Whisky Reviews for Miltonduff 2007 GM

This Miltonduff is the more adventurous pick and might not appeal to as wide an audience as the Strathisla for Van Wees, but that's probably why you should at least try it.
    • Nose
Bright orange zest which quickly evolves into notes of allspice and lemon yoghurt, as well as a subtle note of prunes and speculoos. There's a good amount of raisins here too. Finally some sweet peaches and blackberries.
    • Taste
A drying mouthfeel with some spicy pepper, but also aniseed, some very dark caramel and cloves. Then some dried figs and burnt toast, while ending on bitter chocolate.
    • Finish
Digestive biscuits, vanilla and baked bananas. Long.

A solid sherry whisky but also very modern. More nuts than fruit, more tobacco than chocolate. A bit one-dimensional. Dry aftertaste. Straightforward good but not really memorable.

Fruity, malty, scents come on immediately and increase in strength. Heather, light fruit.......

Fruity and that malt again. Delicious ........ alcohol gives a bite. Pepper....slightly burning.
    • Finish
      80 80
Increases a bit at first and then decreases quickly. Unfortunately, it doesn't really stick. Unfortunately.

Another anniversary bottling for the 100th van Wees party. First I’ve tasted was the Benromach (201828) and after that Strathisla (202268). I was happily surprised by both. Now let’s see what this Miltonduff has to offer me. Miltonduff is often an anonymous distillery if you ask me. It is what the cask wants it to be. Very rarely I meet a Miltonduff that stands out and is worth the money like the one by Whiskydudes for example.
    • Nose
It’s closed and it seems to me this is a rather short finish for adding color. It seems to me quite a lot of ex bourbon cask influences are there, as well as worn out oak. With 5ml on a 30ml dram this starts to come to life a bit more. It gives chalky flavors but it doesn’t impress me still.
    • Taste
Young and restless. Alcohol did not integrate at all so it seems to me. It’s a rough beast and not in a good way. Without water this doesn’t stand a chance. Mineral-like on the palate after adding water but loads and loads of dry oak still remain.
    • Finish
Same with the finish. the high alcoholic character that this offers neat, is not offering a memorable experience.

      It’s not complex nor ‘adventurous’.
This is completely not my style of whisky af all and in my opinion a classic example of a Miltonduff that became whatever the cask wanted it to be. There’s no character whatsoever. I tried with it whatever I was able to but nothing seems to work to work this up to something decent.

Nicely complex with a good balance between cask, spirit and fruity notes.
