Great, aromatic and versatile malt. Not necessarily high complexity, but quite tasty and sweet to drink. These old Cooleys can do something in my eyes.

A malty, slightly artificial sweetness comes straight to the nose. Always swinging back and forth between honey-sweet and bubblegum-sweet. In addition, fruity, overripe bananas, pears and pineapples come into their own.
With a little good will you can still find coconut.
Vanilla and some caramel are also very present. Some sour bread dough and fresh hay emerge from the background. With more time in the glass, all this is beautifully accompanied by wood aromas and some refreshing mint. Great round nose. Exactly my thing.

On the palate, this malt is even more versatile. The fruit notes of pears, banana and pineapple are complemented by more exotic fruits. Peaches, apricots and mangoes are included. Wonderfully fruity-sweet. Even the artificial sweetness that was there in the nose from time to time is gone here. Vanilla sugar and honey provide a great sweet component. Generally more of a soft and gentle malt. Subtly peppery, some oak spice. Great contrast to the fruity-sweet side. In addition, very slightly chocolatey with a little milk coffee. In the background again malty, floral, some chamomile tea provides a herbal moment.

Medium length finish, rose water, lightly perfumed, honey, vanilla, mint, still slightly spicy, fruity notes slowly fading,

20 years old, from the refill bourbon hogshead. The color is not too dark straw gold, maybe the refill hogshead has been used several times. But that doesn't have to be bad at 20 years old. There is no official information about the distillery, but old Irish whiskys can often be assumed to come from the stocks that John Teeling brought from Cooley.

    • Nose
The aroma of the whisky is very fruity and sweet. There are ripe apples that have a slightly floral note, juicy pears with coconut water. The vanilla is strong but not tart, that is vanilla sugar with a portion of vanillin. The aromas are rather light fruity, sweet and floral.
    • Taste
The taste of the whisky is also lightly fruity and sweet, the vanilla sugar is present, elderflower syrup is added. After the sweetness comes wood that is not old and musty, coconut water comes with a few coconut shells. However, these tart parts cannot assert themselves, the whisky remains sweet and floral.
    • Finish
For a 20 year old whisky it is not very persistent, the old and deep aromas are missing. Above all, the sweetness with artificial vanilla remains, wood aromas are almost hidden and only open up with more intense aftertaste.

This Dream of Ireland is sweet and palatable, fruity-floral, as you would expect from an Irish whisky - but actually it is not what you would expect from a 20-year-old whisky. I don't find much complexity, the sweetness predominates, but there is an artificial element to it, and the vanilla has aspects of artificial flavor as well. There are no primarily young or even immature aromas, of course - but there is also no complex depth. The issue price is €198 – so expectations are naturally higher. This is a solid whisky, it has the sweet fruity bourbon hogshead character, it's good - but younger and cheaper bottlings can do that too.

    Rumored to be a Cooley.

I'm looking forward to future bourboncask releases from Brühl. This was a great start.
