[March, 2014]  Another one of these workhorse distilleries for Diageos blends, so I expect a fat, oily and rounded malt with a sweet and grassy/flowery profile...

Yep, expectations met.  Due to the high abv the nose needs some water, for sure.  But the mouthfeel is very nice even neat, no hot or aggressive notes at all.  Yes, you feel the high alcohol content.  But the malt soothes this with its sweetness and coats all the mouth immediately.  The finish is of medium length and adorable sweet too.  But now it is time for a fair amount of water to check all the aromas profile.  The nose opens up nicely and releases the expected grassy and flowery notes, imbedded in a fine vanilla-honey-wooden structure.  All very balanced, no flaws here.  The palate is rounded as well, with no flavour dominating - exactly as the blenders like it.  Easy to sip, but no "Wow!" effect for those who go for such whiskies (by the way, you will not find any "Wow!" in malts exclusively designated to blending as the blenders do not like spikes in their blending base).

It is a nice, easy-to-drink malt - good to relax after a hard day's work...

I'm sure there is some good Whisky behind that impenetrable wall of alcohol. The profile is not boring but the balance is way off here.
    • Nose
A rather pungent nose with some vanilla cream, a little bit of lemon and lots of barley notes. There is also a hint of mineral/mossy peat. Very much a shy refill nose. The alcoholic pungency never really goes away. Even with water. Interesting profile but unrefined.
    • Taste
Lemony, slightly oily arrival and i could swear that there is some faint peat going on. Especially in mid palate. Quite some alcoholic bite to it and a little bit of wood. Slightly grassy and some vanilla. It's a fairly basic profile. Other than that interesting hint of peat, there is nothing remarkable going on here.
    • Finish
Rather long. Still biting with some vanilla/lemon notes. Unremarkable after taste.

The 749 euro shop link is for one of the Rare Malts 5 x20cl bottle sets including Teaninich, Brora & Glendullan.

What is the point of putting incorrect shop links unless you want to artificially inflate the price of a bottle?????

This goes for around 100-1200 euro at auction at the moment, sometimes a little more sometimes a little less.

The colour, level of vanilla, and the level of fruit suggest refill maturation. That's good, after this number of years it's a perfect combination of the spirit character and maturation. It's a very fruity, almost tropical surprise with a pleasant bitter aftertaste. I like these kind of whiskies!
    • Nose
From the candy shop :). mint candies, strawberry, pineapple, peach, and sweet malt, and indeed some cardamom. After a while, it almost gets tropical like a mojito or a mint julep. The level of vanilla is within boundaries. Finally, I find a hint of walnut skin.
    • Taste
Sweet, hot, pepper, fruit. Well, it needs water... Then: fruity, grassy and malty. Pineapple, peach, some fresh lemon. Barley and barley sugar, icing sugar, and fresh mint. The walnut and vanilla remain on the background. This is very enjoyable.
    • Finish
Crystallized ginger, lemon zest, malt, pineapple and a touch of gentian (with pleasant bitterness).

Spicy and malty aroma, cardamom, banana, mint,

anise, apple jam, ripe melon and hay. Marzipan sweet taste, cinnamon,

camphor, pepper, walnuts, malt, hops and vanilla. Medium long, spicy and

    malty end.
