production code is 1127).  I bought it in November 2004 for 41 Euro and it has contrary to the 2002 bottling no age statement any longer.

As one of the very first NAS bottlings ever this is still one of the best NAS whiskies I have tried so far.  A typical fat, full bodied Caol Ila with a wonderful balanced peaty and barley sugary profile, that is an excellent swimmer too (it improves with some water added).

If anyone wants to check out the clean, unmasked Caol Ila profile of the last century go for this release.  I swear you will not be disappointed...

[April, 2017]  Most probably there was an earlier batch with the same abv of 55% as I noticed when screening my old tasting notes.  I had such a dram during a Grant Carmichael
"Islay" tasting at Rolandsbogen in February 2003.  In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 85.  Unfortunately I took no additional notes.  According to Grant Carmichael this was a batch of at least 10 year old Caol Ila.PS:  I just checked my old inventory and found I bought such a bottle on November 2nd, 2002.  It is labeled as "Hidden Malt Cask Strength" with 55% and a very small age statement of 14 years old.  So I will request to add such a release on WB and transfer this note after it is done.

Since this has a stated batch number Batch L4... (which usualyl means 2004, or 1994...), could it be yours is L3 or L2 but with 55% as well ?

  7. Master Quill scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    This can`t be 2004. I already bought this in 2003 @55%
