The only whisky I ever had that was fully matured in ex-red wine casks, so interesting to have had this as reference. I bought it for very little money in France. The red wine cask aging gives it a distinct fresh nose that is difficult for me to put in words. There's pepper, malt, vanilla in the background, maybe a bit of leather and pine but the nose is sublte (low intensity), too little richness for my liking. It's a very dry whisky, I do not really detect fruits, maybe a very gentle apricot. It's astringent in the mouth (tannins from the red wine cask probably), the pallate is a bit hollow. The finish gives malt and plants, bit it is too astringent and there's an alcohol burn.

Far from the best whisky, it is a bit bland, but it doesn't have strong off-putting aroma's that are encountered in similarly priced alternatives which are mostly column still blends, so for the price it is actually very good.
