Oh. The first review. And no adulation, so far in advance. The drop is not particularly accessible. You have to like bitterness. At least at the beginning. That's not a flaw per se, but I don't like it at all in this form. Hence my differentiated rating.
Not a drop to start the evening.

It starts great. Currant, raspberry lovage, nuts. Very intensive. Here you look forward to discovering everything else. Alcohol well integrated too.
    • Taste
      77 77
Strong and fruity at the beginning. A sweetness flashes. Then it changes direction, strong bitterness in the first and second sip almost completely displaces fruit and sweetness. Not better with water either. I do not really like it that much. From the third sip, your tongue gets used to it.
In this respect, a very differentiated picture. Glad I had a 3cl dram. First/second sip tended towards 70p because it was really too bitter. 3rd sip then more like 80, 4th even towards 87 again.
    • Finish
      81 81
Here the bitterness slowly subsides again. More pleasant from sip to sip.
The later part of the finish reminds me of strong Glenfarclas. And I really like that. Were it not for the initial bile...

    rust brown.
    Nice color.
    Tells a lot.

    The nose is intense!
    I would almost say 60%.
    Flavors come with time.
I almost think the sherry is so intense
    that it is almost imperceptible.
There is more of an old, fermented, almost dirty note...

And yet it exudes something innocent.
The wood aromas are delicate and beautiful,
you can tell the young age here.
The initial haze of alcohol is gone
he is developing really well now...

    Yes, young and impetuous!
He is powerful in the beginning,
exudes its sherry aroma, paired with these soft notes of wood.
Not sweet, rather tart and spicy.
I don't think it should have been in the barrel much longer.
    Well chosen timing.

I like it, you can tell the age
it is powerful but not complex.

Deanston is one of the Highland Distilleries that work quite unspectacularly, but bring great whiskys to the market. There is an appealing core range and there are always great bottlings from the independent bottlers. Here the Brühler Whiskyhaus has a Deanston from the PX Hogshead, 13 years old, dark but not too dark yet. The lady on the label appears a bit opulently perfumed - we'll see if that suits a down-to-earth Highland whisky.
    • Nose
Luckily it's not perfumed. It's a sherry whisky, you can't deny that in the aroma. But it is not too sweet, but also has tart and bitter notes. Slightly fermented orange peel with cinnamon and herbs, rosemary and oregano. The orange note becomes stronger with water, warm orange juice is added.
    • Taste
This whisky is also not flattering at first sip. That makes it good and interesting, because nothing is more boring than the superficial sherry bombs. So this Deanston offers more, but needs some water. Then he has dark bitter chocolate with cinnamon and cloves, maybe some grated orange zest. The aromas remain a bit reserved overall - but they are there, and wood is also added at the end.
    • Finish
The PX cask has not led to primary, overlying sweetness, but sweetness remains present in the mouth and is contrasted by tart bitterness, wood and then herbs and lovage.

A Highlander who is a bit reserved. This distinguishes him from the superficially opulent lady on the cover. But somehow this whisky is also opulent - but it does not want to reveal this immediately and thus invites you to taste it several times. And this aftertaste is something you like to do. A good Highlander. And then a hint of sandalwood wafts across from the lady on the label, she looks up and invites you to take another sip.

I like the nose best, but then unfortunately it falls off a bit, which makes the malt seem rather average to me. But otherwise quite ok.

Fine, very subtle and yet expressive nose. Fresh berries like currants, raspberries, strawberries. There is also a slightly honey sweetness with some roasted coffee and caramelized almonds, wood, dusty, musty,
      Something reminiscent of red wine.
    • Taste
      85 85
Tingling, sharp spiciness, the alcohol pushes quite well on the palate and shows its power, while the fruit and the sweetness lose some of their presence. Coffee and some milk chocolate are added and it looks a bit stickier, slightly bland. Spices and some tobacco in the background.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-length finish, slightly bitter oak spice, vanilla, tart fruits,
