The first "new" from the Bushmills Standard Range.
I'm curious, especially because I remember the old 16 as an extremely great standard whiskey.

Conclusion: Compared to the old 16 it has lost some momentum (possibly the sherry/port casks are no longer as intense). But overall still a great dram.

It will certainly gain some momentum when it can breathe a little more.

      First impression:
This is a sniffer - vlt. not extremely complex, but,
very nice sour aromas, fruit and sweetness alternate - citrus, orange, vanilla (yes, I think there was marzipan).
I can't find anything about the port (classic dark heavy berries) (now the bottle is freshly opened, maybe more will come at a later date). The sherry influence is there, but not dominant.
As far as I remember, the old 16 also had nutty, malty flavors.
      I find oak too.
    • Taste

Oh yes, it's sweet: marzipan, vanilla, here are the nuts, now come the candied fruits (southern, hmm. also some bananas).
It becomes creamy/oily in the mouth.
And very interesting: After the first small sip (the rest remains in the mouth) comes the chocolate, mocha, plum, raisins. And now a great nutty note.
    • Finish
      88 88
The tannins are noticeable or is it the sherry. The mouth becomes dry and the chocolate spreads. And that lasts.

I have only had a few Irish whiskies and so far this is a runaway winner. Smooth oily mouth feel which I love. Loads of tropical fruit and an earthy nutty taste. Long finish with a little cocoa at the end. Lovely. Great value too!

This exceptional single malt has matured in three different casks, giving it its unparalleled flavour. The malt has matured for about 16 years in bourbon casks and oloroso sherry casks from Spain. While maturing in the bourbon and sherry casks, the aromas of toasted wood, vanilla and sweet notes develop in the whiskey. The whiskey is then transferred to large barrels in which port has matured. This final maturation of a few months gives the beautiful finishing touch of the sweet character of the port to the whiskey in combination with the already present ripe elements and sweet aromas of years of maturation.
    The color is amber
    • Nose
The fragrance has notes of honey, nuts, vanilla of the wood, port
    • Taste
The taste is very complex, due to the aging in the three barrels, honey, maltiness of nuts, a little citrus, toasted wood and port.
    • Finish
A nice sweet aftertaste of aromas of wine and red fruit.

Opinions can be divided about the new bottle design (I like the old design better), about the content - likewise. Because taste is always a matter of taste.
I'm pleased that after a few years of scarcity, which has meanwhile led to prices of over 100 per bottle, the 16yo is apparently once again an integral part of the Bushmills range.
If only it could keep up with the truly grandiose nose in the finish, in which the basic maturation in Oloroso sherry casks and ex-bourbon casks, as well as the finish in port pipes, comes into its own. I could well imagine this being the case if it were bottled at 46% instead of 40%.
    • Nose
      89 89
Intense red fruity nose with blueberries, blackberries and black cherries. Just as intensely spicy with allspice, chervil, rosemary, thyme and tarragon. The fruit notes are not constant, but changeable, because after a while peach and apricot, even a little mango and passion fruit appear. They don't displace the berries, but just cover them so gently that they are still able to shine through. Milk coffee, milk chocolate, marzipan.
    • Taste
      87 87
The start comes across so powerful and full-bodied at only 40% that even a tongue accustomed to whiskey with a higher alcohol content does not think it has to believe that it is tasting flavored water.
Fruity and spicy right from the start, but right from the start there are only tropical fruits such as mango, passion fruit and peach on the tongue. The fruit note sometimes tends towards the sweetness of gummy bears and a Tropi Frutti mixture, but always swings back to real fruit. Chervil, tarragon, savory. Caramel and vanilla, white chocolate, slowly emerging dryness. The full-bodiedness slowly fades away, the fruit notes recede, the spices fade.
    • Finish
      85 85
Here comes his little Achilles' heel - but only a little one. The finish is just medium long, dry wood, vanilla, caramel and some milk chocolate are the rest that managed to escape from the tongue into the finish.

without comparing it side by side with the bottling in the older design I can find any difference.
Seams to me really just the packaging has changed and the Whiskey is still the same which is very good by the way.

It's nose it still the best part and very complex and rich in fruits while it weakens over the palate to the finish.
Nice one to sip. Still like it.

A mild, drinkable Bushmills with a fruity nose. The port influence only becomes clear in the finish, where it develops a flowery, rosé note as it fades away or passes by. There is no repurchase reflex when the bottle is emptied - 04/30/2022
    • Nose
      87 87
The nose surprises with a fruit basket, banana, persimmon, pear, tangerine, fruit jam, spicy nuttiness like a freshly cut avocado, warm marble cake
    • Taste
      86 86
Initially cooling, tart, sparkling in the sense of sparkling and not in the direction of spice or sharpness, it is very mild, almond, canned apricots, rosé wine
    • Finish

Almond, ginger, black pepper fading into oak, floral finish

    Freshly opened bottle. Easy drinking.
    Nothing burns or bites.
    Pleasant wood-driven bitter notes.
    Nice sweet and fruity.
Delicate peppery glow in the finish
and fading delicate bitter wood aromas.

  22. 11insomnium scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

Pretty mild and light. Looks almost a little thin and youthful. Unfortunately, it falls completely short compared to the old tried batch from 2013. Much similarity to Knappogue Castle 14.
    • Nose
Light fruit notes with banana and some citrus, mild sweetness, quite simple and reserved, with more time in the glass then a bit more fruitiness
    • Taste
Slightly sweet and tart with hints of fruit, some mineral notes, slight tingling, although it is otherwise rather mild
    • Finish
Finely tart with delicate fruit, relatively short and expressionless

  23. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Can't find a huge difference to the older bottlings.

Still a grand, complex nose, while the regrettably thin palate is still saved by a good deal of oak spice and lush fruits.

Perhaps this latest version has a bit less sherry influence, but I'm not sure.

A good option to drink. A little extra bone bitterness for me and seems less saturated or a little liquid compared to 16yo in the previous design. Perceptible vanilla notes indicate the dominance of bourbon barrels in the batch. 21.5-21.5-21.5-21.5
