The aroma is dense, enveloping, fat: vanilla, cream, linseed oil, a bit of minerality (stones, earth), a hint of smoke, plum compote, ginger, skin. With a drop of water, fruit, vegetable theme and wax. The taste is slightly spicy, sweet: pepper and other spices, licorice, candied fruit, citrus notes, wax, tea, smoke, small bitterness. The aftertaste is long, slightly astringent: tea, fruit, candied fruit, licorice, wax, smoke. In the development of ashes and a hint of tobacco. Conclusion . A perfect example of Japanese craftsmanship. Well-built whisky with a multifaceted aroma, deep taste and a soft long aftertaste. You can experiment with water. It's good without it. Rating: 90 (n23t23f22b22).

Donders, what a nice whisky! If you still want to purchase it (can still be found) then you pay the main prize for this. There is a real hype surrounding this distillery and Japanese whisky in general. It is a whisky that gets richer and more complex from a few drops of water, but be careful with it! it would be a shame if you would ruin such a unique (and expensive) whisky. Take your time and you will be rewarded with a wealth of exotic and rich aromas

    • Nose
A fruity, elegant, rich, balanced and complex whisky with notes of black currants, red berries, papaya, coconut, jasmine, pear candies, leather, hedge leaves, tea, mint, spearmint, sawdust, soft sherry notes, cashew nuts, pepper, vanilla, cassia, hint to clove, syrup, linseed oil, ripe plums, raisins, cedar, oak, sweet ginger, earthy notes, mandarins, orange peel, bergamot, beeswax, butter, floral notes and a hint of light smoky sandalwood
    • Taste
A deeply layered, rich, intriguing and complex whisky with notes of resin, apple, almond, ginger, pickled ginger, salt, varnish, green tea, cinnamon, earl gray tea, orange, kumquat's, licorice, white pepper, aniseed, prunes , hint to cherries, dates, hint to smoke, mango, pineapple, melon, ash, honey, rich oak (without the heavy bitterness), chilli, toffee, gooseberries and oriental spices.
    • Finish
A long, fresh sour and rich aftertaste with notes of red berries, jams, green tea, pepper, earthy notes, soft drying oak, ginger and spices.

    purchased sample
    • Nose
Rather elegant and 'orange,' with a bit of oaky varnish. Surprisingly
mute here, though elements of sawdust are present. It takes some time,
but it does open a bit more. Light red sherry notes, soft nuts like
cashews, and pepper from the wood. (with water) More light tropical
fruits, though this also becomes a bit more alcoholic. Barely, but
enough. Honey and a pleasant oily quality - flax seed? Earthy, subtly,
of drops from a damp forest.
    • Taste
Very lovely! More in the mouth than on the nose. Tropical and lush
fruits. Mango, pineapple, and cantaloupe. Very elegant varnish, ash,
honey, and chili pepper. (with water) Much simpler here. Honey, ash,
oily, great wood (like a wooden bourbon cask). Simpler, but I may prefer
      it for the ashy quality.
    • Finish
Pretty much the same thing going on here. It reminded me, with water, a
bit of a well aged HP, though maybe a bit ashier, a nice little addition
      to the dram.
