  1. thijs100 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Good but never really satisfying, I find the Kilkerran 8 Years Port Cask Matured lacks the distillery's DNA and is too reliant on the Port cask.
    • Nose
The port influence is quite intense, masking some of the Kilkerran character. The earthy smoke is not very noticeable even. Big whiffs of cherry marmelade, cassis and even some aceto di balsamico. Also faint touches of linseed oil, nail varnish and shoe polish. Ending on nougat, mocha and a hint of leather.
    • Taste
More smoky now. Earthy whiffs, jammy fruits, plenty of caramel and some light notes of straw. Some dirty touches as well, enhanced by coffee grounds and liquorice.
    • Finish
Lingering oak spices and syrupy winey notes.

    • Nose
Leather, caramel, heavy sweetness, black currant, typical autumn whisky
    • Taste
      dark fruits, fruity sweetness
    • Finish
pleasant, slightly sweet bitter notes such as dark chocolate

I actually think Port Finish is very good, but not all of them.
    • Nose

      Chocolate, plums, dried grapes.
    • Taste

      Spicy, sweet chocolate, oak.

Also in the aftertaste the chocolate note, light smoke, earthy.

  5. EvilAFI scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

It’s very dirty, powerful, young and heavy cask influenced. Not quite my jam, but fun to try!
    (Recommend adding water highly)
    • Nose
      87 87
Big grape, dirty (sherry funk esq), lemon sherbet, peat is farmy (water brings out caramel)
    • Taste
      88 88
Bold, peat is strong here, ashy, the sweetness is still here as grape kool aid, but a nice spiciness (red peppers) to balance, a oaky char bite as well (water brought out a sweetness and a funk like over ripe papaya)
    • Finish
      88 88
Peat, char, grape leafs, baking spices, (water made a nice sweetness and longer finish)

    Sample courtey of a friend.

Kilkerran was never my favourite malt - I find it too dirty, among many things - and this bottling unfortunately showed all the wrong things that I find unattractive.

It's bitey, ashy, acrid, metallic, and most of all it's all over the place. Adding water and letting it breathe accentuate more of menthol cigarette and mushroom notes, which I found not really working in this case. The nose was surprisingly okay, but it was all downhill from that.

Some will inevitably like this malt more than I did (hence the score), but I'm glad I don't have a whole bottle of it. I did not like the Sherry cask bottling that much although I have a bottle of that, but this scores much lower than that.
    • Nose
Tobacco, ashy, cheap perfume, overripe pineapples, slightly fishy, roasted nuts, copper
    • Taste
Bite-y, tar, char, ashy, menthol, metallic, mushrooms, sour plum, acrid smoke, coffee grinds
    • Finish
Resinous, burnt ends, dry smoke, hint of fish, chili pepper, slightly vegetal end

  7. gallfux did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Well, it's a relatively young and charged whisky. That seems a bit artificial and leaves no room for the distillery character. I prefer the 12 or 16. For me they are more honest and have a better profile.

8 years, Port Cask Matured, Cask Strength. Another young Kilkerran from the Glengyle Distillery in the immediate vicinity of Springbank and thus also infected by their hype. This is bad for us connoisseurs.

    www.glen-efze.de
    • Nose
The fruit aromas are lighter than the sherry bottling, here are red fruits, aspects of strawberries and raspberries, a mixture of light smoke, wood and block malt, the scent of a ripe grain field with a little fire in the far background.
    • Taste
This whisky can also use some water. Here the smoke is heavier than sherry, the whisky has more roughness, maybe some match sulphur. It's wilder and more fiery than the sherry variety, but still doesn't look too young. However, the sweetness is quickly replaced by smoky alcohol and some bitterness from the wood.
    • Finish
First the alcohol burns a bit in the cheek pouches, then smoke, bitter chocolate with salted caramel, and some wood remain. And a hint of sulphur...

The Port Cask Matured looks a little younger than the Sherry Cask Matured, but is also mature and delicious. These would both be wonderful whiskys to drink and enjoy.

  9. Tomatin1980 scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

The rather active port casks mask the raw youth of this full strength Kilkerran. Rather enjoyable for the extra layers that this brings, but all in all you miss the beauty of the Kilkerran spirit. In such a way, the output from the Glengyle distillery is much like the neighbours at Springbank: it withstands active casks quite well, but at a cost of loosing nuance.

Too much alcohol noticeable. The pure alcoholic taste dominates.
Absolutely too expensive for a schnaps taste.

