01/15/2017: This rum is really super good. Um, ... this whiskey I mean.

Would have flirted with 92 without the bitterness on the finish and with a little more presence in the mouth.

04/21/2020: Second time I taste this Caledonian. It hasn't moved, it's still as good. We are really on Demerara, molasses. Lots of coconuts on the palate. Superb.
    • Nose
      92 92
At first glance, it looks like a Demerara.
We have this characteristic greedy nose and molasses.
Some red fruits: strawberries, raspberries. Dried fruits: nuts. Coconut.
      A layer of varnish. Leather.
      It's very well done.
    • Taste
      91 91
In the mouth it is a little watery.
      More classic sherry palate.
      Plum, coconut, chocolate, coffee.
Always a very pleasant leather side.
    • Finish
      91 91
Fresh and long finish on sherry, chocolate and red fruits.
We have a little coconut and mint that stays in the mouth. Slight woody bitterness.

Beautiful, sweet sherry rum with a grain base.
A very interesting and versatile whiskey.

      Astringent oak, grapefruit, everlasting, sherry

  4. Calmar scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

An interesting sherry whiskey, non-standard, slightly squeezed, but deep and rich in half-tones dry aroma unexpectedly gives way to a full-bodied and sweet taste, not so refined, but nevertheless very harmonious and balanced, the finish rather provides a smooth transition from taste to aroma.
    • Nose
Discreet, dry, old noble woods, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, cognac notes, burnt caramel, black raisins, rubbed wood, cilantro, sesame seeds, teriyaki sauce, prunes, earthy tones, pu-erh, old leather goods.
    • Taste
Dense, rich, sweet raisin-caramel notes, spicy wood - cedar, sandalwood; old cognac, puer.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, oak, cedar, leather goods, pu-erh, burnt caramel, eucalyptus.

A very interesting and memorable release. Overall round and balanced. The presence of medicinal herbal and bitter shades does not repel, but on the contrary complements the drink, making it more distinctive.
    • Nose
The most powerful! With the first nose you come across a layer of sherry-rum derivatives - rose hips, raisins, prunes, milk chocolate. A little deeper the nose into the glass and the aroma of spicy wood, saturated with sweetness and spices, begins to unfold. And above the surface of the drink, deep in the glass, you can hear the shades of earth, coconut and black tea leaves.
    • Taste
Strong tea with rose hips, prunes, herbs, oak bitterness, sweetness.
    • Finish
Long, dry, spicy. Dry dark berries, herbal tincture, oak bitterness.

Dark as oil, sweet as raisins.
    • Nose
      89 89
Spices, dried cloves and cinnamon, which were liberally sprinkled with plum jam. Raisins in powdered sugar. Sweet cinnamon roll. Painted leather, shoe shop, carpentry glue.
    • Taste
      91 91
The taste of a pie with plum or grape jam, with cinnamon. Glue and paint.
    • Finish
      88 88
The aftertaste is bright, and sweet and industrial. Average duration.

True story about the rum in nose and taste but it's a remarkable grain indeed. Vintaged at my dad's birth year, bottled at my birth year (not like I'm trying to find any parallels)
    • Nose
      89 89
Molasses, sugar cane, plum, red grapes, vanilla,
    • Taste
      87 87
      Sherry, vanilla, leather, tobacco, oak
    • Finish
      85 85
      Vanilla, bittersweet, oaky

Could be a Demerara rum but reminds me more on a Kentucky bourbon
    • Nose
      87 87
Charred oak, vanilla, toasted bread, brown sugar, sugar cane, spices, nutmeg, cinnamon
    • Taste
      86 86
Little punchy, oily, liquorice, subtle sweetness, more charred oak, spices, cloves, some dried fruits
    • Finish
      85 85
      Long, warm, bitter sweet

  9. Baanaanaabob scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

It tastes indeed like a demerara but a good one. Not overly complex and finish a bit short but nevertheless still the most enjoyable grain whisky I have tried so far

  10. Jeep51 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Quite unexpected. The sherry is very present and it seems to drink a rum. It is very sweet but well done and not disgusting
    • Nose
First nose on glue and varnish. Evolved on vanilla ice cream, cane sugar, raisins, tobacco and menthol. It's really rum.
    • Taste
Even more rum! Tobacco, coconut liqueur, spices, slight drought. The brown sugar is very present. There is a real presence in the mouth. It's very sweet but not sickening.
    • Finish
Long. Sweet, spicy and slightly dry.

Sherry, prune and especially coffee on the nose and on the palate.
    Very mellow.
Long enough finish on a coffee veil.
    A very beautiful grain

  12. Rom did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

Tasted blind. Nose strongly marked by the Sherry; coffee, praline, caramel, vanilla, coconut. Mainly on caramel and coffee, tingling and pleasant. Final of good length. A good grain.

  13. Ivynor scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Very classy product, which is drunk alone. the OBE may have improved the rendering.
    • Nose
Very sherry, lots of chocolate, spices, coffee. A little varnish, vanilla, coconut. Well melted and sweet
    • Taste
Slightly creamy, sweet, on the same notes as on the nose (maybe more mocha and dried fruits). So greedy.
    • Finish
Long, cocoa, with a little coffee, wood, varnish.

  14. tomy63 scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

amber color, well-defined nose sherry, coffee, dates, prunes, with in the background the vanilla / coconut side of the grain, not really OBE. The palate still has a good power, very marked by sherry, with a side Armagnac plums, prunes, figs, coffee, dark chocolate all that always mixed with notes of coconut. Very good length for 46%, on chocolate, spices, plum and coconut. Superb mix of sherry and grain.
