This Elsburn also confirms my assessment that there is a very solid and drinkable German whisky producer.
Because this Elsburn isn't a revelation either, nor is it a super complex whisky, but it doesn't have to hide behind mediocre Scottish bottlings either.

But I have to say that such whiskys - even if they now get 86 points from me - are not really enjoyable or fuel my passion for the very expensive hobby of whisky.
While they are drinkable and have few really obvious faults, the mediocrity of today's whisky production is simply no longer particularly exciting, motivating or enjoyable - in short: irrelevant.

Barrel driven and again a definite winey sour note but not overdone like the Elsburn Iberica I had in the glass previously (WB212677).
A dry cherry sweetness with woody aromas, well-integrated alcohol and a relatively simple but harmonious aroma profile.
      Espresso, spicy and nutty aromas.
All in all clean and as Dirk would say: a "modern" sherry whisky.
    • Taste
      85 85
The attack is still appropriate for the high speed and the aromas go back in a simple but structured and delineable direction of slightly dry, woody and wine-heavy.
Unfortunately there is not enough character here - probably there is only the choice between less barrel influence (and then more inharmonious German distillate) or more barrel influence (but then only a tasty soup).

I think they made the best of it with Elsburn and the whisky is again a very solid German bottling that doesn't have to hide or lose against Scottish whiskys with comparable key data.

In contrast to the nose, I like the Iberica a bit better here.

Relatively unspectacular and again more in the direction of dry tartaric acid. A mouthfeel that I will not remember for a long time.

    Very fruity dry delicious whisky.
A German whisky that can definitely hold a candle to the Scots.
    • Nose

Very sweet initially, cherry, honey, sultanas, dark berries, woody, leathery
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet, smoke(springbank smoke), musty, sultanas, berries, spicy, burnt wood
    • Finish
      90 90
Dry, long finish, smoke, spicy, tart, leather, sultanas, honey

I am very pleasantly surprised. This is my first German whisky and it made a big impression on me. Sweet, aromatic, fruity. This fruitiness is very specific, because both the aroma and taste are dominated by very ripe fruits. Despite the high alcohol content, it is perfectly hidden.
I did not even dare to add water, fearing to spoil the specific aftertaste that had just been created by the higher alcohol content.
    • Nose
      87 87
lots of sweets, icing for the cake, strong sherry, ripe cherries, freshly roasted coffee, oak with nail polish in the background
    • Taste
      89 89
quite sweet, cherries, currants, slightly spicy, slightly earthy, turning into raisins in chocolate
    • Finish
      88 88
long, sweet, very pleasant, fruity, sherry, mineral with spicy spices, warming end with a taste of ripe cherries.

This is really useful stuff in the nose and mouth, but it is definitely on the sweet-fruity side (raspberry/strawberry/red currant) without being sticky - with (well) a lot of alcohol power. But that was all to be expected.

With a little too much water, it quickly tips in the direction of "watered down" - so be careful!

I would like a 0.5l bottle for 45 EUR. Unfortunately, the price level for this drink is slightly higher. Oh well.

Nevertheless, I reach up into the shelf and pull out an 87.
