The name says it all with this bottling. Intense sherry alternates with strong Islay peat smoke (south coast?). The 48% alcohol by volume also contributes positively to the intensity. This bottling is definitely recommended, especially for cold days in front of the fireplace.

    • Nose
Smoke and sherry dominate. The aroma is very intense, the 48% vol. alcohol goes great with it. The smoke reminds me of smoked bacon, campfires and cold ashes. Sweet impressions alternate with dry sherry notes. Citrus fruits like lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit stand out and are complemented by dried fruits like raisins and bananas. Then nutty aromas, malt and grain are added, as well as spicy oak notes and some leather. After the first taste, the spices intensify and a distinct smell of freshly cut oak complements the aroma.
    • Taste
The attack is just as intense and powerful with greasy peat smoke. This is quickly pushed aside by citrus fruits (oranges and lemons). The general mouthfeel is noticeably sweeter than the nose, with distinct honeyed notes. After a few seconds, the aromatic power of the barrels unfolds. I find almonds, white pepper, oak and a hint of nutmeg.
    • Finish
First smoke again with associations of cold campfire, ash and some bacon. The sweetness, which reminds me a little of Mozartkugeln here, fades fairly quickly and makes way for oak and spices. A slightly dry feeling and a slight but pleasant bitterness remain until the end.

Very good dram. Significant sherry cask influence brings complexity. Peat smokiness is still there, combine with sweetness, fruitiness /red berries/, dried fruit, nuttiness, european oak spiciness, wood tannins. Dry and ashy aftertaste. Brilliant piece of work.

Nice thickness of Sherry, syrupy red fruits, raspberry coulis, leather, caramel, nice balance with fatty charcoal and a violent, herbaceous, marine peat. Blackberries, blueberries, lignite. A few drops of tar, oil still hot. A zest of lemon to sweeten it all up. The palate is pleasant and fruity, strawberry, raspberry, very controlled spices, paprika, white pepper, nutmeg. Earthy hints. Long and sparkling finish, cola, slush, humus, burnt wood, blackcurrant.

Short note: Sweet, creamy smoke, dates with bacon, pepper and a slight spiciness in the finish. A smooth, sweet sherry smoker that I liked, but lost a bit on the finish due to the peppery notes in the throat.

Solid sherry smoker. In the nose you can find the typical sherry fruitiness behind the smoke. Also in the taste a harmonious interaction between smoke and sherry. And in contrast to the standard smokehead, there is no disturbing alcoholic note either. Solid malt.

Today in the glass a Smokehead from the independent bottler Ian Macleod. Unfortunately, the whisky was bottled colored and chill-filtered, but with a respectable 48% vol. Reminiscent of a Lagavulin 16 in color, this is certainly no coincidence. But why not go head-to-head with one of the best colored whiskies? In terms of design, both are not dissimilar...
... and in terms of taste, they don't differ that much. They both have their merits and I'm glad I had them side by side in my glass today. Anyone who likes smoky Lagavulin-style sherry whiskys will certainly not be disappointed. The higher alcohol content is given instead of an age statement.

Sherry, sweetness and a gentle smoky note, much less pronounced than with Lagavulin 16. The smoke here is malty, less phenolic and without iodine. Again, I find smoked bacon here, but softer and a bit fruitier overall. The sherry notes are not as opulent as with the Lagavulin, but everything is very harmonious and round. Even the alcohol works well and doesn't sting. I find the sandalwood note and the facet of oatmeal and grain very nice.
Very nicely made and with enough air, I find it absolutely equal to its competitor, if not a nose ahead. Respect!

Peat smoke, fruity sweetness, smooth sherry and some fresh mint. oranges, tangerines. The Smokehead looks younger compared to a Lagavulin 16, but this is not necessarily a disadvantage. The fruity side is emphasized a little more and despite the 48% vol. everything remains very harmonious. Here, too, dark chocolate, walnuts, toffee and a pleasant note of vanilla. What it lacks in complexity it makes up for in smooth mouthfeel, even at a handsome alcohol content. I am impressed.

Medium length finish, initially with fresh mint. Gradually, sweet peat smoke and orange flavors come back. With increasing salivation, nut aromas and dark chocolate can be tasted and the smoke recedes into the background. A nice development.

Aroma: Strong smoky and peat notes combine with dark fruits and a little caramel, as well as grilled bacon. In addition, spicy oak and earthy tones.

Taste: Rich and rich on the tongue. Lots of smoke and peat followed by dark dried fruit, smoked banana and roasted salty nuts.

Finish: Long and powerful. Licorice, marine salty notes and smoke.

Delicious whisky from nosing to finish a pleasure.
