N: First was the Cardhu 12 and now this, and initially they aren’t too far apart in profile. Both bottled at 40%, both with caramel, both malty with citrus touches, but the Glengoyne is cleaner and more refined. Not only that, it's profile is more precise and theres an overall feeling of refinement. It is however bland, very simple and hasn’t got half the personality compared to the Cardhu - swings and roundabouts! A late note - a hint of weak sulphured sherry casks on the nose.

T: Extremely consistent arrival and development, soft watery, malty sweetness with a touch of pepper throughout. This baby isn’t shifting or developing, its a flat liner, until that is i identify the slow release sugars into the mouth as if a barley sugar sweet is slowly dissolving in the mouth. Touch of sulphured sherry on the palate too, although slight.

F: Theres a touch of sweet freshness after the flatlining palate. Subtle, sweet, malty, E150a finish.

C: Im really struggling with this malt. It seems, 'pointless', a malt without any narrative or challenge at all. So i brought out my Bladnoch 10 F&F WB, an underrated and misunderstood malt in my opinion because its so divinely simplistic and un-precocious. The Bladnoch, wonderful stuff and quite chalky on the palate but very similar in nature to the Glengoyne. Neither do very much and both they appear rather innocuous overall. It is however that simplicity which is it’s strength and beauty, Theres always going to be huge noise for the oldest, the strongest, the peatiest… but how about an award for the simplest, an award for the most Serene? I don’t think the Glengoyne 10 would win either but it’s surely part of the starting line-up.
