Good, but the wine influence is a little bit off, like Laphroaig and a fruit syrup have been mixed together in my glass.
    • Nose
      86 86
Salty smoke, nutty, medicinal, sweet with blueberries and blackberries, a citrus like sourness, lapsang souchong tea and some dusty woodspices.
    • Taste
      84 84
Smoke of burnt twigs, an oily sweetness, sour and sweet fruits, fruit syrup, mostly cherries and blackberries, a little bit peppery.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long, somewhat ashy, but also sweet with liquorice, dark red fruit juice and a little vanilla.

    Heavy smoke meets red fruit
    • Nose
Smoke, some red fruits, little honey
    • Taste
      creamy, smoke, dry oak
    • Finish
      Smoke, medium length, dry

The first impression is influenced by the well-known Laphroaigaromen, gradually the volume and the smoky wood tones decrease, dominate it sweet fruit flavors. The overall impression is creamy and oily, easy drinking and extremely mild for a Laphroaig, he seems in the second half a little powerless and boring. I personally love the interplay of fruit or sweetness and the smoky peat and wood elements. I still like it!

    • Nose
Old pink with an orange shimmer shines the Laphroaig in the glass, on the glass wall oily "legs" pull their fast tracks back into the glass. Powerful, sweet peat and a hint of smoke rise from the premium snifter, maritime and phenolic iodine and algae to the fore. The typical Laphroaigaromen such as iodine, algae, peat and smoke are joined by creamy caramel and fruity strawberries, malty add a pinch of salt and apricots. Burnt wood tones and mineral peat are minimal, and again and again this beguiling fruity note comes to the fore. I love the interplay of slightly smoky peat and sweet creamy fruit elements.
    • Taste
The first sip is dominated by the smoky peat and burned wood. Iodine and salt are added, subtle sharpness fills the entire mouth while creamy sweetness stimulates the saliva. Fly ash and burning campfire, creamy malt sweet and fruity strawberries, morello cherries and apricots, honey, a pinch of fresh mint, just before the end, old walnuts are still showing. A hint of citrus fruits flashes ...
    • Finish
Creamy and mild rest the mild fruit flavors on the palate, from the initial smoky notes, almost nothing is available. Appearances of earthy peat, otherwise dominate only creamy fruit flavors with a hint of peat the finish. Citrus fruits and a light note of mint then let the aftertaste slowly fade away.

Briny peat, blueberry, mocha, caramel and curry.

Despite the wine aromas and sweetness of this bottling that are atypical for Laphroaig, it is undoubtedly a typical Laphroaig. As with the other malts from Laphroaig, the 48% alcohol by volume is very well integrated. In my opinion, the sweetness of the port wine complements the smoky-maritime aroma profile very well. This malt is highly recommended for lovers of phenolic-smoky Islay malts and a great addition to the Laphroaig range.

    • Nose
Typical, phenolic Laphroaig smoke rises in the nose. The smoke leaves a slightly cooling feeling and reminds me of tar and cold ash. At the same time, I also associate this smell with a slightly salty sea breeze. The 48% vol. is noticeable, but still well integrated. The port wine casks bring unusual sweet wine notes of dark fruits, berries and wine gums for Laphroaig. Despite the dominant smoke, these port wine notes are by no means in the background, but harmonize very well with the smoke. In the background there is a light malty cereal note, which I often find in Laphroaig malts. After the first try, when the nose has gotten used to the smoke, the barrel also comes through with slightly spicy, herbaceous notes and liquorice.
    • Taste
The start in the mouth is very intense. The smoke clearly dominates here at the beginning and pushes the sweetness a bit into the background. Over time, it becomes a little more present and the fruity-sweet port wine notes come through more strongly.
    • Finish
The mouthfeel gets a bit drier, the oak finally comes through and a slightly smoky flavor with liquorice and herbal candy lingers in the mouth and throat. The finish very long and pleasant.

Brodir is the Old Norse term for brother. The Viking language was spoken on the Orkney and Shetland Islands until the 18th century. Laphroaig's Travel Retail bottling was finished in port wine casks.

