a bit too much perfumed in nose and initially slightly bitter in aftertaste, but still good and balanced. 22.5/23/22.25/22.5

Tastes like balloon gum, fruits, distillery-specific characters, not dramtic but well-balanced

The time has finally come and I can deal with 29-year-old Ben Nevis in peace. Since the purchase was a bit like a cat in a poke, I'm curious what to expect. Based on previous reviews, I don't have to worry about any unpleasant surprises.

A really powerful start, in which, in addition to the noticeable alcohol, none of the aromas are too dominant to not give the others enough space. The first thing that comes to mind is a citrus fruitiness. I don't find him that cute at all. In addition to vanilla and a strong herbal spiciness (juniper, anise, ...), impressions of tobacco, furniture polish and damp leather follow.
      A really nice profile.

The alcohol is no longer as present as in the nose. Wonderfully creamy and oily. I try to keep the whisky in the front of my mouth for as long as possible. The sweetness comes paired with the caramel like a punch.
      What a sensory highlight.
      I don't find much fruit.

For me it took a little getting used to and behind the nose and palate.
Spicy and relatively short. Astringent and bitter.

All in all a wonderful bourbon cask matured whisky that does not require any frills.

Ben Nevis 1992 - 2021, 29 years, 47.4% alc. Bottler: Scoma (Glenscoma), Expansion: Bourbon cask No. 1607

Nose: The Ben Nevis is fruity and ripe. Ripe apricots in an oak bowl, with dark currant jelly. I find custard with caramel sauce, canned tangerines, shortbread cookies and sweet pie crust. There is a very light touch of peppermint tea in the background.

Palate: Different from the nose, much drier. Tangerines and hazelnuts, cranberries, pear compote, dried apricots, marzipan and bitter almonds. In addition, the whisky seems spicier, some oak, pepper and nutmeg.

Finish: Long, with dried currants, walnuts and orange marmalade, some nutmeg and cinnamon. I also find the light peppermint tea again.

Conclusion: A surprisingly gentle Ben Nevis, amazingly harmonious and the wood influences are not too strong after 29 years - really nice dram. 88/100 points (2022)

In direct comparison to the bottling from 2019 (Base-ID: 143118) a little fresher and less sweet, and somehow also a little "thinner" (less waxy/greasy). Would prefer the 2 years younger, especially considering the price tag. Regardless of the price, the 2021 is a convincing ex-BC whisky with the typical bourbon notes of vanilla and caramel, a beautiful fruit basket and a gentle menthol freshness.

The perfect balance and integration of alcohol, it is not felt at all at any stage, it is drunk like the purest water from a mountain stream. Good from the start, does not take time to open, the nose is especially pleasing

Luxurious, you don't have to wait for anything, immediately pours a wave of ripe peaches, vanilla, New Year's tangerines, pineapples. Very clean and tender, monpensier lollipops, dried fruits
    • Taste
      90 90
Citruses in oil, some roasted nuts, apricot pit, ripe Bera pears, a little enveloping persimmon
    • Finish
      90 90
Vanilla, ripe fruit, some citrus, marmalade

I will say that in the description they did not lie, the smell is sweet, honey-like, vanilla, fresh fruit, a bit of varnish on the back, and the taste is more dry, again fruity but more falling into red vanilla, a bit herbal, medium-long finish, but mega drinkable!

Approx. €308 converted to a 0.7 l bottle. There is a 29 year old single cask bottling. Ben Nevis, a distillery that enjoys my sympathies. Maybe it's also because there isn't such a hype about their products.
An independent bottler - was the cask chosen well 29 years ago? A somewhat pathetic appeal to speculators on the Scoma homepage because of the limit of one bottle per customer. Marketing strategy or concern for honest buyers?
I'm looking at the rating and reviews of previous Ben Nevis - Bourbon Cask bottlings from Scoma. The feedback is mostly positive. Yesterday finally the first review of this bottle. 90 points from TiRi - that's in the range of my expectations.
So I hit the buy button before the 17 observers give up their reluctance and I may be too late to have to resort to the secondary market at the end of the day.
