Whisky Reviews for Springbank 10-year-old

76 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.25 points

  1. FernetBranco did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    Issue price March 2022: ~GBP 89.00

    (e.g. https://mailchi.mp/tyndrumwhisky.com/sprinbank-localbarley2022)

5 minutes after Ballot ends, the first one is in the shop for 1,200 GBP...

  2. Gris scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    870 to 1150£... LOL

I've tasted it few days ago and, if it deserves a note of 88/100 or maybe 89/100.

  3. Morrisson scored this whisky 85 points Member Junior

The whisky is good, there is no doubt. It tastes great and knowing how it was made is providing the last little edge.
Though, I have no idea where the hype is coming from. There are 15.000 bottles of thos filling. Springbank has not upped the price at all whatsoever. The consumers, so us, have done so. Nobody has any right to complain at all. Bottlings with 200 or even less available bottles, are sold for way less than this. An Arran 10 is a super easy comparison to this one. I know, those of you who paid a fortune for a single bottle are going to be upset now, but because none of you actually did try the Local Barley, you will never know. You know how much money youn can make with it and that's all that matters to you.
I have four bottles and will pop them all, because this is an easy to sip Single Malt. Now be gone and let me enjoy these bottles, for which I paid a metric ton less than most of you.

15,000 bottles? an RRP of 130 euros and commercial and private retailers are trying to find investors who will spend 900 euros on the bottle? Who should pay 900 euros with almost no limitation, a ridiculous 10 years and such a light color? Even if you are an investor, what should you expect? What can you get for the bottle in 5-10 years? The risk of loss is immense...

And then dealers (deinwhisky.de) try to present themselves generously and advertise at 900 euros that the difference of 770 euros to the RRP will be donated to victims in the Ukraine. That can no longer be surpassed in terms of perversion. Prices, margins and demand have exploded in recent years, which should also benefit retailers. So if you want to do something good, do it and don't use it as a marketing gimmick... It's really cheap compared to whisky.

A good 10-year-old Springbank in terms of taste, but as you can see from most senior experts, hardly anyone gives more than 90 points... From my point of view, even the RRP of 130 euros is at the upper limit and hype etc. is already priced in here...

    https://www.whiskynotes.be/2022/springbank/springbank-10-years-local-barley-2022/

Nose: a nice mix of hob nobs, garden fruit sweetness, lemon zest, leafy notes and broken branches. Then also wildflowers, sheep wool and wet gravel. A whiff of vanilla ice cream and custard. Light touches of new plastics. Graphite. A bit simple, to be honest. It’s the most classic Springbank nose, there’s less of the typical greasy smoke and minerality.

Mouth: that’s more like it. More coastal, with a slightly muddy / farmy side, chalky notes, linseed oil and gentle mineral peat, as well as sweet grapefruit, lime and plum cake. Some resinous and medicinal notes. Seawater. Ink. Subtle vanilla sweetness in the background.

Finish: quite long, chalky and mineral, with plenty of salty notes.

A good 10 year old Springbank, definitely, even though I find the nose a little disappointing. The release price was £ 90. Since the whisky is decent but not really exceptional, I think it’s well worth the original price, but not the secondary market excesses. Unfortunately even retailers are practicing secondary market tactics these days…

  6. LukeFive scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Single dram note. This whisky isn't worth anywhere secondary prices. If it would be so Springbank themselves would adjust the price. Don't get stuck in the hype. Regardless of that this is unique and complex whisky that deserves your full attention. Mine tasting notes doesn't do it a justice since the dram was changing/traveling constantly. Benefits from addition of the water.
    • Nose
      89 89
vanilla ice cream, salted caramels, broken branches, plastics, coal
    • Taste
      88 88
soft, lemons, mud, hint of rubber, dank earthy notes, tar, old garage tools, linseed oil, minerals
    • Finish
      90 90
The flavours keeps developing and long, entertaining finish

  7. HKWhiskyExplorer scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

The secondary price is way too discouraging for whisky lovers who actually want to drink it rather than flipping it over and over.