Good whisky. Price / performance ratio ok.
    • Nose
      85 85
Slightly sour, smoke, salty bacon, pepper and finally a slight sweetness.
    • Taste
      84 84
Optimal alcohol content! Port wine finish clearly noticeable. Sweet smoked bacon, aniseed, herbs, dark berries and a little pepper at the end.
    • Finish
      83 83
Long . Dry smoke with lemon and some pepper.

A small Laphroaig line up tonight! quarter cask, PX cask, Lore & Brodir. Al 48% ABV expressions. I’ll be tasting them all four h2h.
    • Nose
This is probably the most distinctive of the four whiskies I’ve put H2H to one another. Quite some Smokey red fruits like dates and figs and plumbs. The peaty flavors translate a bit more to ash and a bonfire that’s burnt out with the rubbery being still there but in the background. It is a bit closed though. So let’s give it some hand warmth. Yes that helps. This one explodes in tawny port kind of flavors. I love tawny ports and it seems that the flavors integrated really well here!
    • Taste
A lovely deep and red fruited palate upon arrival. Again it’s oily at first and gets more heavily bodied right after. Dried red fruits, raisins and some nuttiness. I like the dark character of this brodir quite a bit.
    • Finish
Long, sweet, sour and a bit salty. It coats the mouth with again a tawny port kind of experience combined with a typical Islay whisky profile. The whole has a lot of depth. Definitely the most sticky one of the 4 in this line up. It is very full of flavor and the finish offers quite a bit of fun with flavors going from mainly Smokey to mainly fruity to mainly spicy.

This is definitely the most coating, coastal and deeply flavored whisky of the 4.

      My top 4 of tonight:
      1) Lore
      2) Quarter Cask
      3) Brodir
      4) PX cask

An "easy drinking Laphi" - young and impetuous - but of good quality!
Joins a series of "good" Brodir bottlings!
    • Nose
      strong smoke / peat aromas, iodine, herbs, dark berries, sweetness;
    • Taste
      powerful and intense at the start; fruity (berries), sweet, phenolic smoke, ash, salt, tar, iodine, smoke - not too much depth;
    • Finish
      medium-long finish, sweet, salty, cold smoke; in the aftertaste an intense iodine note;

Cold smoke, maritime, medical, cinnamon, wood, earth, herb candy, dried herbs, a little lemon, nuts, there is also a very minimal fruitiness
    • Taste

Dark, rich and independent drink that stands on its own. Nothing like it! One of the better peat-drinks there is!
    • Nose
      85 85
Dark and oily with a deep peat nose like a burning fire, very very strong, lovely.
    • Taste
      85 85
Mature, almost too much. A monster, a beast of a whisky that grows on you. Peat! Complexity with a personalised narrative, hints of ocean, salt water, long grasses...
    • Finish
      88 88
The peat gently evolves, different tones of burned and unburned sugar, soft herbs, palet of different spices and a hint of caramel.

One of my favorite Laphroaigs. Very balanced and an excellent match between smoke and fruity sweetness. I like it really well.
    • Nose
Smoke; behind it, sweet; full and complex; maritime; Iodine; Malt; Honey + syrup; Herbs; Malt note becomes stronger after the first sip
    • Taste
Sweet; smoky; Berry; Honey; Wood fire, but still sweet and fruity; some salt and nice spices
    • Finish
dry smoke; Sweetness remains; Malt; becoming slightly bitter; honey again and sweet

    • Taste

Easy smoke, with notes of berries and a little vanilla.

Semi-long finish where the berries, fruit and vanilla comes through nicely. Slight hints of chocolate.

  24. Punktar scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

The is consistently good, but not as outstanding as the price and the expectation of the port wine barrel hoped.
    • Nose
Quite neat smoke, but unlike the 10 here rather direction wood smoke. With a little patience something about dark fruits in the background.
    • Taste
First maritime / salty notes. Then only the smoke. Licorice. Creamy on the tongue. Even more licorice. Very slightly metallic. Far in the background dark fruits and a little lemon flavor. I had expected something more from the port wine barrel.
    • Finish
      Very long and warm.
