it tolerates water and needs time
I like the nose and the malt is OK for me, but older ones were better
    • Nose
red berries, oak lovely, sherry class, raisins, slightly polished, floral-perfume note, slightly sour
with water: sweeter, mushy berries, slightly vanilla increases, slightly hairy note

from the 1920s: wood!!, tingles slightly, roasting grate (already cold), slightly metallic, a chemical note
with water: dark sweet, a heavy floral note
    • Taste
      full, round, oily
tart berry, oak (different, treated), tart sherry, spicy, bitter, the alcohol tingles slightly

with water: soft, sweet berries, licorice, green needles from the tree
    • Finish
      long
      Sherry, tart, chocolate ~75%

with water: dark fruity, very tart!!

      astringent throughout the mouth

Always reliable sherry bomb, but maybe not as exciting or overwhelming as previous batches. Continues to give the spicy Aberlour character, but just comes a off a little younger and sharper this time around. Unlike many batches that I preferred undiluted, this one really needs the water to help even out some of the edges and open up on the flavours.

Maybe not the best A'bundha of all time, but nobody really needs that anyway. Batch 71 delivers. Cask strength, sherry and intense aromas. There's all I would expect.

Haven't had a A'bunadh in a long time so thanks to Ronny and Peatbogger for the sample.
If my memory serves me well the stuff back then was much better.
    • Nose
      81 81
The usual sherry notes and this doesn't smell like a high percentage.
A little hint of bourbon, ginger cake, toffee and tinned prune juice.
With a few drops of water it now feels like high strength which is weird.
    • Taste
      82 82
Am I getting soft in my old age but you can feel the 60%,still quite palatable and I have had worse at this percentage and lower.
I agree with peatbogger, not so much of a bomb as they used to be.
With water it's a little more sweeter with mint and liquorice.
    • Finish
      83 83
Nice and long chewy spice leaving the reminiscent of a cherry boiled sweet.
Not much difference, it's just the mint leaf right on the death.

A sample from ronnholt. Like batch #72 this is not quite the bomb that A'bunadh used to be. In some way that's not all that bad, some of the 50-60 batches was a bit too fresh and heavy.
    • Nose
      85 85
More cinnamon and chocolate and less sherry than the recent previous batches.
More resinous wood notes and a hint of mint.
ABV absolutely not noticeable on the nose.
Water doesn't change or add much. Maybe the wood, it seems less dry and rather a little sour.
    • Taste
      88 88
      Sweet and punchy.
More like what I expected from an A'bunadh on the palate.
Yet it's more cordial berries than sherry fruits.
Spicy on cinnamon. Turning towards chocolate.
Water naturally takes the punch down a few notches, but it takes water very well without losing too much spice.
    • Finish
      87 87
Neat it is quite long, but it's also quite drying on spice.
As the dryness fades there's still some sweetness left.
Water brings more dark chocolate forward and replaces the dryness with a much nicer sweetness.

    • Finish
      Medium length, spicy, oak bitterness

    Dampfhammersherrybombenwhisky.
    • Nose
Sherry aromas are already evaporating heavily from the glass. Chocolate can also be sniffed. Maybe some leather.
    • Taste
The cask strength is noticeable. Especially in the volume, he can hardly walk with his strength ;). Really good power. Flavors of sherry, chocolate, cherries, plums [dark berries]. In the beginning, the rather bitter wood notes are quite strong, but then they decrease and the overall impression becomes a bit milder. Mild might be the wrong word. Something sweeter.
    • Finish
Notes of sherry and dark chocolate dominate the long finish.

  13. Sporx scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    taste
Vanilla, rum notes, sweet, alcohol sharpness
