Five day production distillery, 750,000 litres a year. Cloudy mash 55ppm, fermented in wooden washbacks, slow distillation. Bourbon casks for 4-6years, Rioja cask (European oak) finish for 1 year.

Nose: redcurrant jelly, smoky strawberry coulis, strawberry conserve, thyme, chilean guava and strawberry mint, loquats and tamarillo, a humidor
Palate: black bread, mesquite croutons, strawberry lozenges and jamon iberico
Finish: heavy sweet smoke, narghile smoke and candy cigarettes, sweet paprika and chilli jam, red berry burps

    With water
Nose: hyssop, purple potatoes, dahlias, Persian limes and mastic, black sesame and fenugreek, blue pea flower
Palate: barbecue brisket and burnt ends, sweet barbecue sauce and fresh medjool dates, Henderson's relish
Finish: french vanilla and cardamom cream, iron filings and a tingling heat

Tasted as part of Southport Summer Festival Distell Finale tasting with master distiller Brendon McCarron

nose: peat at the beginning, a light balloon that quickly turns into sweet aromas, dried apricots, wine barrels, fruit bubble gum, poor quality milk candies
taste: ash at first fire, there is bitterness of grapefruit or bitter oranges, maybe gooseberries? then some sweets
finish: medium long, pleasant, more sweet than peaty, such a sweet candy surrounded by a smoke

Rarely tasted such a balanced whisky. Almost too harmonious for Ledaig lovers, because the scratchy character of some representatives of this brand is completely missing here. I'm happy because I don't warm to many other Ledaig bottlings. Recommended for a daily dram with a smooth smoke.
    • Nose
      87 87
Warm peat smoke and juicy fruit notes, cherries, red berries, velvety red wine.
    • Taste
      87 87
Velvety soft, creamy and harmoniously sweet, peat and wine notes combine to create a very drinkable whisky.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish shows a little more spice and a little bit of the scratchy smoky notes that are typical of Ledaig. At the end, a slightly dry freshness remains.

Immediately peat smoke and red fruit with red berries, citrus fruit, farm air and a little later I also get smoked ham.
    • Taste
      85 85
First a game of sweet and sour: peat smoke, red berries, (pink) grapefruit and raspberries. Also some salt.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long, drying finish due to the tannins.

I think it's a tasty whisky and would definitely like to taste it again, but I'm not sure I'd buy a bottle.
For more or less the same price you can buy the Ledaig 10, which I like better. But that's a personal preference, I can imagine that others score it higher.

Of course, a Ledaig has to represent the region of Iceland. The smoky whisky from the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull complements the maritime character of the windswept islands on the Scottish west coast. This unaged bottling from the Sinclair Series was finished in Rioja Cask, resulting in a beautiful reddish tinge to the (natural) color.
    • Nose
The wine character was also noticeable in the blind tasting. Behind the clear smoke come fruity notes reminiscent of strawberries. And then the maritime character in the smoke, which is moist and salty with algae, stands out.
    • Taste
The smoke is clear in the taste, the whisky is dry without fruity sweetness, but I like it better on the nose. There is the annoying sulfur note that is unfortunately often present in wine finishes, which increasingly takes the fun out of such whiskys for me. It disappears from time to time, but always reappears.
    • Finish
Also in the dry aftertaste of smoke and some wood, the sulfur comes as a disturbing soapy note.

In the blind tasting, the Ledaig reached 2nd place, with me at least 3rd place. There are many Ledaigs that offer more. The smoke is powerful and the strawberry aromas are nice on the nose - but it ends up being a little too dry and thin, the sulphur, which certainly also contributes to the dryness, is not as overpowering as with several other whiskys finished in wine casks. But it is not tasty and disturbs ...

This Ledaig is named after John Sinclair, the founder of the distillery on the island of Mull, which was then called Ledaig in 1798. The first bottling of the new Sinclair Series matured in barrels in which sweet and fruity Rioja red wine was previously stored.
    • Nose
Turkish sweets and rose petals balanced with candied fruits and grapes. This is followed by leather and a peppery spiciness as well as a hint of chocolate in the background.
    • Taste
Creamy with full-bodied notes of almonds, sweet malt and Ledaig-typical pepper. Raspberries, sweet vanilla and cocoa follow with cinnamon and freshly cut grass.
    • Finish
Long smoky with red fruits and sea water.
