    A few days ago the great rocker Meat Loaf passed away. Whisky elves Michel Reick and Marco Bonn released a Staoisha in late 2021/early 2022 with a label that suits the sound of 'Bat out of Hell' so well. But not only the label suits - the whisky also suits the music: It is lush, wild, has rough edges. The music bites your ears - the whisky on your palate. Staoisha is the heavily peated Bunnahabhain, here 8 years old with a finish in refill port barriques, which gave the whisky a golden color.

    So then – these are tasting notes to a great album:
    • Nose
      The whisky needs a few minutes in the glass. It's like a rock album, which first has to prove that it can develop real power - but then come beguilingly powerful smells and sounds. The whisky is expectedly sweet with a hint of vanilla sauce and a rich, warm ash smoke. Behind this, however, there is also a flash of dirty-maritime rippling notes, which initially remain discreetly in the background. The port wine hits the nose as a fruity wine gum and then comes the funk with a kelp-filled rubber boot thrown into the hot fire on the distillery jetty. And Rock'n'Roll Dreams come through!
    • Taste
      Can you smoke custard with the smoke of the peat fire with the kelp wellies and pour a syrup of red Bassett's winegums and plum juice over it? You can, at least the whisky elves bottled the result of this combination here.

      The whisky has a decent basic sweetness, which certainly comes from the original maturation in the bourbon cask, which also provides the basis with decent vanilla. Then come the wine gum aromas of the Refill Port Barrique, which breaks the sweetness and contributes dry wood tones.

      By the way: With 60.5 vol. if the whisky needs a sip of water, you don't have to tell anyone...
    • Finish
      Smoked vanilla wood with dry wine gum juice - whatever that is, it sticks to my palate.

      Staoisha with an active finish - this is the class of young whisky that works. Discussions about the age of whiskys are obsolete: Age matters, no question. But young can also be good. But then a few components have to be added: smoke is important, a good finish is important. Both have been successful here. The Staoisha brings the smoke, the Refill Barrique the aromas that don't kill the whisky.

      This whisky doesn't just have the label 'Bat out of Hell'. Whisky and music are a perfect match in their power and the courage to use kitsch and sweetness, which are then countered by rock and smoke.

      Full, voluminous, vanilla, herbs, lovage. A slight acidity appears. The smoke hits your nose straight away, but isn't overpowering. Citrus is added and over time dark currant.

      Slightly oily, damn powerful start, but super integrated alcohol. Great fruit notes, pineapple, mango, salted caramel. I like it very much!

      medium-long. Smoke comes through, but the fruitiness is in the foreground. The smoke is campfire smoke. Slightly cold ash. Even in the finish, the alcohol is hardly noticeable, almost silky. A genius Staoisha.
