  1. Official tasting note

    by whic.de

The third card of the whisky arcana is finally revealed. Let us enter the circle of the initiated together. The Empress delights us with warming aromas full of cream and caramel, which come from the first filled sherry butt in which she was allowed to mature to become ruler. The third tarot card is known to have great power over people - so The Empress comes with a powerful taste.

As soon as the heavy decanter is uncorked, the Bunnahabhain 2009/2021 enriches us with sweet notes. The substantial quality of this unique single malt whisky is reflected in the solid, high-quality cork and the hand-illustrated label. Everything fits together: the copper accents as well as the font are matched to the natural, uncolored copper tone of the whisky. The sweet sherry butt gave away 709 limited unique pieces to the ruler. You get a natural single malt without cooling filtering from the popular distillery Bunnahabhain. Unlike most Islay stills, Bunnahabhain is not known for its strong smoky notes, but for its perfect harmony with sherry barrels. This exquisite first fill sherry butt is truly worthy of a ruler! Let Islay's sensual sherry flavors dominate you.

The Tarot Series - The Bunnahabhain 2009/2021 III. The Empress was specially selected by whic for the Tarot series and bottled by Signatory. Inspiration was provided by the 22 arcana of the Tarot. The whiskys come in heavy decanters and with large corks. All bottles have a unique, hand-illustrated label design, black tubes and a card tag carefully placed around the neck. These and other details perfectly set the mood for the mystical bottlings in it. With 22 single malts, the series creates a portal to a supernatural world of flavors. Discover for yourself which flavors the tarot cards have in store for you. Finally! A new tarot card is revealed. The ruler will convince you with sensual-sweet notes.
    • Nose
Sweet syrup notes unfold right at the beginning. In addition, there is a hint of ash, which is cleverly complemented by floral aromas. Then the sweet notes with cream and caramel come to the fore again.
    • Taste
The sweetness is also very present on the palate and is complemented by sour citrus notes and fine spice, which warms the mouth. Oak tannins show up in the form of leather and coffee. The Bunnahabhain The Empress convinces with a pleasantly oily mouthfeel.
    • Finish
      Very mild and nicely fruity.

The color is already appetizing -
    a nice reddish brown.

    No sherry bomb.
    Rather subtle.
    But also extremely powerful.
I'll let him breathe a little more...

    Grapes, fruits...
    Apricot, some honey, little barrel.
The wood aromas are covered by this fruity dominance.

    Oh!
    Very beautiful!
    Full-bodied and strong.
    Now come the barrel notes.
    Splendid.
    He's getting a little bitter.
    A fresh barrel.
    Now some vanilla too.

In the finish comes a little more spice,
    he gets a little bitter.
What a difference between nose and mouth.

    Interesting!

Interesting, balanced, fragrant and not at all typical Bunna.
    • Nose
      89 89
Just smelling already makes you salivate. Thick, oily, syrupy smell. Of course, the influence of Sherry cask is felt. Luxurious plum, cherry and vanilla pod perfume. Apricots, strawberries, caramel are next. There is also a floral aroma. I would describe the creaminess as whipped cream with cocoa
    • Taste
      86 86
Primarily dryness, pepper and acidity. But not as intense sour as most Sherry bombs. Barrel tannins, bitterness, oakiness are felt.
The aroma of leather and black Chemex coffee. It has oiliness, but not much. Next, apricots, vanilla, citrus acidity are revealed. Mashed potatoes at the end.
    • Finish
      84 84
Mild, sweet, salty caramel popcorn. Warming, bitter chocolate.

Starts with some vanilla, dark chocolate, cocoa, strawberries, some amaretto with cinnamon. Maritime notes show up after a while.
    • Taste
      88 88
Wonderfully rounded and yet powerful acceleration. Sparkling mouthfeel. Citrus notes and chocolate from the nose appear again.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium to long finish. Salty caramel popcorn. Overall a very nice Bunna!

Not your typical Bunna. I wouldn't even put him blind to Islay. Still a delicious malt.

Nice presentation, but that's all. Unfortunately I cannot agree with the previous reviews. For me, this whisky is perhaps a better standard. I was able to taste significantly better whiskys for significantly less. According to the High Priestess, that's a complete failure. Too bad, I usually like Bunna. But as written, just my opinion.
Tasted it again today, now I like it a bit more.
Sometimes you just have to go twice. Still, I expected a lot more.

    No sherry bomb.
You have to be a little careful with water, as it flattens out quickly. Solid Bunna!
    • Nose
      90 90
smells faintly of sherry. Really not a sherry bomb. A bit of chilli at the beginning, but it quickly fades away. Some menthol and furniture polish underneath. From the nose, I would have guessed this Bunna to be older.
Some time in the glass is highly recommended. The whisky opens up a bit and now seems more complex.
    • Taste
      88 88
spicy, strong, slightly sweet, full-bodied. You don't notice that much from the sherry cask, but rather only the oak seasoning.

Unfortunately, it flattens out with water.
    • Finish
      87 87
      long and nice and warm.

      More oak flavor with water.

      Chewy Candy, Sherry, Vanilla, Spices
      Beautifully harmonious and complex.
      Unexpectedly mature for 12 years
      Not a sherry bomb.
    • Finish
      90 90
A beautiful long finish with lots of spices and oak notes, as well as caramel.
      Some leather.

Since the Bunni is unfortunately no longer available in cask strength, I bought the Empress from whic.de.
After a first tasting I have to say it is worth every penny. A very fruity and, despite the high alcohol content, a mild Bunnahabhain. Great.
