These were beautiful sherry casks, which are overwhelmingly present over the entire length of this whisky. It is nice that the beautiful oranges of the Hazelburn spirit are still present. There is a layer of dark chocolate over it. Excellently balanced. Classic of the future! Even that little hint of sulfur doesn't detract from it.

    triple distilled!
    nose:
intense, buttery caramel, sherry with ripe fruits on grapes, dates, figs; used leather dust, some dry varnish
    stuffy:
on the rancio with soaked dried fruit, noble mould,
cooked and macerated fruits, bitterness and white pepper all of a sudden, it heats up
the toasted wood, some cooked almond kernel, a little harshness, the burnt caramel returns, more viscous, the burnt and syrupy wood, still some dry varnish
    final:
quite long and monolithic, the big sherry which oozes on the sugar, the cream extract, the almond, the toasted caramel and the cooked fruits, and the bitterness which emerges from it.

I expected it to be good, but it is better than I thought it would be.
    • Nose
A clean sherry influence, that's a good start. A tinge of mint combined with leather, chocolate-covered raisins, damp earth and dried fruits. Some figs, blackberries and a sprinkle of cinnamon too. A textbook example of what I'd like my sherry-matured whisky to be.
    • Taste
Pretty spot on again. Somewhat dry yet viscous. There's leather and tobacco with a hint of oak spice, but also mocha, chocolate and nutmeg. Then some hessian, blackberries and a tinge of smoke. Really satisfactory.
    • Finish
Slightly tannic, some furniture polish and lingering oak spices. Long.

    • Nose

Dried fruits, raisins, nuts, acacia honey, sherry wood, chocolate, brown sugar, hints of leather and engine oil, spices, cinnamon, cloves, little earthy - pretty good!
    • Taste
      90 90
Oily, chocolate, good sweetness, spices, pepper, cloves, sherry wood, dried fruits, raisins, nuts, hints of leather, toffee, dates, dark honey - still good!
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium long, warm, woody, spicy, chocolate

Not very complex, but a nice gourmet sherry monster.
    • Nose
Powerful, concentrated nose. On the old caramel, a little burnt but without smoke, the leather (which becomes dusty with aeration). Some tarry notes. Prunes and date syrup.
    • Taste
Really powerful mouth. We are really on the same markers as the nose with this fusion between slightly burnt smokeless caramel and much more present tarry notes. Bitter mixture in the background of walnuts and hazelnuts, and the usual dried fruits.
    • Finish
Long and astringent finish on a nice wood varnish and caramel tar.

Bought a second bottle with a friend and pulled it loose, bottles are flying out of the stores at far too high prices

This oloroso sherry comes from great barrels, I think from European wood
    • Nose
Farm boys, (raisins with rum) chocolate, even more raisins, figs, toffee, dates, blackberries, flambé cherries, oak, freshly sawn wood, pine needles, moss, forest air, cinnamon, nutmeg
    • Taste
Chocolate, toffee, roasted coffee, cinnamon, all in all for 54.2% soft entrance, ginger, licorice
    • Finish
Very long, covering the mouth…speculaas, gingerbread cookies, gingerbread….fantastic barrels at springbank

  18. DannyDram scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Straightforward sherry, good structure, little depth.
    • Nose
      89 89
Classic sherry, dried fruit, dried apricot, leather, citric, metal workshop, dark chocolate, furniture polish. Good intensity, balanced.
    • Taste
      90 90
Oak spice, pepper, ginger, caramel. Sherry. Good start, strong body, vanilla sweetness, good intensity.
    • Finish
      90 90

Very good Oloroso aged whisky. Unfortunately, I find the price called for it in Germany to be too high.

Great, very fruity with well-hidden Hazelburn alcohol. Long after the tasting is over, you can feel the aftertaste of milk chocolate, toffee and ripe grapefruit.
    • Nose
      87 87
fresh, intense, toffee, milk chocolate, werthers original, bitter orange, crumble on a cake
    • Taste

    This Hazelburn is insanely good!
I have slight sulfur notes in my nose.
Exactly my taste! Super fruity tangy and not overloaded on tap at all.

Hazelburn hasn't been in flipper focus, in the past year(s), looks like this is, unfortunately, changing or the German shops and their greed just want to rip off customers (again) due to Springbank relation? I would like to taste the liquid, but charging more than 220 EUR? ...(insert whatever you like)!

Sampled the Springbank Distillery at the 2022 Hazelburn Festival Tasting.

Good mix of dried fruit, tobacco and leather. Creamy mouthfeel, broth, thick sherry, strong cask influence but by no means in a negative sense. Alcohol is well integrated. Astringent and nutty on the finish.