  8. OJK scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Some recognisable elements from last year’s 12 year old cask strength (WB192086), with both being 100% ex-bourbon casks. This allows the more mineral and citrus side of Springbank to come through, with plenty of brine and plasticine, as well as wonderful candied lemon and buttery glue. Perhaps some added oil and density compared to the 12 year old cask strength, but very similar quality.

  9. Baanaanaabob scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Cristallised sugar, candied white peach, lemon drops, marzipan, vanilla, bit mineral, a bit less on cereals and sweeter than the 12yo CS 55.9% but of very similar quality, balanced and enjoyable.

  10. herby.usa scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

My local dealer got me a bottle at an absolutely fair price. Thank you Peter
    • Nose
      90 90
      vanilla, salty/mineral, hint of citrus,
      fresh fruity notes, malty,
      honey sweetness,
I don't have any smoke yet, but somehow a cedar wood note.

Conclusion: Bottle freshly opened - there will definitely be more to come. But it is already a nice sniffer and the taste is "simple" and yet interesting.
    • Taste
      92 92
      Start: Sparkling, salty/sweet
      becomes creamy, vanilla/biscuit
      Coffee, a hint of smokiness
everything mixes to a syrupy sweetness, malt, sugar/honey, coffee/cocoa mass
    • Finish
      90 90
long finish with notes of malt, tannins, coffee
      and always the salty tingling

Oh my God. I hope all passionate whisky lovers don't fall for this sleazy comedy. It is incomprehensible what justifies such a price apart from pure greed. Keep your sanity and don't promote this artificial hype.

A balanced, austere and stripped down expression of Springbank. The spirit takes the stage and it performs.
    • Nose
      88 88
Classic Springbank. Chalky and mineral, wet wool. Almost fishy like anchovies. Vanilla ice cream, distant whiffs of fruitiness, cooked vegetables and mashed potatoes.
    • Taste
      90 90
Coastal, sweet and slightly spicy. Again chalk and the typical bardyard note. Sweet lemon juice, fruit cake, drying and saline, hearty pepper mix. Fabulous.
    • Finish
      89 89
Chalky and salty. Smooth and pretty long. Hints of fruits and damp smoke.

  13. Seeraubaer did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Would have liked to have bought and tried this Springbank, but it could not be found at any retailer in Germany at the normal starting price. I suspect these greedy dealers keep the bottles allocated to you at the fair starting price and sell it on the secondary market at astronomical prices, thereby depriving avid Springbank/Longrow drinkers who are not millionaires of the chance to enjoy this great stash. A shame!

  14. sagara-kun scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Frankly a good surprise. I expected much worse, even if it remains quite simple.
Nice austere sweetness, lifted by slightly bitter dried apple skin and nice smoke.
    88.5
    • Nose
      88 88
Super sensitive nose, on a sweet cereal and barley, with a small floral side. Big side toast.
Light glucose syrup, dried apple skin.
Very light dust. We feel the young age but it does not explode in the nose.
    • Taste
      89 89
In the mouth, we also start with dried apple skin, sprinkled with brown sugar.
      Light toast, scone,
      Slight minerality and austerity.
      Very light smoke.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long, buttery finish with scone, raisin and apple skin.
      Light smoke.
      Slight gooseberry acidity.

Clear vanilla ice cream, granulated sugar, white peach candy, marzipan, grated coconut, oak, crème brûlée - I feel like I'm in the Raffaello commercial.
    • Taste
Martim, fresh spices, vanilla and marzipan again, chalk, mineral notes, grapefruit, orange peel.
    • Finish
Dirty notes and some wood, relatively clear grapefruit and slightly dry citrus fruits.

I think this is my favorite Springbank Local Barley, i have tasted the 2020 and 2019, but this one is really good.

  17. nallacam scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    To me, that's a barrel-strong 10-year-old.
Air is very good for him and makes him much more complex, but only in the nose.

