Again a great mixture of its own, not just standard-above-average-Sherrycask, no no, here is something special at work, great exoticism mixed with sherry and exciting transition in the mouth of astringent to sweet syrup.
    • Nose
Beautiful aromatic from the beginning in the glass, dark blossom honey, freshly cut roses, tangerine, candied pear, red apple, candied ginger, perfectly balanced with cinnamon, raisins, figs, plum, mango, some passion fruit, passion fruit and beautiful milk chocolate
    • Taste
Raisins and figs, dry milk chocolate, cherry, ginger, cinnamon, a little mango chips, passion fruit, honeydew melon, rose water and acacia honey, nice dry-sweet mixture, the sweetness comes out especially from the middle, plum, thyme and brown sugar
    • Finish
Very long, passion fruit, apricot jellies, pear, hints of eucalyptus, ginger, cinnamon, sweet malt

I found this one very difficult to rate, mainly because this is a profile I haven't encountered much before. The important thing is, I like it a lot and would love to have a bottle of this on my shelves.
    • Nose
Lots of milk chocolate, but also menthol and plenty of Earl Gray tea. There's probably a hint of smoke in there too, but it remains a rather closed. Let's see if water helps. Brings out a fruitier side with kiwi, and lime. Finally just a teensy bit of smoke.
    • Taste
Rather dry at first, but strangely somewhat syrupy too. Cherry, cocoa powder, and dark roast coffee. A rather meaty side as well. Water helps with the dryness and brings out thyme, but also some citrus fruits.
    • Finish
Drying, with sherry notes and menthol. The finale is almost ashy.

Revisiting after ECW tasting 17/7. Now tasting with a 70s Long John De Luxe 8 which has a good chance of containing glenugie (and kinclaith). The commonalities are there, maybe, slightly. I was a bit concerned about the oloroso finish here, and I'm not sure exactly if it has helped but at least it doesn't play a heavy hand. My sense is this cask was starting to "fade" a bit, and anyway think it has been bottled too late because European oak is felt quite heavily on the palate. Scotch mist appears before I've consciously added water (maybe a little water residue in the glass but not so much as a drop), almost opaque with two drops of water added. 8/10 (ignoring today's price, which is not worth it, I would rather have a different cask or two slightly younger Lochsides, say).
    • Nose
Pretty shy at first, and it will remain quite reserved. Silky, hints of tinned tangerine and cream, and braeburn. Suggestions of milk chocolate. Two small drops of water accentuates a mild passionfruit side, a little furniture wax, barley sugar sweetness, and a tiny drop of fish oil. It's an understated nose, elegant but all quite low key.
    • Taste
Soft but lovely fruits and woody elements, gentle stewed jammy plums, mild passion fruit in an antique bureau, dash of sugar syrup (but nothing cloying here), and a nice wee lick of petrol in the end. The European oak tannins become stronger in the finish, which is medium, with a little coffee bean and chocolate.

Super exciting bottling of a distillery that only produced sporadically and was closed forever in 1983. She was like dozens of other distilleries in 1983 that could no longer withstand the economic pressures.

To be able to try one or the other dram of it so nicely.

A nose that you have to let work first.
The smell of rose petals in a damp basement. Wood aromas of tropical woods. Fruity pipe tobacco and mango in an ingenious harmony. In the end, it becomes sweet, light chocolate and caramel.
I miss the typical walnut of an Oloroso barrel a bit.

Fills the entire mouth, incredibly creamy. Now the Oloroso Sherry is there too. Mango, a few red fruits, a hint of beeswax.
There is also a spice / herbal note. Lovage, dried mint, nutmeg.
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium length, here a few percent are missing to wear it longer. Espesso and chocolate.

Glenugie, 32y, 1977-2010, SV, Oloroso Sherry Finish, Cask 5, 46%
    Color: orange brown
Nose: exotic, tropical fruits, roses, wood polish
    Body: medium
Mouth: neat bums for 46%, dark chocolate, coffee beans, ginger, menthol
Aftertaste: long / medium, mild, somewhat flat, here the volume is missing, later wood, caramel and ginger
Conclusion: beautiful dram, very peculiar and not mainstream at all, fresh, despite the age

    Such an interesting sherry maturation!
    • Nose
      94 94
Teak and cedarwood and a bit of freshly polished furniture. Hints of rose water, dried leaves and flowers, tobacco. Everything feels a bit musty in a positive way. With time there is dried mango and more and more milk chocolate, what a nose!
    • Taste
      91 91
mouth-coating, sirupy. Lots of sweetness, classic sherry notes, mango, cherry, a certain waxyness
    • Finish
      90 90
medium long, a touch of spicy wood, mint and milk chocolate again.
