  1. Official tasting note

For the strictly limited heavy metal edition “Tunes of War”, the single malt whisky matured in 225 liter ex red wine barrels. Heavily Peated Barley Malt with 54ppm comes from the Scottish Highlands and embodies heavy metal in its purest form.

The result, a uniquely creamy-sweet blend of red grapes, ripe apples and juicy peaches with warming peat smoke.

A very nicely balanced whisky for friends of the peaty taste.
    • Nose
      Subtle peat smoke, campfire, bacon.
    • Taste
Dry, spicy, light pepper note, currant.
    • Finish
      Long, dry, nice mouthfeel.

St. Kilian Grave Digger - Tunes of War, 3 years, 47% alc. Original bottling. Expansion: red wine barrels (225 liters). The barley malt was peated at 54ppm.

Nose: Clearly smoky, lots of peat. Smoker, fireplace, ashes, burnt bread. I also find fruit flavors, a light mixture of ripe apricots, honeydew melon and peach. With a little time in the glass, a smell of heating oil, workshop and grape must develops.

Palate: Light start, creamy and initially very mild. The smoke gradually spreads in the mouth. Cloudy apple juice meets rye bread, malt and ash, as well as green pepper.

Finish: Medium-long and warming, next to the smoke also a slightly fruity sweetness, but with a slightly chemical effect. Sweetener, bacon, BBQ sauce and pepper.

Conclusion: Rauch stands for St. Kilian, here we have a young and very enjoyable representative, who would have liked to have been a little more complex on the palate. 84/100 points (2021)

A warming and spicy single malt from St Kilian Distillers with distinct peat smoke and earthy ash notes, nicely balanced by the lovely fruit notes of the red wine casks used with plenty of sweetness. For an age of only 3.5 years, this is a remarkable single malt with a captivating variety of flavours. This dram does not come from Islay, it comes from Germany! Very impressive, in my opinion.

I thank St. Kilian Distillers for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Peat smoke is immediately present on the nose, accompanied by crisp bacon and sweet fruity notes of red grape, strawberry and raspberry. This is joined by dry aromas of ash, chimney air and burnt oak.
    • Taste
A sweet mix of red grapes, apples, ripe peaches with warming peat smoke spreads pleasantly in the mouth and is accompanied by spicy oak, a subtle peppery spiciness and dry ash notes.
    • Finish
The finish is long and wonderfully warming with notes of grape jelly and red apples. Becomes drier towards the end with spicy oak, wood smoke and dry ash notes that linger.

With water: After adding water, more oak spice and peppery spiciness on the nose. The peat smoke remains and the fruit notes are pushed somewhat into the background. On the palate still sweet and fruity with red grapes, plus warming peat smoke with a little less spice. The finish is still long with smoke, grape jelly and a little more spice, oak as well as dry ash.

Not really nice. Kind of like a bit of a musty note. Likes the other peated varieties of St. Kilian very much. Even the heavily peated. But this one doesn't appeal to me at all.
