What a fantastic dram is this! Subtle and fragile. Bottled in 1977, so this whisky is distilled around 1960. One of the last labels with the historic location at 47 Netherkirkgate, Aberdeen. Cadenhead moved their office in 1977 to 18 Golden Square in Aberdeen, then finally to Campbeltown. Up till September 1977, labels on these dumpy's indicated alcohol % and volume in proof and FL.OZ.
    • Nose
Gentle waxiness intermingled with fruity notes of juicy pear, papaya and sweet melon. Paraffin and hints of cut grass. Also mineral associations of wet stones and chalk later on. Delicious old-skool nose common in Cadenhead dumpy bottlings.
    • Taste
Now more on yellow apples, lychees and citrus fruit (lemon and lime). Sweet barely. Subtle hints of clover-honey and vanilla. Fresh cedar wood and aniseed. Some pine and mint of the background. Superb silky mouth coating texture. There is a lot to discover in this multi-layered whisky.
    • Finish
Medium long and dry. White pepper and a little clove. Beautiful balanced and complex whisky.

[December, 2004]  Together with friends I emptied one of two bottles that I bought for 200 Euro each in September, 2004.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90.  My notes state a delicate and very quaffable dram...
