Scotch Universe is a series by Michel Reick that only names the distilleries in encrypted form. This is a Teaninich, one of the many Diageo Distilleries, of which there is no core range, but at most the Flora & Fauna bottling. There are always bottlings from the independent bottlers and the distillery is appreciated. This Teaninich has a post-ripening in 1st fill PX sherry hogshead, but is still not overly dark, but richly golden.

    • Taste
The taste is less fruity, the whisky is tart to dry with light wood aromas and dark chocolate. The PX cask didn't leave a sticky sweetness, but rather dry notes with herbs and wood. This isn't palatable at first sip - but builds into a tasty, somewhat challenging dram that's not overly dominated by the cask. The flavors are creamy, crumble cake with plums and curd cream.
    • Finish
Tart chocolate with a woody plum filling and some marzipan - sounds strange? Is good …

Michel Reick doesn't make mainstream whiskys and they don't always mature in good wood. This does not come from one of the typical PX barrels that are on the road today. But it's ok like that. This whisky has rough edges - that makes it interesting and distinguishes it from many others. A good whisky.

A beautiful whisky from the Highlands, according to the Teaninich nomenclature, which comes across far less PX-heavy than one would think with a 1st fill cask.

Fruity oranges and red berries, some oak in the background, herbs and spices and nutty notes, well balanced and not PX overloaded.
    • Taste
      87 87
Soft and gently sweet at the beginning, more and more spice comes through to leather, tobacco and some dark chocolate. A little water has a harmonizing effect.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is medium-long rather than long, with lots of spice and a slight sweetness. Towards the end it runs out with liquorice notes, somewhat minerally dry and slightly soapy.

    Aroma
Sweet, dough, pastries, meadow, slightly waxy, some alcohol sharpness

    the taste
Sweet, orange peel, tingly, spicy, a little chocolate, a little bitter, more pleasant with water for me, but unfortunately loses its edges too much

    finish
Medium length, decent oak flavor, sweetish, then clearly chocolate
