Bunnahabhain 2012 is a combination of peat smoke and Shirley. I like the greasy taste in the mouth, which makes the whisky full. The sweet dark fruit is also very pleasing. If there is no small amount of bitterness in the later stage, I will like it more!
    • Nose
soft peat, smoke, and then obvious Shirley, raisins with chocolate and nuts. Sweet jam with dark fruits (plum, prune) with a hint of salty sea salt at the end.
    • Taste
sweet in the mouth, dark fruit with oil, then dark chocolate and roasted walnut. Smoke gradually appears with a little coffee smell.
    • Finish
Medium length. Smoke and a small amount of peat. Slightly sweet, black pepper and spices, slightly bitter.

Not a fan of moine. Funky and tangy, like grape juice gone bad.

Colour: That sherry bomb colour. Ha Ha. Dark Mahogany. Deep amber.

Nose: Fantastic nose. Brown sugar. Almost like that spiced candy that they give in spas alongside the beverage. Prunes, Ripened plums, cocoa, butter roasted hazelnut, a burnt smoky note thats phenomenal, some earthy button mushroom note. Some mossy feel followed by a heavy menthol note but rhubarb salt. ????

On the palate, it still reigns supreme. Mouth coating, heavy smokiness tangled with dark fruits & prune sweetness. Very nutty. Some roasted nuts (hazelnut, pecan) but a creamish buttery feel to it alongside the nuttiness. Beautiful. Very layered and bustling flavours. Fennel, cloves, powdered cinnamon. ????

Finish is medium with warm peppery notes. Pickles. ????

A lovely Bunna. Yes, it is a modern sherry bomb. I hate to say I loved this modern sherry bomb. Top class. Very much fun. Very much wild. Very much enjoyable.

    This one’s a clear winner.

The color of this Bunna immediately appeals to the imagination. After all, this young malt got a finish on an oloroso sherry cask. The Whisky Jury only marketed 120 bottles, which meant they were sold through a ballot system and I'm only too happy to be able to get my hands on a bottle. In addition to the name of the distillery, the label also says 'Moine', which means peat swamp in Celtic. So I know what to expect.
Yes! On the nose, that's an instant hit. Dark sweet notes of candy sugar and roasted nuts, plum jam and origin chocolate, complemented by a rough edge of the yeast and wood. And a delicious smokiness of the peat, of course. In the distance a salty note like dried kelp and wet rocks in the surf appears. I'm already sold.
It arrives oily and powerfully seasoned with again dark sweet fruit, but now also something bright like honey. The smokiness grows steadily and makes the mouth completely warm. Walnuts and roasted chestnuts give it a bitter edge. This is very wide in terms of taste. There's a lot going on here.
The finish is smoky and sweet with some cloves and black pepper on the deathbed.
As always sold out faster than you can pronounce the words 'sold out', so I consider myself lucky that I was able to get my hands on a bottle via The Bonding Dram.
