The Lagavulin 13 Years Ex-Mezcal Casks is brash and bold, and yet surprisingly comforting and balanced as well.
    • Nose
Plenty of damp oak and sweet wood smoke, accompanied by grilled pineapple, charred beef and a whiff of smoked paprika powder. A touch of cough syrup in the background, as well as ashes and some subtle farmy notes and vanilla pods. Extremely impressive, but it is the balance that stands out most.
    • Taste
Sweet arrival with a warm smokiness that swaddles notes of charcoal, roasted peanut skins and tar, with some ashes as well. There's this sour tinge accompanied by a decent salinity and charred lemon peel to round things out, with finally a whisper of blossom honey after adding some water.
    • Finish
Medium to long with lingering wood smoke and a light medicinal touch.

To get a better idea of it in direct comparison with the 12-year-old 2021 Special Release.

    Nose:
Significantly less oily-maritime than the 12yo Special Release, no olives, mandemus, algae.
Overall also more restrained in terms of aroma intensity. The cask-strong 12-year-old is significantly fatter and more powerful in the glass.
The smoke has a certain herbal-floral note. So I imagine smelling smoldering thyme and coriander bushes, with some flowers.

    Mouth:
    Cold ash, pumpkin seeds, salmon.
In addition, agave syrup, fennel and a bitterness that I can not quite assign.
For me, this year's jazz bottling comes up with aromas that don't give a coherent overall picture for my taste.

    Finish:
Medium long, clear herbal aromas and bitter notes that I don't associate with the oak

    86/100

    Conclusion:
I can't deny that this whisky is surprising and has some flavors that I haven't had many times before.
Unfortunately, I don't like these, or not in connection with the Lagavulin character.
Compared directly with the 2021 12yo CS, the latter is much better, looks rounder and at the same time fatter and full-bodied in intensity.

Smoke, orange, pineapple, passion fruit, lemon, the perfect combination of smoke and sour fruit, it smells so good, Chinese herbal medicine, a hint of bacon and the salty taste brought by the sea breeze. Finally, it's like opening a box of mint lemon candy, and the saliva is secreted unconsciously.
    • Taste
      89 89
Bacon, salty caramel, cut tobacco, lime, pepper, a touch of spicy, bring out the flavor of some tropical fruits. The smell is the temporary advantage of fruit flavor, then the taste is the temporary advantage of charcoal smoke.
    • Finish
      90 90
After a long time, the slight bitterness left by a trace of Chinese herbal medicine disappears in an instant, and the taste of smoking remains in the mouth. At the same time, it seems to contain a mint lemon candy.

You can add a few musical metaphors to it and it's certainly a nice experiment. Ultimately, however, it does bring me to belt out exuberant odes to the joy of whisky. ;-)

Meaty, sweet and medicinal. Smoke, ash and iodine, seaweed, salt, honey, a bit herbal. Alcohol somewhat felt in the nose. Some fresh and sharp mezcal notes are present, but not much. Dry and peppery

Ashy, salty, hot and burning. Dense. Honey, wax and herbs
    • Finish

Long, earthy, woody with medicinal notes. More honey sweetness

Laga like new wine, not laga.
    • Nose
Dusty island wine, grass ash, pepper, toasted wood, fish oil with a hint of fishy, some green stems and fermented sensations evoke Mezcal's imagination. Vanilla, with a lot of sugar, a little irritating, and strong impact, more like a low-year Laphroaig than a lagavulin, with some small yellow granulated sugar berries in the back.
    • Taste
Chili, iodine, brown sugar, salt-roasted ginkgo fruit, fireworks, bitter Chinese medicine, fish oil, very light fruit flavor, fermented.
Strong, good fat, slightly sweet, no sourness, no astringency, obvious bitterness, slightly spicy, slightly alcoholic.
    • Finish
Long, bitter coffee, campfire, salt water.

