As a big fan of the old Strathislas from the 1960s, I just had to try this youngster. The cask strength of 57.7% was also tempting here. Overall, the 2008 Strathisla is a successful bottling that doesn't need to hide at 13 years old. I like it very much.
    • Nose
Dark sherry, red berries, barley sugar, cinnamon and green apples with hints of caramel. Pickled raisins and a hint of coffee beans. The Strahtisla-typical distillery character is easy to recognize and the alcohol is well integrated. I like the nose very much.
    • Taste
The 57.7% pushes well on the tongue, the spicy notes initially set the tone: pepper, wood, leather dominate before the dark fruity berry notes come through. Very nicely done, with water it becomes a little sweeter.
    • Finish
The finish is characterized by notes of chocolate, cocoa and mocha, blackberries and raspberries, currants, and a slight sourness. Overall long finish.

It's good and there's depth and complexity, but it is also dark note upon dark note.
    • Nose
Lots of dark sherry notes accompanied by damp oak, bung cloth, whiffs of coffee beans and cherry syrup. Also raisins, a pinch of cinnamon and stewed apples with a caramel glaze.
    • Taste
Intense arrival with lots of dark notes again. Espresso, dark chocolate and plenty of cloves, as well some cigar tobacco. There's even a sliver of sulphur here, but it's almost not noticeable. Water smooths things over and brings out some rye bread, fennel and almond paste.
    • Finish
Lingering coffee notes, cocoa powder and a touch of aniseed. Long.

It's a good, medium sherried whisky and for the fans of Strathisla definitely something to look for. To me it's too much sweetness involved to be something that I would consider buying (especially given the price).
    • Nose
      86 86
A good combination of a fruity and herbal distillate with medium sherry influence. Green apple, grass, menthol, a bit of yeast, forest fruit, prune, milk chocolate, cinnamon rolls, cappucino and a hint of leather.
    • Taste
      84 84
Rather hot and quite "sweet" or alcoholic with a saliva-activating acidity. Peach confectionery, cherry syrup, mocha, cinnamon cake, caramel, snickers bar, orange juice. It's somehow balanced by a slight green (menthol) and leather notes.
    • Finish
      85 85
Quite long, intitially sweet but increasingly sour and a bit drying. It starts off which cherry syrup, prune, cinnamon, mocha, leather, but then gets more into tangy orange marmelade, ginger and a bit of liquorice root.

Another anniversary bottling for the 100th van Wees party. The first one I’ve tasted was the Benromach (201828). I was happily surprised. Now let’s see what this one has to offer me. I’m rather unfamiliar with Strathisla.
    • Nose
Completely different and not comparable to the Benromach at all! I really get a lot of Asian style flavors here! Salty, syrupy soy sauce and satay sauce and Indian curry flavors. Loads of fat sherried flavors. It reminds me of a Kavalan. Blindly tasted I would have sworn this is a solist sherry. With water a more usual sherried flavors comes out leaded by hints of cherry, raspberry and Arabic spices.
    • Taste
Oily and a wee sharp (alcoholic). It needs water for me to be able to make something out of it. Rather smooth and delicate with a wee drop of water. If gives me soft and ripe fruits, delicate spices and a wee hint of herbs.
    • Finish
Rather long but also a bit sharp and restless. Dark red fruits all over the place. Plumbs, bramble, sultana’s and red grapes. Again soy sauce and curry flavors at the end. After adding water I get flavors like nougat with nuts, cocoa, mocha and coffee. Water definitely adds dark ‘not fruity’ flavors and makes is way more pleasant on the finish.

It’s tasteful and undoubtably quality. But it’s also quite a challenge to find it’s sweet spot. It’s rather complex at just 13 years of age and started quite unusual at first with loads and loads of Asian flavors. Water appeared to be quite a game changer. Although some of the Asian flavors are still there, it also brought more classic sherry flavors to the table. The whole results in a challenging and vibrant dram which can get my ‘buy it’ advice without a doubt!
In my opinion it’s certainly not a beginners dram.

Straight forward on the sherry and the regional style.
