In the Private Cask Collection, Glen Moray has bottled a 12-year-old whisky finished in Madeira casks. The bottling is cask strength and has a strong brownish golden tone. Glen Moray is always a little under the radar, this whisky was released in 2021 and copies of the 234 bottles are still available in a number of shops. For a price of over 100 - 120 €, the whisky should also offer something decent.
    • Nose
The aroma is beautiful. Here come old, dry sweet wine notes, this is the sunny south with herb-bush slopes fragrant in the sun. Dried apricots, evaporated plums and herbs, lovage and nutmeg. The aroma has power, the alcohol carries it well to the nose without stinging or burning the nose.
    • Taste
In the mouth, the whisky becomes very strong and the cask strength has to be diluted a little. The whisky flows sweetly and oily on the tongue, the sweetness is there as a distinct sensation but is overwhelmed by the whisky's power. It's not just the alcohol, there are also strong tannins that may also come from the wine. The wine aspect is dry and settles astringently in the cheek pockets and on the palate. Nevertheless, the sweetness remains as a feeling and is a bit too sticky and syrupy. Unfortunately, no fruitiness can unfold, and I also miss chocolate or similar notes. Rather, it is the aroma of a strong, sweet wine that has oxidized in the open bottle for too long.
    • Finish
This is an ambivalent experience, sweet wood southern wine syrup dries out the mouth.

With this whisky, the aroma in the nosing is more beautiful than the experience in the mouth at the end. It's very bold, the Madeira flavors are there - but they come out over-oxidized and stale on the tongue. The various aspects cannot come together to form a coherent overall experience. Sweetness is there, spice is there, wood and tannins are there. What's missing is a more obvious fruit note, with a certain acidity and freshness that might have integrated the flavors better. This works a little better with a PX Sherry Finish from the Private Cask Collection that is two years older.

Very tasty Glen Moray from the single cask. A completely different class than the Glen Moray standards, but also at a different price.

Beautiful round, fruity-full, complex nose, both the ex-boubon barrels and the Madeira finish are easy to identify.
    • Taste

The taste is intensely fruity, but also brings marzipan, vanilla and nice, spicy malt and wood notes. Very creamy with a hint of peppery spiciness. You should be careful with water, but you don't have to.

I would classify the finish as only medium-long and it then ends a bit flat.

Dude, what a cool color that is! The people of Glen Moray melted copper pipe and mixed it with the contents of the barrel - and conjured up the aromas of Munster Altbier punch. On the palate, the fruits become darker, the freshness transitions into the fermented. And suddenly orange zest comes around the corner, surfing on a heavy wave of oak spices. Long finish. Slow. fading away. A vital and at the same time complex dram.

Nice wine moray. Typical malt notes paired with peach and raspberry, light effervescent powder, tingling, warming spice and subtle oak. The finish is dry and slightly sweet.
Really successful bottling, even if a bit expensive.

It does its job well and brings a few other notes with the Madeira barrel. Tastes good. But certainly not a bargain for its age, so it doesn't have to be a bottle right away.
    • Nose
Malt. After the first sip comes something like fresh bread. More tart stone fruit. Not quite ripe apricots and vineyard peaches. But after a while they get sweeter. Some of the fruit was also tossed in butter and sprinkled with a little vanilla sugar. Apricot dumplings. Some fudge. Orange peel and bergamot. Removes a few Mediterranean herbs. Tree sap. Fresh wood.
    • Taste
The fruits on the nose come back and are relatively sweet. But now they were sprinkled with lemon juice. Glucose. A good pinch of salt. Pleasant tingling to the point of sharpness. Ginger. White pepper. Then it gets drier and the wood sets in.
    • Finish
Dryer white wine. Trail mix. Rather light, but dry wood tones.