    Color: Gold

Surprisingly light, lacking power. Not as good as expected.
    • Nose
      86 86
Peaty and maritim at first nosing. Smooth and well balanced with notes of peat, wood smoke, olives, oak and grilled steak. Decent orange aroma in the background. Clean, fresh and surprisingly light for a Lagavulin.
    • Taste
      87 87
The mouthfeel is slightly sweet, peaty and spicy. Same aromas, when swallowed. Medicinal and maritim, grapefruit, oak, salt and ginger, zesty and slightly herbal.
Again surprisingly light and elegant for a Lagavulin, lacking power.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium long, dry, salty, oaky and peaty with ashes. Long and slightly bitter, zesty with mint and peat. Remains pleasant.

Lagavulin 13yo, 2021 Jazz Festival bottling, finished in mezcal casks, 54.8%.

    At Melody, Mar 2022.

    Dark golden orange.

Aroma is muted, vaguely lactic, faintly pencil shaving woody. Not great on the nose to be honest. It may be vaguely, subtly 'green' but there’s very little there by way of classic Lagavulin notes or mezcal cask impressions - it's just quite dampened.

Taste is very soft at the abv. Softly smouldering. Dry peppery smoke. Some dark chocolate behind that. I’m not getting any mezcal character but I don’t mind so much – I always want a properly emptied cask. The smoke is quite nice. Over time there’s a building green agave note in the middle before the punchy smoky finish.

It’s a perfectly good whisky. It delivers the punchy Lagavulin breathy bonfire smoke, subtly infused with a faint greenness that adds a little something different without being crass or cack-handed. It could have been quite a good one but it’s a shame it offers little on the nose. 3.55/85

scbp-6576, the unexpected delight that Roger Verin brought to drinkers in a special era.
    • Nose
      91 91
A chaotic smell, a high degree of maturity, a little on everything, heavy smoke, a dirty peat wine, full of all kinds of flavor elements that are not welcome by small fresh, the outline of smoke is soot and ashes, The characteristic wormwood and Chinese pharmacy herbal bitterness and a lot of dust, sea salt, seaweed, motor oil, dried fish and dried shrimp, the meat texture is quite strong. Pineapple, lime, caramel, a hint of obscure mezcal mineral and agave juice. 91
    • Taste
      92 92
Oily, peat is very strong, starting with burnt biscuits, sweet citrus syrup, caramel, dry seafood-style fat, bringing out refreshing fruity flavors such as pineapple juice, green apple, light salt, and lavender. During the period, pepper, chili, and peppermint oil are relatively basic, which is the basis for this degree of performance, and it is not offensive. The wine has a high concentration of flavor, strong wine, full fat, balanced flavor, acceptable complexity and high overall maturity. p92b92
    • Finish
      91 91
The knot is sweet, with heavier ash, slightly astringent, slightly sour, not bitter, and long. 91

A great and very unusual experiment, this bottling. People who used to find even the Lagavulin Distillers Edition too extravagant when it was introduced would turn their heads here.
I like it, although I was - admittedly - very surprised at first. I hardly thought I'd have such a crazy Lagavulin in my glass.
Drinking strength is great and no dilution is necessary.
    • Nose
      89 89
A very amazing and delicate Lagavulin nose. Extremely sweet, slightly floral, together with very delicate, maritime smoke.
Moist, light bundt cake with icing, vanilla, floral scent, light smoke with a pinch of sea salt, thyme, rosemary, pineapple flambé. Later comes the scent of freshly cut twigs.
    • Taste
      89 89
Peppery and sweet onset with a very nice oily body. Great integrated alcohol.
Pineapple, vanilla, crème brûlée, apricot ice cream, salty caramel, charcoal, fine oak spice.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium finish. Pineapple, espresso, fine ash, raw chocolate.

It has an oily viscosity and its bouquet is relatively intense. I have aromas of campfire smoke, ash, citrus, pears, caramel and honey sweetness. Relatively complex. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. The alcohol is well integrated and it has a heavy body.