Just as charged and young as its Sherry twin. Only this time with port paint. The nose still works and the sticky sweet port dampens the start, but from there it goes downhill.
You get what it says on the tin, it's not outstanding.
    • Nose
      88 88
Dark-fruity-sweet port muff blows towards you. Dark chocolate, wet earth, a bit of balsamic cream and a slightly metallic tinge
    • Taste
      85 85
Powerful start. A bit milder than the Sherry twin, but heavy here too. Sticky sweetness covers everything at first. Then berries and earth notes dissolve.
    • Finish
      85 85
Again dominated by sweet port and earth. A little wooden barrel and chocolate, the metallic tinge becomes even clearer here.

Super malt that doesn't show its youth. Dark fruits, chocolate, a subtle spiciness paired with minimal smoke in the background.

  21. HammerHead scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Ok, but not great. My suspicions are confirmed; port matured whisky just rarely works for me. This is too spicy and resembling of a cheap red wine with a significant amount of drying sourness. If I want to experience these types of flavours I'll keep it to the wine or port itself. Glad I didn't take the effort of hunting down an entire bottle.
    • Nose
      85 85
Earthy, nutty, slightly pickled, clear wine sourness, red fruits, sour cherry, currants, unripe grapes, sour raisins, clove pepper and dry wood.
    • Taste
      82 82
Big ol' wine and wood influence. I might have guessed already but this is just too much wood, spice and sourness for my palate. Very big and strong alcohol notes (also with with water), chili peppers, dry nuts, red fruits, cherries, grapes, berries, currants (but all is sour), drying spices like nutmeg and clove, dry wood notes.
    • Finish
      80 80
Long: sour and more sour red fruits, cheap wine, dry wood, dry pepper and clove. Not my style of maturing an actually very well made spirit.

  22. KayMeertens scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Even though it's obviously quite different from the sherry version released simultaneously, that maltiness is a prominent common characteristic that I haven't experienced in earlier batches.
    • Nose
      88 88
Sticky sweet. Raisins in milk chocolate. Salted caramel, hazelnut paste. Blackcurrant and peat. Water makes it quite malty like grain cookie.
    • Taste
      86 86
More on the sour berries like redcurrant. More of that grainy maltiness too. Peat and a little sulphur. A little caramel and red wine gum, but by far not as sweet as the nose. Water makes it even more malty and obviously very young.
    • Finish
      87 87
Redcurrant jam, prune, dark chocolate, grain cookie and peat.

Kilkerran 8 year old, port cask, 2022 release, 57.9%.

    25ml sample Aug 2022.

    Bold orange brown.

Aroma is mostly salted caramel, caramac bar, raspberry white chocolate, powdered mint.

    Body is moderately oily.

Taste is pretty easy for the abv, some tangy underripe red berry, becoming resinous and waxy, finishing with breathy smoke, rusted metal, lingering tangy wine.

The port cask and smoky spirit are discordant. Solid enough but the port cask is overdone in my book. Still, solid. 3.525/84

With a drop of water, the colour is more of a blush-pink-hued orange. The aroma is similar to how it was neat, but perhaps has more chocolate and black tea. Taste is waxy, spiced black tea, some rum, the breathy smoke opens up even more. Good. Solid, and better with a drop of water. 3.6/86

  26. nhuber scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Definitely better than the kilkerran 8 from the Sherry cask with 58,8%.

Better integration from the port cask, much cleaner nose and nicely sweet and harmonious in the mouth, though the finish is rather short. Benefits from a bit of water, I like this expression.

    With water ..
Aroma more smoke, walnut, fruitiness unchanged, a delicate cherry added

Not very complex, it looks its age for once. Gourmet for those who love style.
    • Nose
Powerful, vinous and sweet nose with a general impression of candy. Black grape, plum, port (unsurprisingly), caramel, ginger, pepper.
    • Taste
Mouth flattering, sweet. As the type of cask suggested, it is very vinous, on the mutated grapes. A pretty enveloping smoke brings an extra soul that gives a little interest to the whole. Caramel, pepper and bad eucalyptus.
    • Finish
Salty finish with smoke in transition, slightly bitter caramelized cream.

Very closed on the nose, not round, with clear Laritz notes, little fruit and sweetness. Musty port wine notes.
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste testifies to that; the port casks also come into their own here. But here, too, there is little fruit and sweetness. Not really something for port lovers. Wood and unpleasant bitter notes play their way forward.

