Despite being a peat cask, the smoke is good but not overly noticeable. The barley used for Tomásín is not dried over peat smoke, but the whiskey has undergone a finish of 16 months in a cask that previously held peated whiskey. As usual with whiskeys from the Great Northern Distillery (this whiskey here was distilled in September 2016, matured for 3 years and 10 months in a 1st-fill bourbon cask and finished for 16 months in an ex-Bill Phil peat cask (#19099) ( you can see everything from the back label, very exemplary transparency of a bonder)), it makes a comparatively good impression even after a few years of maturing. I would describe the combination of single pot still and peated cask as very successful, I hope for more whiskeys of this kind - and maybe even for a "real" peated SPS.

Very fine smoke that hits the nose mixed with gooseberry puree, kiwi and apple. The smoke comes across as cool rather than warming, sometimes accompanied by an ash note. Spicy notes build up over time, complementing the fruity notes beautifully. Freshly baked bread, gingerbread spices, nougat, toffee and caramel, with a light note of conifer resin in the background.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very pleasant and not too intense attack with a much more intense note of spices than in the nose. Pepper, cloves, ginger, cardamom - the fruity notes have to work a little to get past them. But in the end they make it and kiwi, gooseberry, apricot and grated apple appear, along with coffee beans, dark chocolate, fudge and fresh bread dough. Oops, almost forgot the smoke. But yes, there is this certain dryness that you could easily mistake for dry wood. However, if I tasted it blindly, I would question myself and not necessarily bet on a smoky note (on the tongue).
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium long and now also with a clearer smoky note. The spices last a long time, the fruit notes have fallen by the wayside somewhere. But there's still some nougat and marzipan free of charge, you really can't complain about the age.