For £89, quite a good PLV.
    • Nose
      88 88
      Citrus fresh, mineral and dry.
Very reduced and salty, Riesling, oyster water...slowly a hint of sweetness, like honey....
Cereal notes, dough and freshly sliced bread.
The Springbank character comes through and makes you want to take the first sip.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet smoke....that was it for now.
The mouth is actually the weakest part for me.
      That's where the least happens
    • Finish
      86 86
Dry, persistent, lime, lemon juice....slowly mellowing.

What a great whisky! I don't have any bottles for sale or stocks of these, but this is definitely my profile. A cross between tropical fruit, lightly peat and light lime. The prices being asked are not worth it, but the issue price of £89 is simply insane. Great whisky!

I think the relatively low abv helps give it a slightly more gentler profile than previous releases. I'm on board!
    • Nose
The colour is about as pale as I've seen on a Local Barley release. Truly the opposite of last year's release. It's a pretty recognisable Springbank, not too dissimilar from the regular 10-year-old. Earthy smoke, soot, ozone and wet pebbles, but also some vanilla ice cream, grapefruit and lemon pith, with just a sprinkle of nougat.
    • Taste
Proper oily mouthfeel with some charred lemon, tobacco leaves and aniseed. It displays a nice salinity and earthy peat notes alongside a fruity sweetness. There's honey, mango and lime zest.
    • Finish
Sweet smoke, sprinkle of salt and wet pebbles. Long.

Even though I'm a Springbank fan, I'm a bit disappointed by this one. It lacks complexity in my view. Maybe expectations are simply too high due to the hype.
    • Nose
Lots of lime. A bit of avocado. Water adds a whiff of vanilla.
    • Taste
Lemon, also slightly towards lemon candy. A little malt and peat. Water adds a touch of mint.

Sweet lime and green apple. More peat now.

    • Nose
Fruity, with notes of apples and unripe pears. A touch of lemons. Vanilla too, mixed with a pinch of sea salt. A floral note. Then minerals and some chalk. The well-known Springbank farmyard smell is here but not very pronounced, although this develops later on. A light peat note too.
    • Taste
A lovely creamy mouthfeel. Vanilla custard. A little bit of peat, followed by that nice typical farmyard note. Candied Lemons. Minerals and chalk. Then pink grapefruit. A touch of pepper, but also sea salt.
    • Finish
Mid-long to long, with a hint of lemons, chalk and sea salt.

  33. Whisky_Liner scored this whisky 74 points Member Senior

Nice nose: citrus notes with lots of orange, nice honey sweetness, light hay notes, hardly any smoke and a fine spice and nice caramel

Palate: Less nice. Alcohol is well integrated and is nice and oily, but the cereal notes dominate too much. Citrus notes and orange are hardly there anymore. The spice is still there

In the finish a subtle sweetness with light smoke..

Conclusion: A nice nose but very disappointing on the palate and not worth the money..

Nose: Very fresh in the first impression. Lemon. Maritime-salty. Beeswax, relatively clear and harmonious. I miss the dirt a bit here, I don't know if I would have come blindly onto a Springbank. Hardly written, I realize you just have to wait and be patient. Now comes light smoke, motor oil and garage air. Of course Springbank. Nice. Very round nose
Mouth: continues the same way here, strong and dirty, gas station air in the mouth, rubber tires, plus idle sweetness, black bread crumbs and custard.
Finish: rather bitter, very little sweetness, but overall still harmonious. Slightly metallic and peppery.

Conclusion: nice spring bank, not complex, a bit youthful here and there but really tasty. It's fun in the glass! 88 points

Maybe a little too mineral for my taste, but pleasant to drink and of a nice complexity for a 10 year old.
    • Nose
Lemony nose, diluted honey, earthy, cereal, iodized and mineral with a nice smoke behind.
    • Taste
Oily and very mineral mouth, very fruity and lemony. Cereal. We find a lot of nose in fact. Nice spices. A few medicinal bandages.
    • Finish
Final with a maritime smoke, malted cereals. Unsweetened vanilla.

    April 10, 2022 At current prices, I don't think it's equal.
But if you think about the price, maybe I can add 1-2 points to it, and it is still quite delicious.
