Loch Lomond distillery. One I have on my radar since April 2019, when me and my mates visited this old paint factory. Let's see what this peated LL will bring.
    • Nose
Well this one does not take prisoners. This dram is definitely peated. I would not have guessed this to be LL. Could have easily been from Islay. Earthy, raw and dirty indeed. Both sweet and salty.
    • Taste
Full blown attack of your taste buds. Tickling of spices on the tongue. I dare not add water; I believe it does not need it. Waxy and oily structure. Vanilla as well as cinnamon. Tropical fruit on the BBQ.
    • Finish
Very very long finish. Syrupy remains till the very end. Sweetness, peat-smoke and spiciness are well balanced.

The nose is clearly the best, and beautifully Christmassy.

Smells a bit like old Lagavulin DE: richly smoky dark berries. But then there are also fairly farm notes (stable smell, damp clay, old milking pail) like Ledaig from the red wine barrel or Kilkerran, plus star anise and other Christmas spices.
    • Taste

Very oily, charred board pink pepper salmon, fresh off the fire, drizzled with lots of lemon.
    • Finish
      85 85
It quickly turns into grapefruit-like, the sherry fruits say goodbye and the funky notes take over the direction again.

this whisky stinks! Big time! And i love it one time and then i really dislike it the next.. so much glazed ham and dirty socks and old varnished leather.. it’s like biting on a well worn, old shoe.. it is indeed creamy and lays oily on the tongue.. sweetness prevails.. but this heavy peat takes no prisoners.. the finish is saved however by floral, heathery notes a la HP

With this 6th batch called Batch Christmas, vital spark returns to the distillery it started this range with: Loch Lomond. And since I absolutely adore this whisky, this was a no brainer!
    • Nose
That’s an interesting nose! It’s ‘dirty’ and salty at first. It reminds me a bit of shells found on the beach. Salty but chalky at the same time. Also seaweed. It quickly begins to release more intense and rich flavors. Someone write cherry jam, that for me is spot on! Nice and smoky! Very coastal. That typical lomond metal flavor is clearly present! Smoky mint flavor and slowly but certainly dark roasted coffee beans start to come out. Stewed pear and red fruit jelly. This fellow is probably one of the, if not the most, heavily peated Lomond I’ve had. And I absolutely dig it!
    • Taste
Round and smooth upon arrival. The balance is just great here! Red fruit candy, winegums, thick and creamy body. Hot chocolate milk with whipped cream. Clove, definitely clove and cinnamon as well. A whiff of raspberry. It treats the palate like a gentleman. Absolutely fantastic taste wise!!
    • Finish
Great continuation of the palate! Long, ultra soft, smooth and creamy. Thick and mouth covering feeling. Spices like clove, cinnamon and vanilla sticks. Fruits like cherries and raspberry. Forest fruit syrup. And it goes on and on. Really sticky to the palate!

Without a doubt this batch is the best batch so far of this Vital Spark range! Where batch 4 was a bit of a disappointment, this one restored my faith. Full on sherry but still oh so typical Loch Lomond! It’s not going to be a surprise if I tell you that I would recommend buying it. It’s on the higher side of the prices but it absolutely delivers as well. I’ve reserved myself a second bottle already :D

Vital Spark is a range of strong, smoky whiskys from Donald and Andrew Hart's company Meadowside Blending, named after a (fictional) west coast barge. A distillery is not specified for the sherry-finished, neatly smoky 12-year-old Christmas Batch 2021. The base names Loch Lomond as a distillery. The whisky is beautifully copper-colored and promises Christmas sherry flavors.

Christmas is over - but the whisky could go well with the remains of the stollen in the 'Between the Years Week'.

    • Nose
Sherry, fruit, smoke - the whisky is not hidden in the nosing, it grows with its pounds. It's smoked cherry jam with a hint of menthol and a sip of cough syrup. The smoke is strong from a well-burning fire on which a moist strand of kelp is thrown in between, while cherries with vanilla pudding are boiled in a pot over the fire. The herbal broth is also cooking next door. The nose is much tastier than any Loch Lomond I've had before.
    • Taste
The smoke penetrates forward with a certain funk, fruits and sweetness flash, but are wiped away by the alcoholic note of menthol. With a little water, the sweetness comes into its own and is countered by dry aromas and herbs. The whisky is fruity on the nose than in the taste, here the aromas are quite tart towards licorice and the smoke is strong. The sherry does not look superimposed and integrates well with the strong smoke, which also reveals maritime notes in the taste.
    • Finish
In the end, the whisky could stay a little stronger, it fades a little too quickly and then only the dry smoke remains. A touch of more fruit would be great - but it's nice that way too.

A nice smoky whisky that could certainly also come from the Isle of Islay - but probably more from the Highlands. The last kick that makes it really big is missing - it is definitely good. And at the end of a Christmas Eve with all the gluttony, the dry smoke component with the maritime funk isn't bad at all.
