A really great ex-bourbon malt again. Ripe, but still fresh and a very full aroma. Lots of fun.
    • Nose
Full ripe nose, yellow fruits, quince, sweet and doughy, with time more citrus, lemon cake and really fresh and sweet.
    • Taste
strong, full and fruity, a lot of spice, sweet aroma but also a bit of a tart citrus touch.
    • Finish
Slightly tart, grapefruit, spice and wood. Ripe, but still fresh.

This is my first Daftmill as other bottlings were very hard to get and were (still are) very pricey. Let's see if the hype is justified. The nose offers a classic, bright ex-bourbon profile and is very good for its age. In the mouth it's the profile of the nose but somewhat uneasy, it could improve with a better integration of the alcohol. Now it's a little too sharp. That translates to the finish as it's slightly bitter. I spot signs of quality although they still have a long road ahead of them. For the price, there's lots of other better options. Thanks for the sample Tijmen :)

This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger.
Thanks to Peatbogger and Lincolnimp I get to taste Daftmill but like many others I couldn't afford to buy a full bottle especially at todays prices.
    A really nice dram though.

When you open the cupboard doors under the sink where you keep the cleaning products.
Marigold rubber gloves, all seems a bit odd but I rather like it.
This is what hit me first and then the vanilla, citrus zest, sponge banana, sherbet dip, fresh wood shavings and lemon tea.
A few drops of water and the sink cupboard disappears and it becomes more fruity and floral.
    • Taste
      90 90
There is obviously a kick at this strength and it brings out the citrus zest even more.
Like every cask strength it gets more palatable with every sip.
The spice and fruit notes are quite well balanced.
With water the spice is tamed a little.
    • Finish
      89 89
A long finish and praise be, it's like sucking on a lemon Locket throat lozenge.
      This could cure anything.
With water there is some bitterness on the death, not bad just different.

Too bad for the alcohol, pleasant to drink.
    • Nose
Vanilla and lemony nose, very ripe grapefruit peel, white pepper. Not very complex.
    • Taste
Powerful mouth on stale gingerbread with lots of pepper. Rusks toasted with butter. Spicy vanilla. Banana and clementines. A bit too much alcohol as the sips.
    • Finish
Finish on a good warm brioche with a salted butter caramel topping. A little cocoa.

A decent Daftmill but overall a tad disappointing for what it has to offer. Nevertheless, it does have a strong signature of a lowland whisky after the example of Rosebank and (to a lesser extent) St. Magdalene. It bears many similarities to the countless Signatory Rosebank bottlings from a few decades ago. In that sense it's nice that the style has been resurrected. Couple of emo points for that, because otherwise the bottling is very superficial.

    Quick hit review.

A shout-out to peatbogger for opening his Daftmill, mine is still stuck in Germany (supply chain disruptions)! This is a fairly singular nose, featuring exotic tea, lime juice and strong notes of vanilla. Waves of spice hit the palate, very punchy, grassy and vanillin-driven. It takes water very well. Citrus zest, ginger and nutmeg migrate into the semidry finish. A great malt, no doubt, but given the insane prices, this is both my first and my last bottle of Daftmill.

We all save special bottles for special occasions... until we have more bottles than there ever will be occasions.
So I popped my #19 on New Years Eve.

A huge thanks to WB for making it available at an acceptable drinking price.
It's good whisky, but there's no way I would even have considered buying a Daftmill at the secondary market price level.
    • Nose
      86 86
Lots of yellow fruit with a crisp vanilla seed note.
      Lemon zest, orange, clementine, melon.
Sweet, with a light but very clean peppery hint to being a cask strength.
I never expect miracles from the nose of a Lowland, so this is as good as it gets.
I didn't find water to make much change to the nose.
    • Taste
      91 91
Neat... an oily punch of pepper to the mouth.
      Sounds bad, but it's not.
Lots of fruit is quick to quench the "pain" and make it a pleasant encounter.
It matches the nose closely, just incredibly intensified.
Water? Well, I found it hard to drown it. So much so I had to measure it with a refractometer when the spice finally gave in... and it showed 32%
I don't advice to take it that far, but it definitely gets more pleasant with a "good dash", making the fruits more expressive.
    • Finish
      88 88
Quite long, and neat it is as expected spicy and dry.
Water doesn't make much difference to the length, but it gets less spicy, less dry, sweeter and hence a lot more enjoyable in my opinion.

On the nose vanilla pudding, lemon zest, sawdust. Very nice. The palate is not too complex, vanilla, hay and the finish is rather peppery.
Although we are not huge Daftmill fans, we got an opportunity for a bottle split and we are glad we did it.
This isn't the most complex dram you ever tasted but it's very nice, the nose is the best part. If you are Daftmill fan, you're gonna like this bottle. In our opinion the price is too high for this whisky, but what's realistic whisky price these days?

    • Nose
Very alluring muggy fruitiness. Luscious white and yellow fruits. Quince. Fortunately no green notes...thats a huge plus. Not that other Daftmills are having that, so keeping it classy.
    • Taste
Intense, no bitter edge, citric acid, smouldering. Very fruity. Interestingly enough, it has not have that specific, most typical characteristic this time but still I can recognize it as a Daftmill through the very singular fruitiness.
    • Finish
Long..ish, or medium to long with beautiful lingering fruits

The dram immediately brings back memories of quince stored away from the summer. Or warm rhubarb cake with lots of vanilla. Or ...
Does not need dilution - very nice :)

Fruity and sweet, and starting quite smooth but gaining power in time. Vanilla, orange, peach. My first Daftmill tasted so far, a very pleasant first meeting.
    • Nose
      88 88
Fruity and sweet. Citrus, vanilla, cake. Full scent, warm feeling. Then some powder sugar sweetness, sweet waffles.
    • Taste
      87 87
Pretty smooth initially, then some more sparkle. Sweet fruitiness, orange, citrus, some vanilla. Getting more powerful in time.
    • Finish
      88 88
More smooth now, sweet fruits, orange, some peach. Later on, it gains power as well. Pretty long finish. Some wood now.

Very powerful and fruity, like fresh fruit salad on top of a vanilla cake and little sweet cream, more spicy and zesty in the finish - very drinkable and good overall!

Quince jelly, lemon peel, hints of vanilla, honeydew, apricot jam, white pepper, dry hay, whiffs of pipe tobacco, more yellow fruits, cookie dough, little orange zest - very good!

      93 93
Very punchy, oily, fruity, little sirupy, good sweetness, more yellow fruits, peach, apricot, pineapple, little banana, vanilla, blond oranges, little citric, more cookie dough, dry hay, fruit cake, pepper, ginger - great!
    • Finish
      92 92
Long, warm, zesty, fruity, spicy, vanilla, hints of herbs, more ginger, quince, cookies and cake, little grapefruit, not drying - still very good!