Unlike his brother from the sherry cask, which appeared at the same time, he knows how to flatter himself on the tongue and leave a dazzling impression there. The fact that the exit is then a bit tight is easily forgiven.
    • Nose
      88 88
First of all: the color (rusty brown) shows its cask origin very nicely.
Raspberry chewing gum, Fritt chewing strips, fruit drops, cherries: the sweetness may seem artificial, but it is nevertheless very digestible and pleasant on the nose. Muff and mustiness can often be found at Kilkerran, but the maturation in Port Cask seems to completely cover this up. Milk coffee, espresso beans, caramel, block malt, nougat chocolate, almonds.
    • Taste
      89 89
Amazingly soft attack, very creamy and mouth-filling. The tongue is immediately occupied by cherries, grapes, blueberries and plums, which then quickly have to make way for dry wood, cocoa and dark chocolate. There is a hint of menthol, initially, because it disappears again after a while. It's amazing how quickly the initial creaminess disappears without losing its softness.
    • Finish
      86 86
Obviously completely exhausted on the tongue, it says goodbye faster than necessary, but without giving up shining again with delicious fruit and chocolate notes.

M: like a dry, fruity explosion ???? subtle smokiness that isn’t too ashy or sulphurous. Just delicious ????

F: it just lingers and lingers. It’s really dry. I love it

Fruity sweet start. Alcohol gets up your nose.
Red berries and wine. red wine or port wine.
Some smoke, more from the cask than from the malt.
      Herbs join in.
      Complex and interesting.

      Ohh he hits hard.
Heavy alcohol influence. The mouth sizzles properly.
      Vinous notes and herbs predominate.
      Now it's getting bitter.
Was the nose still good, in the mouth it seems a bit unbalanced.

      Vinous notes
      barrel flavors and herbs.
      Slightly bitter.

As expected, very barrel-heavy. Luckily no/hardly any sulphur. Pleasantly dry in the mouth. Great nose!
    • Nose
Extremely fruity, almost fermented: strawberries, raspberries, red grapes. Milk chocolate, matches, some tobacco.
      Very impressive!
    • Taste
Oily, creamy, very soft and at the same time warming, pleasantly dry. Fruit and chocolate are back.
    • Finish
      Very long, warming, chocolaty.

A very special Kilkerran, fragrant, tasteful and light smoke with a clear influence of the port cask.
Lasts tingly for a long time. Excellent in a word! And that for Euro 62.50. Okay, this little dram may not have that typical Kilkerran outspokenness, but I don't think that's a reason to undervalue it. Therefore a fair 89 points!

In a direct comparison with his brother from the sherry cask, the colleague is unfortunately at a disadvantage!
    • Nose
      86 86
Mild and round, pickled berries, slightly jammy, tobacco, dust, vanilla and sea salt.
The distillery character comes through well and goes quite well with the port barrel.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily and intense, sharper than its brother from the sherry cask, so not quite as round.
Berry jam, black pepper, tobacco and vanilla. With the second and third sip, a clearly bitter note is added!
    • Finish
      85 85
Long and spicy, noticeably bitter and dirty, the alcohol is still quite present, the fruit moves into the background.

Beautiful, clean (no sulfur) Campbeltown port matured whisky. Opens up nicely in the glass and with the addition of a few drops of water. Highly recommended, of course getting a bottle is the tricky part - I was able to get a bottle for a very decent price (less than €60) from a retailer who wanted to make sure the bottles he had ended up with people who actually drank them; so I opened the bottle together with him. Unfortunately these type of retailers are few and far between these days.

It's quite intense, the port influences are reflected in the aromas. But it urgently needs water to play out its nuances and is still quite aggressive on the palate, which I dislike a bit. A decent whisky, but way overpriced for what's on offer.

Directly alcoholic without water. Then roasted aromas, typical port notes with dark fruits, oak, vanilla, tobacco. It opens with water, now also citrus fruit, soy sauce, earthy notes
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweetness, grains, dark fruits, vanilla, salt, strong alcohol
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-length finish with spices, slight bitterness, oak, earthy notes and burning alcohol

As the saying goes: Other mothers also have beautiful daughters - and yet I was also willing to pay €140 for a bottle (for a bottle sharing) and I'm crazy about Campbeltown bottlings in 2022. In the last few years we have never been disappointed. The port barrel is unmistakable on the nose, slightly fermented dark fruits, here and there I imagine a slight cheesy-sour note. No sulphur. Apple compote, strawberry jam. Very very fruity. Plus grain notes. Light, fruity and fresh. Strong in the mouth but not pungent, maybe not perfectly integrated with the alcohol but absolutely drinkable. Wonderful symbiosis of fruitiness, freshness, an earthy dirtiness and the wonderful lightness of the Kilkerrand distillate. Slightly spicy tingling on the palate on the finish, a bit metallic and a lot of grandma's strawberry jam. I like it very much again, a wonderful drinking whisky for balmy summer evenings. 70€? At any time! But for the current prices I will probably do without in the future. 87 points
