  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

It's nice enough for an 8 year old, though already somewhat overdone on cask influence: a fairly dry, woody and peppery experience. Personally I think Kilkerran works better with (a significant proportion of) bourbon casks in the mix. I would pick the regular 12 and 16 year olds over this any day.
    • Nose
      87 87
Earthy, savory, nutty, wood polish, slight leather, dark fruits, sour cherry, sultana, plum, spicy on nutmeg and clove, dry breadcrums, pencils.
    • Taste
      85 85
Strong alcohol, sour and sweet fruits, cherries, plum, red currants, unripe blackberries, peppery spices (black pepper and chili's), more nuttiness, slightly leathery, espresso, dry clove and nutmeg.
    • Finish
      86 86
Quite long: dark sour fruits, cherrie and plum, some wood polish, black liquorice, peppery spices, drying and dusty wood notes.

By far not as sticky / fudgy as batch 5. It's back to the drier style of batch 4, except that this one is a lot maltier.
    • Nose
      88 88
Redcurrant, strawberry, Printen, salted caramel, peat, hazelnut and malt.
    • Taste
      87 87
Redcurrant, malt, peat, raspberry, tobacco and hazelnut. Water adds a maltiness like grain cookie.
    • Finish
      87 87
Peat, hazelnut paste, redcurrant and malt.

    Neat
Nose is rather unbalanced changing between Sherry and earth
Oaky and sweet in the mouth, nothing remarkable in the finish

With water. No big change, a bit more pleasant but nothing to write home about.

Very earthy character, unfortunately one-sided barrel-heavy-spicy on the palate with a lack of balance.
    • Nose
      85 85
Earthy, almost musty smoke, hazelnut, coffee, kakap, beetroot, behind it raisins, candied grapes, spices and a fruity-perfumed note, exciting
      Alcohol integrated surprisingly well
    • Taste

Again, it starts out earthy, woody and nutty. A little coniferous forest. Some dark chocolate. Very barrel-heavy.
      Alcohol stays well integrated

Fades away on lots of oak and some pepper with a little dates. medium length

Kilkerran 8 year old 2022 sherry casks 58.1%.

25ml sample at home Aug 2022.

    Mid tone amber orange.

Aroma is mocha and Camp coffee syrup, burnt oak – it’s almost beyond ‘normal’ barrel char into charred log fire, overcooked fruit cake, Christmas pudding, some plasticky notes, waxy orange peel. Plenty going on. A mixed bag- one sniff is cakey and the next fumey. On the whole I like it though.

    Body is moderately oily.

The first thing I notice is how ridiculously low impact the alcohol is on the palate. 58%? It actually drinks like 35%, no exaggeration.

The mocha and char notes start things off, exactly like the aroma. Then the plasticky dates, but the dates have an unusual burnt flavour. The finish almost starts in the mid-palate. It has that initial punch of sweet-savoury burnt dark fruit flavour, then becomes waxy and alcoholic in the mid palate and doesn’t do anything on the swallow. It has a very odd finish – almost none at all, leaving a space at the back of your tongue that you had hoped would be filled. The linger is spicy, burnt wood, ethanol. No smoke.

It’s okay stuff. Some nice aspects. I’m yet to be sold on the Kilkerran character but I like that they experiment, that they focus on authenticity and that they sell at a reasonable price. 3.4/81

With a little splash of water and a wait... The aroma settles on ginger-infused dark chocolate. The body is lighter. The taste shifts so that less of the flavour is up front. It gets a little waxy, medicinal, woody resin in the middle and NOW there’s a finish. Still not really smoky but there’s a light tamarind sweetness on the swallow followed by lingering char. One to nose neat and drink with a little water. 3.425/82

Kilkerran 8 years, Sherry Cask Matured Batch 6, 58.1%. Original bottling (2022). Ageing: sherry casks

Nose: Dirty comes to mind first. First of all, I have to think of an old cellar shack and heating oil that has been drawn into the ground. This smell is pushed aside by quite intense and even obtrusive fruits. I smell cherries and Federweißer, plus fudge and raisins, maybe some figs too. I also find milk cream and cappuccino.

