    The cask aging underscores the distillery character of the young Blair Athol very well. A thoroughly interesting mixture of aromas, but it requires some experience, because I don't find it easy to drink at first and it also needs some time and intensive discussion. No whisky for in between.

      I have sweetness, apple, light grapes, but also some herbal notes, even light liquorice notes in the nose.
    • Taste

      Starts with sweetness, relatively little fruit, then comes a lot of spice, tart herbs and the alcohol becomes noticeable with a peppery spiciness.
    • Finish
      84 84
      The medium-long finish initially brings a lot of spice with slightly bitter notes, but then surprisingly brings some sweetness with it towards the end.

    Another bottling from Michel Reick's Scotch Universe series. This time an 8-year-old Blair Athol from the 1st fill Amontillado Sherry Hogshead, which gave it a beautiful, dark gold note. Amontillado is a rather spicy sherry that is not too sweet and fruity. That should harmonize well with Blair Athol's Highland character. Blair Athol also sparkles, especially in the independent bottlings. Diageo uses it as the lead malt in their Bell's blends.

    • Nose
      The whisky needs a little time to develop in the glass. At first there are a few immature tones, but these fade away again and then make way for a rather sweet fruity note. There are ripe, soft apples, cherries and juicy blackberries. Then comes the spicy note with some wood in the background and a milk chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa and a noisette filling. The alcohol is noticeable as a freshness in the nosing and is well integrated.
    • Taste
      In the taste, the alcohol is strong, with a little water spicy notes and wood aromas appear. The whisky is subtly sweet, the sweetness is well contrasted by a slight bitter note, plus there is finely tart chocolate with fruit, thick plums with blackberries, cardamom and pepper.
    • Finish
      The finish is not particularly long, but pleasant, chocolaty tones with subtle oak spice remain. Blair Athol is a full-bodied whisky that can convince even at a young age in this maturation.

      The whisky is young but actually not immature. Blair Athol brings enough Highland flavors to harmonize well with the Amontillado and develop a mature spiciness. The whisky is tasty and easy to drink. That's a tasty dram.

    I think generally the Scotch Universe bottles are on the cask side, with spirit a bit subdued. It is the case here, too. I don't get so much Amontillado here, in a blind tasting I would probably say it is a PX cask. Coffee, peanuts, kakao/cocoa.
    Lats year's Glenturret was clear on Amonitllado and I loved it. Full nuttiness and pralines. Here, I am not so sure, although with water the whisky opened a bit and gave out some more nuts.
    I like to compare whiskies, and this bottling had bad luck as I had this beautiful Blair Athol from Elixir Distillers, a bourbon maturiation, that was full of exotic fruits and tang.
    That is why put 87, while the ElD Blair Athol I scored 89.
