Whisky Reviews for Benromach 2011

A textbook Benromach, if you ask me. Not a too active cask, so there is some room for the barley from the spirit, as well as the funkiness the distillery normally shows.

    Good stuff!

I love Benromach in general, and my heart says to score this slightly higher, but I have to deduct 1 or 2 points for the sulphuric elements.
    • Nose
Immediately recognisable as Benromach, it has that meaty, barbecued element with maybe some sweet paprika powder sprinkled in. Touches of chocolate, fresh olive oil, malted barley and peanut skins, with just a hint of struck matches, brambles and bacon.
    • Taste
A spicy arrival (cracked black peppercorns and cloves) with fantastic subtle notes of earthy peat, smoked paprika powder and tobacco, as well as whiffs of peach, dried red fruits, some struck matches and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Long with wood smoke, a touch of rubber and lingering spices.

Slightly dirty malt. Apple, caramel and vanilla. Whiffs of tobacco, grass, nutmeg, craquottes and smoke.
    • Taste
      86 86
More peaty, more hay-like malt. Burnt caramel, blueberry and a little lemon zest. Water turns the maltiness into cardboard.
    • Finish
      87 87
Peat, malt, orange, chocolate and nutmeg.

Benromach, loved for its old fashioned style of whisky. Now selected for a special bottling for the 100th anniversary of van Wees. Let’s see if they selected something decent :)
    • Nose
Oh that’s a good nose! Immediately that typical Benromach richness l with whiffs of smoke, bbq and quite some tobacco from te start! Alcohol integrated really well almost 60% abv is not prominent. There’s some ‘filthy’ edges inhere which, in my opinion, add to the experience! Smoky pear, raisins and fresh plumbs take care of the fruity part inhere. Fortunately the nose handles water quite well. It remains rich and full of flavor.
    • Taste
On the palate it’s a bit of a different story. It’s desperate need of water here. Before that I can’t make any more of it that smoked flavors, bacon, but also some sulphuric notes. With a splash of water, say 3 on 25ml, the palate gets accessible without the result of a collapsed body. This one definitely is a good swimmer.
    • Finish
Quite some oaky influences here, like in Toasted oak and burnt wood from a fireplace. Also some milk chocolate and again some tobacco. Somehow it gives me sensations of smoked paprika powder. With water more youthfulness is getting to me. If gives the finish a more malty and peppery finish.

A tasteful but also slightly youthful fellow! It’s a hell of a swimmer. Really remains alive and kicking after quite a splash!
Did they select a decent cask for this special occasion? Yep, they did! Is it worth buying? If you like classic smoky and meaty whiskies with tobacco flavors…yep! (and I definitely do!) If you like your whisky sweet and fruity…nope!