Palate: Full-bodied, earthy, spicy. Schnapps chocolates, cherry liqueur, caramel pudding. In addition, the Kilkerran gets a strong and slightly spicy flavor, including ginger and a hint of cinnamon. I also find cedar wood, resin and dark chocolate for gentlemen.

Finish: Long and warming, some tobacco and burnt toast. In addition, a heavy sweetness in addition to the still existing sharpness.

Conclusion: An exciting whisky, if you also notice its young age. The alcohol isn't always ideally integrated, but that doesn't have to be the case with such a heavyweight. 85/100 points (2022).

A proper Kilkerran bottled at cask strenght with a full sherry character that might also result slighlty peated.

Great whisky, it tastes much better to me than from a Porto wine barrel. Intensively fruity with the dominance of ripe cherries.
Alcohol is practically not noticeable. If I did not know that it is close to 60%, I would think that it is the basic version of 40%.
    With water
The aroma of only and only strong sherry, more sweet, heavy, a typical "jug", the oak is completely gone +
Taste ... sweet, but not as fruity anymore, very visible sherry, a delicate bitterness, no chocolate, delicate chamois leather "minus"
The finish is worse, only medium-long.

    Summary
You should drink only and exclusively in the original without being watered down.
    • Nose
      88 88
sweet, intense, strong sherry, oak, juicy ripe cherries, plums, hay
    • Taste
      89 89
very sweet, fruit jelly, ripe cherries, sultanas, the end turns into chocolate notes
    • Finish
      88 88

Full whisky, present. A lot of red fruits, spiciness. Quite smooth and drinkable for its Abv, surprisingly. Only some subtle peat in the finish. Very pleasant and balanced, and mature for only 8 years old.
    • Nose

A lot of red fruits berries, prunes, quite some alcohol. A bit earthy.

Forest fruits, like blueberries and brambles, followed by figs. Tobacco leaves. Rich honey and caramel fudge. Then dark chocolate and hazelnuts. A note of balsamic vinegar. Later also a touch of leather.
    • Taste
A trace of smoke. Earl grey tea. The same forest fruits, but this time also black cherries. Tobacco leaves and an earthy note. Dark chocolate. Followed by nutmeg and a pinch of black pepper.
    • Finish

Very effective and excellent value for money at the outlet price for an 8yo SC. Alcohol may disturb depending on the day and the ventilation. Nice delicacy.
    • Nose
Hazelnut and coconut nose. Well-balanced mix of dried fruits and stone fruits. Earthy chocolate, woodsy leather. Nice sherry.
    • Taste
Powerful, dense palate. Walnuts and oak, plums and dried figs. Light balsamic vinegar. Little vegetal freshness. Alcohol sometimes too present depending on the sips.

Unlike its predecessor, it doesn't have the slightest hint of sulphur. "Classic" Kilkerran nose (if you want to speak of classic now), the attack is quite rapid, but substantial, and it welcomes its time on the finish.
    • Nose
      88 88
Earthy, loamy and with a pleasant barrel mustiness and cellar mustiness. Sweet and overripe grapes and blackberries (still) in the background, now before the curtain: juicy sultanas, figs, dates. It doesn't take long for the sweet fruits to push their way to the front, now there are also cherries and plums. No sign of sulphur.
    • Taste
      87 87
Crisp, demanding start, in which very sweet berries and grapes tumble directly onto the tongue - yes, tumble, "glide" would be the wrong term for this very powerful start. Dust-dry floorboards, but at the same time earthy and loamy with damp autumn leaves, moldy bark and forest mushrooms. Cherry jam, some dark chocolate (a bit older and therefore crumbly).
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium length and very dry, a plank of oak on the tongue. Spices have captured the berry and fruit sweetness to some extent, but it's still very sweet on the finish.

