I'm positively surprised. My expectations of this NAS bottling with a charitable sidekick were conservatively subtle. I like what I had in the glass all the more. Decent smoke and sherry combination. Other than the 12 month finish in the Sherry Hogshead, I have no further information regarding the age of the malt. But this is secondary. The primary thing is that the whisky tastes good. If you want a delicious Islay with a sherry influence and want to do something good at the same time, you can get it here.

The color in the glass is amber, the malt lies with a very oily film on the edge of the glass, only a few legs move down. Immediately intense, greasy Islay smoke in the nose. A campfire on the sea beach that has almost completely burned down. Pieces of white charcoal on which the fat from the grilled steak is still sizzling, which is still smoking heavily and where the smell of salt and sea spray mixes with one another. A pot with a fruity-sour forest berry compote with rosemary and orange zest is now on the fire. Sweetened with forest honey and some ginger. A vanilla cream is also part of the dessert. With some time in the glass, aromas of coniferous wood join in, slightly resinous and the scent of freshly cut pine needles.
    • Taste
      88 88
The malt opens with a very creamy mouthfeel reminiscent of the vanilla sauce from the nose. Pleasantly sweet and fruity, the berry compote is here. But then it gets strong very quickly. The wood smoke combines very well with a smoky, spicy note that also carries some pepper. Rosemary and the orange peel are also noticeable in the taste. The alcohol is well integrated. No off-flavors noticeable. Strong but still round and harmonious.
    • Finish

Towards the end, some of the oak wood of the barrels comes to the fore, but without becoming bitter. The fruit aromas are rather short to medium long. The greasy Islay smoke lingers as long as the aromas of the resinous pine needles.

Not a badly made blended malt if I liked the finish. For me, however, a personally inharmonious aftertaste remains.
    • Nose
      85 85
Fatty, fleshy smoke with raspberry candies, intense sweetness with citrus notes, some maritime salted caramel is also included.
    • Taste
      85 85
Creamy-sweet, dark fruits, spicy oak and the very present smoke are still very harmoniously connected here.
    • Finish
      81 81
Long finish, the sweetness is still playing at first, then it tilts in a direction that is unfortunately inharmonious for me with burnt charcoal, liquorice, gum.

The fellow is a nose flatterer, I could smell it for hours. However, the taste then decreases. The smoke aromas are ashy and the fruit sweetness is much more reserved than on the nose.
    • Nose
Sweetish, strong smoke with aromas of smoked bacon and bacon chips. Intense and very pleasant. Dark fruits, including plums and raisins. A clear maritime note and salted caramel round off the aromas.
    • Taste
Soft entry with dry smoky notes of burnt wood. The maritime note is more reminiscent of slightly brackish salt water. Dryer aromas than the nose suggested. Wood comes through with some tannins. The fruits tend to stay in the background. The caramel reappears too.
    • Finish
Long, dry finish with ashy notes and caramel.

The Sea Shepherd Sherry Edition Batch 1 is also created in collaboration with the marine protection organization Sea Shepherd and the German importer Kirsch Whisky. The original distillery of the Islay single malt is not mentioned, but reflects the maritime, smoky and rough character of the island of Islay. Sea Shepherd is committed to protecting marine wildlife. The non-profit organization is dependent on donations. A portion of the sale of the Islay Single Malt Sea Shepherd Sherry Edition goes directly to the organization. The storage took place in sherry barrels and was bottled with 45.8% vol.
    • Nose
Sweet and smoky with notes of heather honey and campfire. Then slightly floral with fruity notes of raspberries and vanilla biscuit.
    • Taste
Silky and complex on the tongue. Sweet syrup, but then drier with a lot of smoke, citrus and oak. Some licorice.
    • Finish
Long lasting and smoky. Again lemon, salt and oak.

    • Nose
If smoke could be candied, it would smell the same. Intense Islay-typical smoke combined with a very nice caramel sweetness. Then also dark sherry fruits, raisins, apricot chutney and simmering berry compote. A strong breeze of salty sea spray with the scent of seaweed mixes in and brings a lot of flavor. In one corner there are oil-smeared, slightly musty rubber boots, and old planks soaked with salt water underline the maritime origin of this island whisky with their bitter wood aromas. It's really stormy in the glass here, an intense pleasure like a trip on a cutter in heavy seas.
    • Taste
Here, too, the same intense, sweet smoke with lots of salt and caramel and juicy dark fruits. The alcohol is very reserved, it brings a little warmth. Nice, sweet sherry notes, raisins, freshly peeled orange peel, strong vanilla and quickly also tart dry oak notes that are reminiscent of a strong espresso. Overall a little less stormy than the nose suggested, but everything very powerful and harmonious. I would have expected a little more oomph anyway. But that is whining on a very high level. For a NAS, this is surprisingly complex and full-bodied.
    • Finish
This whisky says goodbye rather quickly to medium length, a malty caramel sweetness, raisins and the still strong smoke draw pleasantly in the throat.
