This is a really dirt malt! I fully understand these mixed reviews but I had it at a tasting and for me it was an immediate buy afterwards. It's a whisky that needs attention and time but if you're into weird stuff this is for you!

This smells like a heavy machinery garage with a sherry finish. Machine oil, mud, chain fat, liquorice, burnt tires, salt, some balsamic vinegar, curry powder, cocoa powder, leather boots with polish.

With water: a little cleaner, but the balsamic vinegar and the burnt tires take over even more

Extremely fat and dirty. Immediately sweetness of dark berries, maple syrup strawberry bonbons fills the mouth. It gets replaced by burnt toast, burnt rubber afterwards.

With water: the berry sweetness is even more. Dark Berry Marmelade and some sweet pastries, the burnt rubber is a bit less and a very meaty smoke comes through!

A bit bitter. Lots of oak. Very medicinal and intense smoke. Lots of espresso and dark chocolate. Salt and burnt rubber join in.

With water: so many dark berries. Basically it is dark Berry Marmelade, incredibly sweet. Gets then replaced by tire tubes and burnt tires.

Too young and kind of plastic smoke in it.

  4. Boletus did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Admittedly, I was really looking forward to this malt and I have to say that I am quite disappointed. There are exciting and beautiful approaches, but the whisky is too immature and too impure for me overall. The sulfur is certainly not particularly high, but disturbing enough for my taste and the smokiness, which is far less pronounced than the 100ppm would suggest, doesn't pull it out for me either.
    • Nose
Young and dirty, yeasty brewhouse scent mixed with a rarely ventilated cowshed, which also seems to have a few goats, the peat smoke is significantly less strong than expected and adds an inherently quite nice herbal campfire note with cinnamon undertones, only very slight medicinal Hints of iodine and gauze bandages, grilled smoked bacon, but the clumsy and metallic youthful barley clearly dominates the events and combines with the slightly sulphurous Amontillado barrel in a not so great way, an old preserving gum crumbles when you sniff, dust-dry fig wreath, some tobacco and leather abrasion, juiceless Prunes and currants, shriveled hazelnuts
    • Taste
Dried figs are buried under brittle gum, the bittersweet sulfur contamination creates a rather uncomfortable start with tiny pinpricks in tongue and cheeks, then a noticeable raisin and date sweetness walks in and smooths my developed facial lines a little, hearty and not-quite-clean malt with toasty and greasy moments, but here too the youthful aftertaste with yeast and hot copper sheet, a bit of cinnamon and star anise, apple crumble with brown sugar, a little cocoa, prunes wrapped in crispy bacon, some heather, a drop of fir honey, relatively unspectacular and unmedicinal campfire smoke than side effect
    • Finish
Pronounced medium length, a copper scythe polished to a high gloss cuts into the mucous membrane, peppery, then comes a thick lump of block malt and initiates the finale with dark honey, roasted hazelnuts, dates, currants, the peat smoke forms a wafting basis and repeatedly releases a small cloud of cinnamon , cocoa, a hint of vanilla, after the sweetness has dissipated, it ends quite dry with straw and a thin trace of light rolling tobacco and eraser abrasion, the peaty campfire smoke lingers for a long time