I had a chance to buy it for 150 euros 1 or 2 times, but I didn't think that was the case 6

I remember being amazed at the intense sulfur and burning rubber in batches 4 and 5.

Nose: It has a plausible sherry note. I like the harmony of the deep scent of dried fruit and the peat underneath. Because of the age and the number of years of aging, the nose quickly becomes tired.

Palette: Dry. The bitter taste of cacao spreads in your mouth and feet leak out. However, I don't like it because it has a spirit of low maturity. Do you suddenly remember kcs? My neck hurts when I fall.

Finish: Medium finish with a hint of chocolate.

Overall Review: There is a feeling of low ripeness, but except for this, the sher-pits fall off neatly.

    I bought a 2cl at Cadenheads for 4 euros.

I really like it for 95 euros, for 150 it would be a bit too expensive for me, but I find the profile to be straight, clean and well made.
    • Nose
      88.5
Clearly that was an Oloroso cask. Spicy notes of coffee, earth and a heavy shrry sweetness that is neither sticky nor mushy.
In the nose, the alcohol is surprisingly well integrated for the age, but the aromas are initially heavy.
Over time, however, it becomes a little less compact and now there is a light-dark wood note, tobacco and a light red wine note with tannins. A cherry note can be found at the back.

I find the balance very good and I've always really liked these Kilkerran-Oloroso cask strengths when they're not overloaded. There was one that I remember in particular because I thought it was exceptionally good at 90 points - unfortunately this one doesn't quite match that, but it's still very good and clean. I can't say exactly why I don't like this one, because nothing really bothers me about this whisky, but today it just doesn't really grab me.
    • Taste
      88.5
Due to the alcohol content, I recommend only taking a very small sip at a time. Dry, spicy sweetness and again lots of coffee powder, again a bit of wood, some plum puree and at the end again young notes of deep red cherries with tobacco and some leather.
    • Finish
Medium length and dry wood, then you can feel the strength of the barrel in the throat.

Much better than last year's edition, the Kilkerran 8 Years Sherry Cask Matured is balanced and intrigues.
    • Nose
Arrives on toffee and fudge with a slight lactic element also, quickly followed by raspberries and figs. There's mocha, almonds and earthy peat smoke, as wel as a tinge of leather, some dried tobacco leaves, milk chocolate and a pinch of cinnamon. Sweet and fresh and gorgeous. Most importantly, no sulphur.
    • Taste
Rich, creamy and with plenty of farmy notes, as well as some oak spices, tobacco and very earthy, yet subtle peat smoke. Touches of pralines, cherry syrup and burnt toast also. Finally just a sliver of rubber.

  55. Dottore scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Very different in character to the Port Cask. Much heavier and earthier-dirtier, contrary to the fresh lightness of the port cask. But by no means worse, overall I find it actually rounder and the alcohol better integrated. On the nose, the sherry cask impresses with caramel, toffee, panettone, cherry and coffee notes. Balsamic vinegar. In the mouth cherry, dark chocolate mon cherie, vanilla pudding, musty and somewhat fermented but without sulphur. In fact, somehow dirtier than the Port Cask, much heavier, when I thought of the Port I still thought of mild summer evenings, so the brother here is more for cold evenings by the fireplace. Heavy on the finish, only slightly hot, candied ginger and orange peel, musty and coffee beans. Overall, somehow more harmonious, although I still have to think back to the wonderful strawberry jam in Port Cask. 88 points.

  58. OJK scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Some of the same delicious elements that were found in last year’s oloroso 8 year old (WB176854), with toffee, mocha, prune, earthy smoke, cherry syrup and balsamic vinegar. However it doesn’t have quite the same density or balance, and therefore displays its youth more transparently. Therefore delicious but not beyond its years.
