Has nice barrel, fruit and spice notes, unfortunately the alcohol is too dominant and seems poorly integrated. It's a shame, it could have had potential for more.
    • Nose
      81 81
Moldy and musty wood, quite clear alcohol, hazelnut and almond aroma. Raisins and figs, fermented grapes. Due to the alcohol that shimmers through from time to time, it is sometimes difficult to keep your nose over the glass for a long time.
    • Taste
      83 83
With raisin sweetness and musty wood, it spreads directly on the tongue. Quite tart, the alcohol is also noticeable on the tongue at first. Nut brittle, almond slivers, amaretto cherry.
    • Finish
      82 82
Spicy and tart, at the same time with the fruity sweetness of raisins and figs. Quite "hot" in the finish.

Yes, it was a nice blind tasting again.
What immediately the alcohol and the wood spice in the whisky .
Alcohol, a lot of dark chocolate, wood and herbs and sour bread are noticeable on the tongue, but a young fruitiness is still scurrying about in the background. Amazing with such a load of oak at only 14 years.
Adding water , which I prefer in this case , becomes creamier , smoother and more complex .

A bit difficult, as it is clearly too hot from the alcohol. Decent whisky with water.
    • Nose
In the nose I find nutty sherry, slightly sour fruit, red berries. A little fleeting, certainly a good cask strength. Then something sweet in the background. With water, the nose becomes rounder and sweeter and the oak comes out more.
    • Taste
Pure very hot and sweet, poorly integrated alcohol. Water is necessary, but even then quite spicy. There are more tart wood aromas, lots of spice and a little toffee.
    • Finish
The finish pleases with spice, oak. A lot of oak, liquorice, sherry and a certain sweetness, towards the end rather tart oak and rather short.

Thilo Schnabel makes barrel divisions. And from time to time their own bottlings come onto the market under the Caskhound label. This is a 14-year-old Linkwood that, after initially aging in a refill bourbon cask, was finished for 18 months in an amontillado sherry barrel, giving it a strong golden hue.

    • Nose
On the nose comes vanilla with a fruity note. However, the fruit has already tilted a bit and is developing fermentation aromas. Only then do spicy tones appear with some cinnamon, plum jam and wood. With water, these aromas become stronger and the Linkwood is then more beautiful and harmonious on the nose. Wine gum rounds off the aromas.
    • Taste
In the taste, the alcohol is initially strong and sparkling, the aromas cannot unfold in the mouth. Even with water it remains bulky. There is a sherry aroma, there is a flash of musty wood and it is replaced by a hint of cough syrup, chocolate is there - all aromas flash and are gone a short time later.
    • Finish
The whisky remains alcoholic and sparkling even with water. But from my point of view, clear aromas that remain in the mouth are missing.

There aren't any direct bad notes on the surface, at least when you've tamed it a bit with water. But there are also no clear fruits, everything is hinted at and then doesn't come into play. In the end, the whisky doesn't convince me because the alcohol isn't well integrated and the aromas can't develop sufficiently.

    Notes from a blind tasting
    • Nose
Dried herbs, spruce needles, black tea, mineral notes, cloves and nutmeg, followed by ovaltine, fresh hops and nut oil. Peaches, tangerines and grapefruit round off the finish.
    • Taste
Strong start with sherry.... Fudge, cherries, the dried herbs return. Wood shavings, ginger and pepper, followed by coffee and roasted aromas. Earthy and mineral notes accompanied by a slight sweetness. Old leather, sandalwood, oranges and hints of dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Oranges, mangoes, white pepper, cloves and latte
