Glenburgie, 14 years old, 1st fill Sherry Butt and by Signatory for Kirsch with 62.2% vol. poured into the Ibisco Decanter. There is no question that this is not a simple drinking whisky, neither in terms of price nor performance. This is a whisky that attracts attention in the forums, of which pictures appear from time to time - but which is then available in the shops for quite a long time. In July 2022 it will still be available in many shops for between €115 and €140. Maybe it's one of those whiskys that are made for showing rather than drinking.

    • Nose
In the nosing he emphasizes that he cannot be a simple whisky. Even the alcohol presses massively into the nose and leads to an inharmonious first impression. The whisky definitely needs water. It gets better with water, now the sherry flavors are warmer and rounder, a little less bitter. It comes Franzbrötchen, cinnamon and plum jam, a few raisins, rock candy and ovaltine.
    • Taste
In terms of taste, it becomes even more difficult. The alcohol is very pungent and bitter-bitting, even with water. There is little sweetness and fruit, the whisky develops a strong dryness, becomes astringently tart. The flavors are quite massive. This whisky was probably also filled into the casks with too high an alcohol content. This brings a rich color, but also releases bitter wood aromas that stand in the way of harmonious aging.
    • Finish
It feels like the alcohol releases the aromas from the palate again and instead of nice sherry, what remains is a bit of bitter wood extract.

Somehow this whisky is not finished yet, although it is quite old at 14 years old. However, he is very rowdy, which is mainly due to the alcohol, which is difficult to control. At least I haven't managed to find the sweet spot with the sample yet. The aromas lack sophistication, everything is a bit coarse. Didn't convince me.

Rich, good complexity, quite different but too powerful - quite some water needed
    • Nose
      89 89
Dried fruits, plums, dates, raisins, toffee, molasses, coffee, orange zest, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, some nutmeg, cinnamon, sherry wood, hints of charred oak too, spices, little herbs - really not bad
    • Taste
      88 88
Very punchy, oily, liquorice, subtle sweetness, hints of acacia honey, charred oak, burned matches, ashes, soot, dark chocolate, coffee, dried dates, spices, herbs, hints of leather
    • Finish
      87 87
Long, burning, plenty of liquorice, spices, oaky, herbaceous, a tad bitter

Unusual, complex, but unfortunately clearly undermatured. Why are such exceptional casks filled so early? Such a pity. Stings and bites like a pig...

There's even a bit of smoke on the finish.

Edit: If the whisky didn't sting and bite so much, the rating would have been significantly higher. A very unusual barrel.
