This for Sweden exclusive bottling was announced at Systembolaget as an addition to their stable assortment. It’s not a given then, how it can also be “Small Batch”, as acclaimed on both box and bottle. As for the other information on the product itself it speaks nothing of its notes in regard to nose, taste, nor color - which I actually see as a promising sign; this is not a whisky which feels it first needs to tell me it’s good. Instead we are informed that the working title, The Crazy Swede, is a “full bodied, complex, and smoky” whisky. The bottle claims “Arran Heavily Peated Sherry Casks is produced and bottled exclusively for Sweden”, with the box adding “As part of our commitment to offering hand-crafted, Small Batch Single Malt, this is a limited edition release of some of our rarest casks, married together to create a unique bottling.” Should this remain as an often to be found whisky in Systembolagets stores, we should be lucky - assuming the quality can be maintained. In any case, I’m to pick up a few for safekeeping - the price of 549 kr (53 €) makes this a great buy.

Nose: This is not a poorly made cherry bomb aged in low class casks, trying to hind behind a veil of smoke. The nose is quite subtle, given what we soon taste. There is certainly plenty of sweet cherry, without the artificial and quite chemical variety which one does fear from non age stated whisky. The smokiness mixes very well, neither stealing the show nor leading us away from its fruitiness. Press brewed coffee, lazingly spiced with bourbon vanilla powder and muscovado sugar already in the press, having been left as dishes even though the coffee is long gone.

Taste: A fresh, young taste. The sherry sweetness strikes and is soon followed by the accompanying smokeness the nose promises. My thoughts go towards summer and a hastily abandoned barbeque having been paused by rainstorms and thunder, and the smell of the forgotten wooden shoes close to the still warm coals. There’s also a vanilla bourbon quality to it being accompanied by lapsang tea and apricots. The addition of water removes the initial young punch and prolongs the finish, which then unfortunately also reveals some feinty notes of burnt plastic - leave it as it is.

Finish: It’s young, and the finish is short - and as noted above it’s worsened by the addition of water, to a surprising degree as it both prolongs the finish and makes it infinitely worse, bringing with it vague notes of old ashtrays. You’ll want your finish to be short and sweet.

    86/100. Don't add water.
