[March, 2017]  I bought this bottle for 59 Euro (116 Deutschmark) in August, 1998 and this is my last saved sample.  There are several different batches of the 1974 Ledaig.  Except this one all the others are rather weakish (but by no means bad) whiskies.  This is most probably the best batch of all 1974 Ledaigs before the distillery owner went bankrupt.  Yes, 1972  and 1973 are usually much better - but this release is at least easy drinkable (bottle production code is 19 327).

It is a rounded  and spicy malt (pepper, salt and vanilla are all present) that is mouth-coating and with a medium-length finish.  All in all a good alternative to over-prized older Ledaig bottlings (If you want to discover the original distillery profile instead of heavy-sherried Ledaigs that mask the distillery completely).  But, to be honest, I would not spend more than 150 Euros on this (as of early 2017).

The nose is very delicate, the palate is rough and bold. Nice old Ledaig.
    • Nose
Light and malty. Dry peatiness. Cold ashes. Varnish. Some grassy notes as well.
    • Taste
Unexpectedly astringent and peaty. Firm and direct. Spices of nutmeg and black pepper. But also buttery notes with a metalic edge. Engine oil. Slightly sharp.
    • Finish
Quite long. Very salty and some eucalyptus. Liquorice.

Chalky, vitamin c chewables, flint, minerals. Not much peat at all. Soft honey, light herbs. It’s decent stuff, if not a little modern? Still a quality dram, but perhaps no wow factor.

    Chunky, meaty, savoury.
Sourdough/beef stew/white grape on the palate.

Less peat than I was expecting on the nose but it is there on the palate. It is a fizzy, vibrant peat that mixes well with the sherry.
I like the fruit on show here but I am struggling to pin down exactly what it is.
There is a little orange and date , but the quality is decent.

    <Was a Blind Sample>
Easy drinking, not high in Abv. If I heard afterwards that this was a Ledaig, I had not completely removed it at first. This does not correspond at all with the profile of the current Ledaigs.
    • Nose
Light, fresh, fruity, citrus. Little soapy water, hay.
    • Taste
Fresh, honey, citrus, peach. Easy drinking, friendly.
    • Finish
Somewhat short, citrus. Somewhat dry. Wood influences.

    sample.

Very interesting. Peat level is perfect here.
    • Nose
The nose is dominated by a mild pepper note. Some Vanilla, salt and slightly ashy. Nice mossy note. Slightly spicy and even a bit of Chocolate in there. Generally speaking the nose is rather simple, but quite good.
    • Taste
Quite woody in the arrival. Then some vanilla and a strong, sharp lemon note. Gets slightly sweeter and softer with a bit of chocolate and even some fresh fruit. Maybe unripe plums. Apart from the salt there is not much peat going on.
    • Finish
Medium long. Salty, musty. Even bit sharp. Nice spicy after taste.
