They tried hard with this one to give us a good example of Pittyvaich, but there were good reasons that they flattened the place in my opnion. The wonderful winey quality of this works hard, but there's always that disharmony from the spirit that stops the potential greatness. All that said there are enough good things about this to ensure that I won't mind drinking it.
Winey and a little stinky with plenty of christmas cake notes alongside a wet cardboard and mushroom vague sense of decay. It's clear that some nice casks were used here but there are notes in the Pittyvaich spirit that just don;t smell very good.
It's the same on the palate. There are some classy sherry notes (I suspect Oloroso), but they sit alongside a musty dankness that just detracts a little from the experience.
Some genuine excitement here with powerful spice and mixed peel overwhelming the off notes. A bit drying but very nice.
